Just picked up a 2012 North Race Ltd for cheap. went out today 10-12knts on a 2012 11m Cab drifter!!!! awesome fun.
For anyone who wants a light wind machine, there are some absolute bargains on race boards atm. You don't need race kites to enjoy them. I used to have the whole race kit thing but got rid of it all about 18 months ago... couldn't resist a bargain. . far out its fun, fully lit with next to no whitecaps on a wave kite hahahaha. awesome. if anything I think it might be more fun on the mid aspect kite than the race ones.....
The only other people out were people in the river mouth using the run out to help and on big (17m) kites..
get into it!!![]()
true you can ride with any kite if you are free riding . When it comes to competetion they won't be allowed and you will also get killed upwind and downwind against a race kite but i totally get where you are coming from .
There are some very good bargains going around at the moment
What is cheap - aren't they like $1000+ for something second hand ? And then you have to buy fins ! Puts me off a bit for something to mess about on.
Yeah wrong kite for racing, but gees, if u had three or four mates going at it in the ocean km offshore be sik fun. great adrenalin rush in 12 knts
i picked up mine for under 600 with a board bag and really sweet fins. the board has some repairs but its still light and hammers. there are many on the net for 600-700.
its a lot of bang for your buck. dont buy new kites, use your normal every day kite, yep wont win a race, but you will be grinning from ear to ear
Exactly!!
It doesn't matter what board, what fins or what condition. Get one for the right price that works for you and get out there on the biggest kite you own, you'll have a ball! The learning curve will bring back that stoke you had when you first started, every session you just progress SO much.
Not only light wind . I haven't ride a twin tip in under 25 kts in the last 12 months , once it gets over 25 kts the race boards become scary fast .
i have a speed puck gps on the race board and I have clocked speeds of 28-29 kts in around 10 -12 kts of wind . The other day I went out and it was 6-8 kts max and got to 23kts.

That's a bargin
Is there much of a difference between say a Sector 60 style board, to a full on race board in the light winds?
Yeah that is pretty sweet. I was out this afternoon at Trigg from 2-3, was pretty light, Ocean Reef was 8-10knots so I guess Trigg was below that. I barely held ground on that Shinnster Puppet has (160x46) and I reckon the Raceboard was the next move. Is the WA racing scene picking up ? Is that why these boards are available ?
WA race scene is definitely 'picking up'.
So much so its all a blacked out monster - if you were told the latest updates you would have to die!
Life safe announcements promised soon.
good to see some interest. i hope as race boards become more affordable we will see groups "social" racing in the ocean like the old days on windsurf slalom kit... that wasso much fun.. tailwalking race boards in ocean swells with 6.5's up.... arrrrr... oooops showing my age :)
As long as everyone keeps pushing for kite racing organisers to include TT participants then the racing scene can only grow.
Very few will ever join the 'racing' scene if theres a pre-req of having all the latest kosher 'race' gear.
Keep race days open to all.
A few experiences of the thrill of racing - even if its just fun day out on a TT to start with - will set the hook.
AND - no damage done if it doesnt.
Personally I can see myself being part of this whole high-end kite racing discipline but never participating beyond the 'fun' TT class.
And enjoying the company, snags & beers at the apres-race get-togethers.

hey mate, big difference especially in low winds. Raceboards perform a lot better in general. You got lot more volume in the race boards and u can actually ride them on the fins which you can on a sector.
Yep def better than big TT and easier to ride than a full blown race board.... the race boards need a bit of time on them to get them up on the fins and leeward rail... but worth the effort!!
When the wind dies off enough for my 7m to be manageable on a 132cm twintip this will definitely be worth a thought!
But still, Sector 60 is better than a big TT, correct?
depends! The monster doors are better for free ride in light winds- boosting, back/front rolls..
