Thumbs Up

Rider: 80 kg without beers
Style: Surf
Weather: 15+ knots
Build Quality: 10/10
Satisfaction: 10/10
Disclosure: Paid $20 for this thing, spent more on wax

Only had a couple of sessions on this thing, but stoked at how a skimboard makes you improve your skills.

Riding a 9m, winds were light at 16kts and could hold ground alright given cross on conditions and 3ft tops on the sets. Heap of face plants later and couple roughed up elbows, things progressed to shuvits on waves and flat. Ate it on few waves trying - these things hurt the shins when they catch ya out. Found that the profile of this board seems to give you something to feel an edge on the tail, but in light winds you tend to bog trying to keep the nose out of breaking white wash going out. Would be alright with 20kts i guess. Gybes are similar to your usual strapless surf sesh - but not really Not having fins on a board makes it do weird sh17 if you take your time gybing

Kite control in this light wind was interesting, purely because of having to go downwind so much to get board speed up initially.Trick i found was not going full on the down stroke to avoid back stalling. Maybe if i was few kegs lighter on the day...
For abit i was thinking i should put some fins on this thing for those lightwind crap days just for fun. But having spent some more time on it, I reckon its worth just going no fins. Never really got why some people kite with the boots/no fins combo. I now get it, trying to pop this nugget is something special. Havnt tried much more then a couple half hearted kickers in the surf so dunno how it will be in 20+

Not sure if I could justify spending $400 odd on an exile quality board, but will spend some more time on my woody 41" for sure. You could just make one from marine ply, but there's plenty of gumtree cheapies around which just need your wax of choice no jigsawing or lacquering required

Every strapless kiter should spend some time fin free on a skimboard IMO just dont go for that toeside punt too soon
