These kites look seriously awesome steve, i should be in the shop today to have a look at them!
I know im still going to be riding ozone kite, i know them well and trust them even more.
As mention in the thread guys have riden there 11m's in gusting 30knt conditions, and this has been true over ALL of the instinct kites, they have huge depower and do munch gusts.
I still ride an 11m 1st gen instinct, and many times have had it in 25-30knt conditions, pull in a little trim to bring the bar closer to me when depowering on the bar. and im only a 65hg rider.
I know ill be saving pennies hardcore over winter, and stop spending them on my car LOL
Having a good look over the pics, the only thing i can say i would have like to have been different is the length on the depower strap, i have short arms, what can i say lol
Reli , from an 1 ex rebel flyer to soon to be another. My commets are based on the 07 model but should hold true for the 08 model.
The extra line you see is on the edge and the sport, it basically holds the tips (keeps the kite in an arc shape)to prevent the kite flattening out when it hits the water, this improves the relaunch ... it can be flown without it. Is no different to the rebel as far as relaunch goes. Very easy kite to relaunch. Just pull 1 line...
The central 5th line does not operate the same as your rebel. The rebel flags out on the 5th line....the ozone does not. The safety therefore should be hooked on to the flag out attachment on the steering lines above the bar when landing and launching but moved to under the bar once you are on the water. (for exprienced riders only) new riders should leave on the flag out line.
You will find the bar pressure almost non existant compared to your rebel but once you have flown it for a little while you will like the fact that you can stay out all day.
1 other thing you will notice is how stable these kites are in the air.
The edge out jumps the rebel and out hangs it big time. The technique is a little different, the rebel you can just pull on the bar and up you go. You do need good technique to jump the ozone. But especially the edge.. boosts huge.
My 07 13m edge gets my 100kgs going in about 15 knots on a 135 board really comes alive in 20 and keeps me going to high 30's, handles gust no problem and is an absolute pleasure to fly.
I think you will like this kite very much. I switched to Ozone from my rebel after my first ride and am still stoked.
The bar improvements where in response to feedback from nearly all riders and is the only thing that I could winge about on my 07 model. I am looking forward to your review.
Steve,
Who's the handsome devil on the beach holding the kite up in the air ? Is that you ? I always pictured you as much older and shorter amongst other things. The kites look awesome though. Can't wait to get that Edge in the water !
kite freak..... 2 posts...... 2 dumps, which brand do you sell ??? don't hide behind an alias. Be proud put your name up there ...
Avitar is Ozone, and I still own a 07 north rhino 10m for the really big days, last time I used this it was over 40knots ...I really like this kite too.
I used 14m rebel before I got the Ozone (and I still have it) so I guess that makes me fairly open minded. But at least I fly and buy a kite before I comment.!
Like the all the other Ozone owners .... I am really hanging out for the 08 edge,
suggest you try it before you bag it. In fact you can try my 07 edge anytime you like if you are from Queensland , I ll look after your single line kite while you are on the water.
thats 4 posts and still nothing nice to say
............I hope whoever kicked your dog gets hit by a car,[}:)] and you have a nice Australia day weekend.![]()
Steve ....... with the exta thin struts and leading edge and the 1 pump system I assume that the leading edge pressure is going to be higher than the 07.....whats the pump pressure required for the edge and has the pump been upgraded to handle the extra pressure required. I notice that with some other high pressure type kites the pump is barely able to do the job.
...baby wipes are softer and help keep you cool on a hot day, also good for getting bird**** off the car paint.
I was able to head into KP and have a look at a 12m light and 11m edge, and they both look sexual!
Also had a good look at the new bar setup with lines off the bar, and its very well made, and chicken loop safety is dead simple to use and is bombproof.
The new flag out loop on the 5th line is great too.
As i mention before my only comment is people with short arms may have trouble reaching trim strap.
Oh and the center line down to the chicken loop, looks like it will never ware out, and the bar has a polished alloy piece where that line runs thru the bar, it moves like SILK! even when your turning the bar hard.
G'day all. It seems obvious to me who kitefreak is. I am sure the rest of you SE QLD locals could guess. Dont worry kitefreak we are bringing the ozone to you. You will see one out at your patch, sandgate/brighton (07 model) this arvo doing the biggest longest jumps of anyone on that patch if we get any wind ask anyone who was out yesterday at the pools. Its ok to be scared kitefreak![]()
i was out yesterday and i think you stayed at the pools because you couldnt jump anywhere near my league,.why stay down wear the kiddies kite is it the only way you can look half decent...
Its true I am certainly no expert but i was on a 13 at 80kg and there was a fair bit of wind! hope we get the same today![]()
Where are the reviews, surely someone must have ridden one in decent wind by now.
Should have sent them over here to WA, we've had nothing but good winds. I see Ozone has finally updated their website with the new gear ozonekites.com/water
Can't wait, are they as good as the hype following them?
Only a few more sleeps before we get our own.
Good winds,![]()
Well I got to ride the 08 Sport2 11M yesterday for approx 3hrs, one word - awesome!
Wind was about 18-20 when I left the beach to head over to a secluded spot away from the craziness that is part of my local spot on a weekend.
Over where I was testing the kite the wind was a bit stronger and over the day it continued to build, when I came in it was solidly over 30 knots in the gusts, averaging 25-30 IMO wind readings from a windmeter 6-7klms upwind.http://www.bom.gov.au/products/IDN60901 ... 4767.shtml
At times the wind blew over 30 knots, but I was still comfortable and in control. I was riding my old slipper the faithful 1.32 07 FLX. With LF pro staps/pads
The kite goes upwind as good as or better than my other favourite 07/08 kites, being the SB3 10M, Waroo 11M 08, and the Rev 11M 08.
It easily jumps as high or higher than any of those kites, and is easy to redirect in the air, and was nailing most of my landings even at the start, I immediately felt at home on the kite.
(edit) I just had to add that the float/hangtime/glidetime, for this kite is awesome much better than last years Sport, the Edge must be incredible!
Rear line tension, in real wind is solid, feedback is good and you always know where the kite is without looking.
I set the bar to be powered/comfy for me in the middle of the depower line. I noticed that the canopy looked super smooth when the bar was pulled all the way in, the small but noticeable creases (in the pics I postedof a brand new unflown kite!) at the tips of the kite disappear when the kite is loaded.
Looked like the canopy was purpose designed like that, giving a fuller profile curve at full power or optimal AOA.
Anyway I just really enjoyed riding this kite, depower is excellent the kite has a large wind range and I did not adjust the trim at all over the course of the test. Moderate edging force keeps the power controllable, drives you upwind and allows huge boosts with ease.
Easy to steer one handed, I could switch to toeside and turn the kite back from low in the window and carve really fast powered turns just using one hand.
Part of what feels so good about this kite is the direct feel steering and power delivery, there are no pulleys at all, and the thin LE edge allows the kite to turn really sharply and responsively.
A couple of times I got out of shape and just let go of the bar, power from the kite drops 70-80% and the kite flys or hovers for enough time to allow any rider to get sorted or land a jump then just grab the depower line to get the bar back, just like I do on the other kites I mentioned.
Relaunch is dead easy, point the bar, self launch is easy too, using the usual /bow/hybrid pivot on a tip method (tested that on a sand bar, by myself) and self landed using the leash to flag to one front line after letting the kite rest on the sand bar. It just fell flat and sat there on the wet sand.
Another mate who was in another area of the bay tested the Edge 11M, hopefully he will make a review soon too.
Wind is up again, so I'm eating my breakky and heading out for some more!!!

2008 11M OZONE INSTINCT EDGE 2
After a long wait, I was finally able to fly the 2008 11m Instinct Edge yesterday at Kurnell with a few other people. You can see my review of the 07 which was the first time I’d flown an Ozone at:
www.seabreeze.com.au/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=30662
The following is a comparison (so far) of my experience with the 08 yesterday and the 07 which I’ve been flying (and love) for about 4 months now.
APPEARANCE: Build quality is the same high standard. The most noticeable differences to look at are the very narrow struts and leading edge, one pump tubes, an extra line on the 5th bridle and the wider wing tips. I also noticed two knots at the end of the 5th bridle attachment point.
PERFORMANCE: I flew this kite for less than an hour and will be able to add/confirm detail to this review later. But so far….. very similar to the 07 in most respects, just improved substantially in all areas. On pumping with One-Pump.. very easy with just a clip off of each strut. I’ve never enjoyed packing up One-pumps because of the residual air in the bladders. I’m happy to say that the pack up time and effort was absolutely no different to my 07. Although narrow, the struts seemed amply rigid with my normal pressure in the leading edge (not sure how much that is). I can’t comment on “cold water softening” as I did not put the kite in the water and have never experienced this softening effect previously.
The kite not only turned faster than the 07 but seemed to do so much better at low speed as well. Power through the turns is more smoothly delivered across the window, particularly in loops. The 08 is much faster across the wind window. I’m no expert, but I think the thinner LE makes the kite faster through the air in general. The wind increased from 15-27 knots during the day. No one was overpowered at any stage so I’m suspecting it’s high end is quite good. I can’t comment on the absolute low end as the wind was never really lighter than 15 or so knots. Jumping was typical Edge stuff…. high and long hang time. It felt a little better to jump than the 07. I think with a few more hours on the water to get the extra speed of the 08 dialed in, I’ll be able to say that the jumping is substantially better. Bar pressure seemed a little higher than the 07 which some think was too light anyway. The depower stroke at the bar seems longer also and the kite seems to shut down a little more than the 07. I don’t mind some residual pull in the kite personally, so this effect was neither here nor there for me.
I haven’t really found any negatives with this kite yet but will post them if I do. I believe that genuine feed back is a great way to improve our sport.
We have some good winds forecast this week which will give me more time on the 08 11 Edge. I’ll post any new info or changes to the above review as it comes to light.
Hope this was of some help.
Cheers,
IAN
ISPI did not get a new bar to use for his demo, we were short delivered, and will get the rest this week or early next week.
I have used the new bar and it is a much neater solution.
The trim strap webbing, which seemed to worry some, is now gone and is replaced by "beal" rope, its easy to reach and grip, and is smooth to adjust in the cleat.
There are flagging rings on both front lines, I used one of these to self land on my test of the Sport.
The rear line trimmers have a loop sewn around them to stop the end flapping, they are now hel to the floats loosely and cannot flap.
The loops sewn around them are both red and I am sorting that with Ozone, only one should be red, there should never be any red on the right side of any bar.
We will sort that one minor issue with the production bars for sure.
Some people complained to me about long leaders on the 07 bar, but I never saw that as an issue, rather I saw it as a safety feature, especially for relaunching and self landing.
The grip on the bar is better, the diamter is smaller and not as tiring to hold on long sessions, the inside ends of the bar are now foam covered and the actual bar looks like it must be made by the same company making F-One bars, the ends are virtually identical to the bars that come with Bandits.
Lines are the same super low stretch that we are used to from Ozone.
The ends are kook proofed and colour coded.
The moulded depower loop (c-loop) is a big improvement and is easily reloaded in the water without putting your hands in danger. Would prefer a push away release, however the release is well designed and should not be easily, accidentally operated. Tension on the release can be altered by adjusting the bungee cord length.
A leash can be clipped inside the dpower loop.

Hi All,
Got a second session on the 2008 Edge 11 yesterday in a solid 25 knots. I pumped up my 07 11 Edge as well and changed back and forth between the 07 and 08 models quite a few times so I could get a good back to back comparison.
I can confirm my previous review of the 08 model. The 07 is still a great kite. For 08, it seems they've just refined, tweaked and improved most of the flying characteristics. A logical progression... everything is just quite a bit better. Also, crashed the kite a couple of times (lets keep that our little secret) and the 08 seems to roll over and re-launch really easily.
* Turns a bit faster and much smoother.
* Has a longer depower throw at the bar.
* Power shuts down more when the bar is all the way out.
* Quite a bit faster through the window.
* Feels like it jumps and hangs even better.
* Super quick to pump up.
In short, I really liked the kite and saw some other people using it getting some massive jumps yesterday. I'm not one to generally upgrade kites every year but would really like to get the 08 when my piggy bank will allow it.
PS: Still haven't tried it in really light conditions for the low end but will post when I do.
Cheers,
IAN
Anymore news on the Egde ? has anyone bought one and fully tried it out yet ?
C'mon men im hungry for info !![]()
JIp
I have the 13m . So far only been able to pump it up nd fly it on the beach in a below 10 knot winds. But I can tell you that it turns quicker already, is much flatter than the 07. The chicken loop is a big improvement over the 07. The 1 pump is nice although not that much quicker than the old system. I hope it is reliable as time goes on. The bar is about the same The jury is still out for me on the tabs n the bar ends. I didn't have them on my 07 kite. The lines were connected direct. .........hopefully today there will be some wind with the storm fronts heading our way. I will post a review as soon as I get a session in.
Rusty
Nice one i will be reading for sure ! im holding back on buying 08 s only because i love my 07 sports but im looking to moving onto the edge now becuase of the added hang time really. Although i have had some lovely floating jumps on my sports!
Cheers
Jp
Flew the 08 11M Edge in 25-30 knots. I weigh about 82Kg and had no problem in this wind.
Jumps were huge with excellent hang time.
Stability was good as usual with these kites, and relaunch was easy.
These kites are so smooth through the air, and are unlike anything else. You have to try one to appreciate the obvious lack of drag and high level of performance.
I was so impressed, I bought mine today. ![]()
ipsi .....just buy the edge, you won't be disappointed. After my first session earlier in the week there is no doubt in my mind tht the 08 edge is gonna be 1 of those iconic kites. It is smooth stable, bar pressure just right (to light on the 07) powerful, everything about it is very good. I can't see any weak points yet. I am still looking foward to some big winds I was a little nervous having ordered mine before I had even tested one but I am delighted with the kites performance. The comment from the deigners notes is bang on ... "the 08 range is an all around improvement on the 07 range"
