What is the safety release system on the Venom? I have a 2003 Guerilla, it has the pin-pull release which doesnt work too well under pressure. Have there been any modifications to this which I can adapt to my Guerilla? Cant afford a new kite boohoo.

Hey Killa. It's a great idea to update your safety system to something you trust.
Old safety systems were pretty primitive, but the kites were often not much different from new ones.
I suggest you either buy a new quick release chicken loop for your kite
or
buy a slingshot surefire spreader bar, which is a quick release and spinning leash on your harness, the advantage is you can use the same QR and leash with all your kites.

I agree with Tobes partly...

I fly a 16MTR PLK Venom, I swear by it, (i began 2Yrs ago with a LEI Slingshot Kite) flew the venom all last season, will never go back to a LEI, worthwhile to go out in anything above 10 knots, and i have held it down successfully twice in winds hitting 30KNTS, a bit scary but that's the adrenaline rush of it all.
When i bought this kite, coming from a secure safety system that slingshot boasts (and mind you is actually i reckon the best on the market when it comes to safety bars for LEI beginners and transition riders) it was a bit uneasy.
I had a Surefire spreader bar with the spinning leash, and although the PLK Bars have no ring to attatch the leash to i was able to make it work, yet it became increasingly difficult to handle the kite in backrolls etc. with the front lines getting twisted and the leash being stratched all the time, and then the leash snapped off, so i went out and bought a slinghot 06 fuel chicken loop because it provided a secure safetey release.
recently my gear was stolen from a RAAF Base carpark (rip curl kite series impact vest, PLK bar and lines and harness with the slinghot spreader bar). so i bought a new fuel chicken loop, and bought the new suicide set up "pro surefire spreader bar from slingshot.)

it's amazing no leash to attatch to the kite, you just attatch it to the chicken loop, gives you the smooth 3 points of safety. and if you release it from the chicken loop it just auto zeniths above you. i can't wait to see if PLK comes up with something like this.

so i agree with tobes, except go with the pro surefire spreader, and the quick release chicken loop.

the spreader is about 200 with the ckicken loop about 60. i am sure that your life versus safety out on the water. you can afford to spend that.

Just to add, i know heaps of venom riders that love the PLK saftey system, it works for them, but like everyone, sometime you just gotta tweak your gear to suit yourself. all i did was add the chicken loop and the spreader bar.

Thanks heaps for the advice. Ive had a bit of a break (pun intended) with injury, so want to make sure all safety systems are in place and working well before I get out there again. Cheers

Hey Killa,I've also owned a '03 Guerilla which had no quick release at all.I put an airush that was ok,not brilliant,on it.However the new venom QR is great, much easier to release than my old airush one.By the same token the slingshot one sounds excellent too. While your at it you may want to suss out the condition of your lines. My Guerilla lines snapped once they had a couple of seasons under their belt, also the chicken loop line as they too can break after alot of wear & tear.Good time to do it while you're on the mend.

Hey Killa,
I caught up with Peter Lynn Jr and Lachlan Beed yesterday, and spoke with him about the safety issues. Hopefully in the next year we will see new groundbreaking safety systems that will become iconic trademarks of the already brilliant PLK Venoms

I recently got an ankle reconstruction, so have been off the water, and amid the gusting S/W yesterday went out on a new 13mtr Venom 2.

I have to say Pete has outdone himself on this one, it handled gusts brilliantly, the turning was great, and threw a couple of backrolls, all in all not a bad session before i had to get back to family.

if you get the oppurtunity to try a Venom or Venom2 out i suggest you do it, you will notice the difference between the guerilla so much, Pete Lynn has gone all out to ensure a more stable kite that has the ability to auto zenith when you let go of the bar, for example a mate of mine was getting a lesson from lachie yesterday and a medium gust hit him and he started getting dragged accross the sand running uncontrolably downwind, (we were all there once) and the kite was almost gonna hit the sand, and lach yelled out to let go of the bar, the kite immediatley smoothly sailed to the zenith, i never had a LEI that could do that!

hey and don't worry about people who give you crap or tell you it is only made for the snow, and give you doona jokes, it is i agree statistaclly proven that more than 90% of kiters use a LEI, and hey that's cool, i mean the guys i kite with call me captain snooze, and give me crap all the time about it. However, with a Venom it is easier to learn tricks on and you get higher air, and so i just plug away and do my own thing, and progress with my riding ability, although i still consider myself in the whole spectrum of ability a begginer.

so get out there dude, try a venom, there are bargains to be had on ebay and safe kiting..

Safe Kiting.

Believe it or not, I've never had any bad comments about my Guerila, only lots a queries from people who've never tried them. I learned to kite on an Arc and have always found PLKs to be easy, forgiving, and good for a range of winds & conditions. Ive never had any trouble relaunching - Ive only ever dropped in in water three times as they turn so quickly - when you're crashing you can just give the bar a quick yank and know its on its way back up while your on your way head first under water! And they do make great doonas, Ive been out camping and had the warmest nights sleep in mine. I'd love nothing more than a new Venom but wont try one till I can afford to buy one...
I will check out the systems and see which is best for me, and will hopefully be ready to play soon!
Cheers & good winds
