Hey guys, I work for Tona. Just thought I'd drop in here after I caught sight of this thread.

So, yes, a very big part of the company philosophy is not to push crap down your throats year after year, calling each one the next best thing. We've been fairly open, the new Pop is setup pretty much the same. We made minor changes to the inserts to increase the durability even more, but as far as bottom shape, channels, everything. It's the same.

We're not telling you it's 10 times better than the old gen pop, we're simply refreshing the graphics. If you love the new graphics, awesome, go out and snag one. If you like the old one better, keep on riding that thing, because it's probably not going to break anytime soon. It might not be bomb proof, but it survived being left in the same room as a teething puppy, so it's pretty damn close. We're not trying to hide the fact that this is pretty much a graphical refresh, obviously as a company we'd love it if you went out and bought the new one, but I don't think it was hypocritical of us to release a new board when we're pretty darn upfront about our changes.

So, the Flow is actually a tiny bit lighter. Not terribly much, but it is lighter for those that care about it. It has a bit more aggressive rocker than the Pop, but the main feature is the hourglass concave on the bottom. We got a video coming out soon that will do a better job of explaining this than me. The Flow is a tiny bit slower than The Pop, but if you like hitting wave kickers or slashing edge to edge it's a fun board.

Let me know if you guys have any questions I can answer.

Here's an unreleased action shot just for everyone who made it though my massive block of text.

Is their any plans yet for a new pop with a different shape?
Or will it always be the original shape?
I'd be interested in getting it if it was lighter.....

Hey Calvin, sorry for the delay. I guess I didn't check the right setting to get emailed with a new reply.

We are looking at a Pop 2.0 of sorts. However, for the past year we've been focusing mainly on The Flow and once we push this series out we'll take a look at how we're going to distribute our r&d resources.

Have you taken a Pop for a spin yet? You'd be surprised at how little the weight is actually going to matter in your tricks. If you look at the percentage of swing weight we actually increase, when you add the weights of a wet pair of boots + board, it's really not that significant. Given we're not pimping it as a PKRA board or anything like that, but we feel like the durability increase of the sintered base is a good tradeoff to make. The only way to get lighter would be to thin out the base which would compromise durability and flex.

I believe Kemp is right, the Dub has much more rocker.

Now the Flow has a bit more rocker than the Pop, but still not as much as a Dub. It's definitely not as fast as a Pop and is more of a cruisey feel to it, but it's definitely not draggy at all.

I've also heard people say the Dub runs better finless? Not sure how true that is, but I do know our boards are a bit more lively and playful if you take off the fins. Some guys that I've sold boards to actually came back and told me they just run the heelside fins only.

Sick, I'll stay with my current board till this Pop 2 comes out.
Just remember to keep the price the same
And no, I haven't ridden a pop before, just a bit nervous of the lack of low end on a heavy wakestyle board
Thanks for the reply

I usually run 30mm fins on my comp board and 15mm on my rockered wakestyle board. Having ridden the Tona a bunch I'd say unless you're hitting features it rides 10x better with fins. It slips out too much on when popping otherwise especially on back rotations (mobes KGBs etc). You also don't notice the weight on the Tona though at all and the bottom shape actually makes for some great low end.

Interesting you say this because i was watching a vid of me doing some b2b's and it looks like i am sort of slipping backwards as I pop off the water. Could well be my technique though...

Throw some fins on and you'll notice a big difference. Without fins you get into kind of a weird position as well. You'll notice yourself going more vertical than horizontal with them. If I take my fins off completely I end up with a back to blind air pass most of the time, if I put them on it's a full KGB to heel pretty much every time. If you can help it, having 15mm - 35mm fins is optimal. Only reason not to have them on at all is if you are both doing flat water tricks and hitting rails in the same session.

did it take you long to get from back to blind to KGB? Kgb is my goal for this year, I got blind judge pretty much every time, and also back to blind, but cant get blind judge 3 yet. Im not even gonna think about kgb untill i get bj3, any advice?

Is a Blind judge 3 that much harder than a normal blind judge?
I thought it would be easier landing heelside with a bj3.

For some perhaps landing heel side might be easy than toeside, though if you watch a few videos you will find that most tricks done with speed and control, the rider will land pretty much flat (i.e. no edge..) so landing either heel side or toeside won't make to much difference imo. Though a bj3 is harder than a blind judge, because of the extra 180 rotation.

Drury probably has some better tips, though i recently got this trick so thought i would share my experience..
If you have blind judge most times, the extra rotation won't be to much harder to dial. My first one was just going for a blind judge of a small kickers (wave), all you need is more height and start rotating earlier, if you watch a few of the pros in videos you will notice most of them finish there railey and start rotating before the reach the peak of their pop. Basically you will want to try get as much height as you can while keeping the kite relatively low and really focus on pulling the bar towards your hip aggressively to compliment the rotation.

Yes I found them a lot harder, only just got them this summer, and I still need the conditions absolutely perfect to make it. The problem is as you stretch for the pass it kills the rotation, you also need to grab the bar rite in the centre or the kite will fly up, powering up and again stopping the rotation.
Pop really hard, twisting your legs and the board in the opposite direction first, to then throw it around hard, trying to getting the pass in before the apex.

Calvin, if you are worried about the weight of the Pop, this is one manoeuvre where the weight and momentum actually help.
Calvin, dont hold yourself back waiting for a Pop 2.0, just get on and bite the bullet, you wont regret it.

BTW in sure Rowdy will correct me if im wrong, but a blind judge 3 is a BS made up name, because a BJ is already to blind , then a BJ3 would be all the way round back to blind again. I know its a but nerdy worrying about names, but I believe the correct name is a Back 313,

some would say a kgb is easier, i wont because i can't really do either.
But the key with it that i found while trying BJ3's is that you want to spin for the 3 straight away, not do a bj and try force the extra 180. so spin the pass with more momentum and when you catch the bar push it ACROSS your body to what would be your leading shoulder when landing heelside.

The easy answer for the blind judge 3 (bs 313) is to go bigger, pull your legs up way more (bend them), and pass sooner - go for it at the apex of your pop, not on the way down. The first times you do it you'll probably force your legs around the last 180, but once you get the hang of it you're almost in that position already when you pass the bar.

With a KGB the answer is basically to go more upside down and again - go bigger and pass earlier.

ETA for the boat to arrive in Sydney port is 4/7 and it usually takes 3-4 days for them to unload the containers and for our freight forwarder to deliver the boards to our door.

4th being a Friday, we will be expecting delivery the following week as long as everyone does their job and there are no strikes! :)
