My Comments:
Hi Peeps,
Finally got our first kites today and rode the 9m Ozone Instinct Sport + for the first time.
For bar, bag, construction etc please refer to my other post on the Edge RX as both are same in this respect.
www.seabreeze.com.au/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=46390
For the kite itself the only difference between the Edge RX and the Sport + is the plan shape, number of struts and profiles, also the Sport + has the ability to customize the bar pressure by fixing the steer bridle to "Tractor" for more bar pressure and slower steering or "Hotrod" for less bar pressure and faster steering.
The ride
The Sport + feels different to the 08 version, quite a bit different. for starters it has more bar pressure which is good, and some of the lightning fast responsiveness has been toned down a bit which, depending on what you want is either good or indifferent.
It has more low end power which is good and has sacrificed a little top end range to get it IMHO. The kite has less depower than the previous model and feels like it flies off the front lines a bit more than the previous model.
Jumping is similar to last years, hangtime is similar to last years, but the power in turns is greater. I only half looped the kite on the tail end of a big jump and the kite has MASSIVE power in the loop. The Horizontal component of a full kiteloop will be for the seriously brave me thinks. We did ride it over powered today and would have much prefered to be on the 7m, but it was no problem holding it down. Really need to test in in more comfortable conditions
The bar pressure will feel great to newcomers to Ozone, but is a little heavier that previous, same small depower throw. Super easy relaunch. Very stable and no sign of stall or luffing, didn't matter what I did.
Conclusion
I think that the kite has been aimed at more advanced riders this year who are looking to push the freestyle. It is still a great freeride kite, but the slightly slower steering, and more power will suit the wakestylers. I can't wait to loop one in decent wind, should be terrifying ![]()
I like it a lot, but it's different to last years and will take some getting used to. Again I'd love to hear others views who rode it today. I'll add to this review once I have had a bit more time on it. For now I'm saying it's as good as last years, just different in regards to flight characteristics. As for construction, bag, bar and 4 lines etc its much better! It really deserves a good test. Drop in and see us or visit us at Kitestock.
Cheers and good winds,![]()
I had a chanse to use the Sport+ 11m while visiting Australia for a few weeks. And I thought Id comment on slowerer steering and response.
On my first day on the kite I had the exact same impression as you but after a few days I had to change my mind. To me, it seems like that turning the kite has a more progressive relation to bar-input. Meaning very litle turn on the first few degrees of bar turning, and very much turn comming later as you turn the bar more.
After being on the 2008 model for a year where you just thought to move bar and that was enought to turn the kite it took me a good two sessions to dare using the bar properly for the 2009 model. (you are right, you dont want to loop if not intended :) ). I hade some real problems to time my jumps right in the beginning, possibly becouse of this?!.
Once I got to move the bar a litle more it felt just as responsive as last years model. And on my third day I loved they way it turns, or even doesnt:
I think it is basicaly same turning with more a more stable feel - less moving the kite unintentionally. I can imagine that this is good for the wakestyler for sure, just like you said.
It will be interesting to see how other riders progress with the kite. I am expecting much to hapend with my riding this year :)
Interesting. Good review Darren...
I'm interested in how the Sport+ performs in the waves, I've been enjoying the 7m SportII's responsiveness and stability, it seems the Sport+ might have sacrificed some of that, but more grunt and powered turns sounds good.
I know Ozone push the Light as a wave kite, I tried the 2007's, but they were too slow for the type of riding I like. Maybe the new Light is worth a look again? (but that's another subject)
I'm also wondering how the pulleyless SLE bridle set up performs, both versus the 5 line system and against other SLE set up's with pulleys. Any sign of the kite collapsing in the centre?
Looking forward to a demo!![]()
Hey Tobes,
Cheers mate, I try and keep all my reviews "real", warts and all. I figure no point telling you it's black and then when you test or buy it, it's white! ![]()
I'm hoping to review and ride both the Light XC and the Sport again as I need more time on them to get what the Mlkman is talking about. I think I know what he means, but need time to ride and adjust to the new kites.
More later....![]()
....so...I am testing 9 over the weekend.....and bloo_dy can't wait now....only one more sleep and then 20 knt NE and flat water and me 9...Will pot my thoughts afterwards but something tells me already that I am so going to enjoy the ride.
