Rider: 87 KG, Freeride and love looping
Weather: 15-30 knots

My Comments:

Hey Guys

I am so much struggling crazy. I have a 12 Crazyfly 12m that I love, however it doesn't not bring me to the 25 and up knots as you can guess. However love crazyfly brand

I want to go for a 9meters but very strongly hesitation with Edge or C4. Edge seems like a race or very fast kite for upwind, and C4 for Freestyle, which I love as well

I hear the C4 is underpower compare to the Edge. And I would like to have a 9 meters. So if I choose Edge should I go for a 9 m, and C4 10 meters??? I even heard there is a 2 meters gap is this right?

Which one do you guys favors? if you like a bit of freeride and freestyle. Don't want to go for catalyst as they have only 10 m and will be too close to my 12.

Which ones will you go for Edge or C4? Which size if you had a 12?

Let me know, keep thinking but no solutions

Cheers

When you say freestyle, what do you mean by freestyle? Unhooked handle passes?

Do you like to play around in the surf?

At your weight I would say a 10m edge actually, even an 11m if you want to be powered in the 16 to 20 range. But will be a handful over 25.

Very very different kites man, you may need to give more in terms of what actual riding you do and are looking to do, water conditions and board choice/s.

yes well I passed some of the unhooked, but not all :))

For the surf, actually no. Prefer flat or choppy but no surf.

Really a 10? wont be too much redundant with my 12?

I just read the edge is pretty slow at turns, and I am just afraid that s a very fast kite, but I am just afraid it might be abit (boring ), if you start wanted to do tricks?

looping - c4
unhooked wake style - c4
boost and glide -edge
crazy upwind, fast board speed, and wide wind range - edge
light bar pressure - edge
heavy bar pressure - c4

I'm 82 kg and fly a 10c4. Its boring bellow 20 knots for me and toping out 30 knots.

Well you did say 15 to 30? What's the comfortable top end of your 12? Is it the 20 to 30 you are really looking for? Then the 10m C4.

You haven't answered what you want to progress into? Would you like to move more into the freestyle?

Don't discount the 10m catalyst just yet. it may the bridge that serves you well between kind of unhooking into some serious freestyle.

The C4 is now a really dedicated C style kite now, great slack in the lines afforded. Heavier bar pressure though. Still had a freeride setting, but it;s not the older model.

The fact that you have flat/choppy water and no surf, then I'm thinking the C4. The edge is a very different kite.

I don't often post these days, especially unnessesarily.

However, in the Ozone range, the needs you describe will be perfectly filled with the Catalyst. Patrick Blanc rides the Catalyst at a very high level in competition. It can also be used from beginner up. That, should be perfect the perfect mix you seek.

Also, it does come in a 9m for 2014.

Check this link for details: ozonekites.com/products/water-kites/catalyst

Contact your local dealer for details/demo.

Hope this helps.

Well my 12 m is comfortable from 14 to 23 roughly. After I have almost depower on the bar, which is of course boring when gusts blow.

Definitely searching for the 22 to 30ish side

Well definitely for the progress, I wish to go more on the jumps and do tricks. As riding hard and edged is nice, but I think the jumps and tricks are the spices.

But of course freeride is also fun...I actually wanted to go for the CAT but thought I needed a 9m not 10..thats why I took it out,

Yes mate, it does

Check the link direct to Ozone that I gave you. Remember, I'm talking about the 2014 model. 9 & 7m added this year.

9 sounds a good size considering the facts you give. However, if you're not sure, wait a couple of weeks and enjoy the ability to demo them.

Have fun, glad to have made your day! Now, if only someone would make my day a bit better!

Stay safe.

I guess if you don't have any other kites other than the 12 then go 9m. It will be boring at 20 knots but fully lit at 30'

Yes I'm familiar with the crazy fly gear being the resident gear slut . They make superb boards.

Get a 10 then and leave the crazy stuff alone for a bit then buy an cheaper second hand 8 as you won't use it much. No point in having money sitting in your shed.

Solved.

Well i guess that the theory of the chocolate box at the end...You try one, and and always wants to try another one that will fit better....and then you end of with a full quiver..Been surviving in Europe with 12, but in NZ, no way...otherwise i miss 50% of the fun !

@Diverbelow - Cat definitely comes in a 9M this year but that size is not available yet, will be on the order system soon. The 2013 C4 is also a kite that could suit you, especially if you just buy it kite only and fly it on the Crazy Fly bar. One of the main things that makes it more suited to wakestyle is the bar it comes with. The 2013 C4 bar is a large part of what makes the kite more suited to wakestyle - it has a substantially shorter depower throw, and a much larger chicken loop AND the bar is only 45cm long for all sizes. I have flown the 2013 C4 on a standard 50cm or 54 cm Ozone bar for the 13M and with the kite set on the "Freeride" setting, it is an awesome kite for old school hooked in freeride, boosts huge, great hangtime and glide medium but responsive and reactive bar feel. I really like the quick and reactive way that it flies on this setting.
Tonight I flew a 10M 2014 Cat, feels quicker and even more solid and stable than the 2013, the bridle changes were noticeable as soon as I launched it. rode a 5'10" Cab Skillet epoxy on choppy flat water with small wind chop in around 20 knots, and I would have to say its my favourite kite in the Ozone range, still. I'm 77kg, even in the lulls which were prob as low as 17/18 no problem staying upwind, turns were fast, and putting the kite where I needed it to be was very simple and inuitive. Toeside riding one handed, no worries, fast downwind gybes, the Cat showed excellent balance and drift, this will be a fun kite in waves. Based on last years boosting performance this 2014 version will be at least as good if not better, the Cat boost huge with excellent glide and hangtime, easy to loop and also redirect for a late downloop transition and soft catch landing.
The Edge does not turn slow, but it does turn with a wider arc than either the Cat or C4, so when it used for looping the loops are powered and you end up going sideways with a fair bit of pull, I don't Edges larger than 9 any good for waves at all. If you want something all round go Catalyst, and with a bit more performance unhooked, then go the C4.
Edge is old school hooked in freestyle and racing machine.

shouldnt be too hard to get a ride on an edge, as a couple of locals have them as there kite of choice, ive owned old and new 7,9,10,11 edges and owned cats and c4s, the c4 imo is a bit more technical to fly properly but will pay you back in performance and flying skills, basically itll make you a better rider, for me the cats lacked grunt even in big winds , but i ride agressively and this was on the older versions, the edges are my fave kite and the 10mtr new model has been my fave of the sizes and models, short rear settings at the bar and light settings at the kite in 25knts, doesnt get any better for my style, if you think or have been told you carnt do freestyle check out yo pud the kta race and freestyle champ on the edges, if you go the edge get a good edging board youll need it

Sorry one important thing worth mentioning, if you can see yourself bashing the kite around then don't look at the edge, its a bit like taking a ferrari offroad, you'll damage it,

Hey thanks a bunch for all the tips !! Got the same info on the 9m that it should be coming out soon in a month time also...Anyway here in NZ, the Summer sea breeze is coming so the high winds wont be the norm until next autumn i think. So still a bit time to decide... Tomorrow I ll have a demo on the C4 so let see what it brings ! When you see it from outside, it looks like to turn so fast ! Impressive...Definitely looking forward to try it !

Coming actually from a wakeboard background, especially in cable park ! will definitely be looking as some fast moves, thats why the CAT or C4 might be the best.

I am still hesitating on the side, though, 9 or 10....10 seems really the size favorite of many, and as i am around 86 I might be able to hold it to 30knots, while not having the hassle of the 9 in the lighter 20 winds...Hmmmmm not sure....God let see:)

Dude How much you weight? It seems that you can bring the CAT to up 25 Knots Easely with light bar ? Really? as you have a 9 and 10...If you had to choose while keeping the 11 or (12 for me) which one will you keep !? knowing that gust here can be up to 30 easely. Winds mainly around 22-

Nah bro. Wind from now till end of December can easily crank to 8 and 6m weather. This is the best time of year for wind.

jan/ feb are lighter.
march april may, funky winds anything can happen.
June-sept winter storms
oct-dec, cranken spring westerlies. I've had my 8m and 6m out most this month compared to any other month this year so far.
