I recently brought a new switchblade 3 quiver,8, 10 and 12 and have had a bit of I guess its what I'd call inverting/folding in on itself going on-
Whilst riding on waves, I've been stalling the kite to surf a wave and the kites are packing up on me-Ive never riden these hybrid/bows or what ever they are, I've always riden C kites-
What am I doing wrong?
You might oversheeting, bows are more prone to oversheeting than C's so you may have to depower a little if you are riding unhooked. The SB3 shouldn't invert anymore than any of the other new kites.
You will know about it if it really inverts - it completley turns inside out and you have to turn your bar around to control it - only my crossbow 1 has done that.
I think I know what you mean about folding up though, my Contra 14 and occasionally my 12 xbow2 does that if I ride too far towards it(on a wave) in light cross/cross onshore wind, never in propper cross off . It normally happens when the kites starts falling backwards out of the sky - it picks up a bit of backwards momentum and then one or both wingtips start folding towards the middle. If you catch this early enough you can steer it out of trouble by turning the backward fall into a nose dive and then tuning it back up.
My guess is that you are getting too far underneath the kite or you are chasing the kite down to fast thus loosing tension in the lines only to have the kite tumble backwards. Try to keep the kite moving and avoid oversheeting the bar should be good enough to avoid any type of inversions. If however you do chase down the kite and the kite is very low and deep in the window and starts to fall backwards this might be that you are oversheeting and just need push the bar away.
I've also had this happen on switchblade 1 & 2 12m. It will normally only occur if you are riding towards the kite on a wave and then pull in hard on the bar and turn the kite at the same time. This will sometimes completely stall it and it will try and fold itself up. The solution is to keep the bar out when you turn or if your unhooked, dont load up the kite ( ie. lean back ), too much when turning.
It can also help to pump it up harder. Good Luck.
Definately pump it up nice and tight, a nice pinging sound when you flick the leading edge, not a dull thud.
Good luck ![]()
all good, just pumped it up nice and tight and was less aggresive with the bar and all good,
just had my 8m screaming around with 3 foot waves-deserted beach, lifes good! beer o'clock-
thanks for the advice everyone-
