Recently i spend the good part of the day driving around researching locations to kite surf. After checking out the third spot and 1hr and a 1/23 away from home. We got all the gear out sand progressed down the beach... my mate started to pump the kite up and after three pumps heard a pop, we kind of didn't know what happened and after a bit notice the side of the pump had split right way up the side. With no success at trying ways to hold the split gap together with both hands and have the other pumping could not get the kite up to enough pressure. tried to manually pump it up with breathing in the value but this was no good... the trip was over.

The tip i'm posting here is that i bought a new pump and it turns out it's the same pump. I have duck taped all the way around the pump and all the way up in the theory that hopefully that helps prevent it spitting up the side again.

I'm not sure how it happened but i think because my mate chipped in to try and help pump the kite up may have pumped faster then i normally do and caused to much pressure in the pump shaft?

Hey, after using those pumps for a few years and finding out the hard way that
they are not made too last pumping your kite for any longer than a season cause the seals
go on the shaft and inside the valve's fail.. I tried a island pump or Newport pump. Best $200
odd bucks I ever spent. And I don't get a sore back from pumping up my big kite's anymore
that means a lot more time on the water.

Thanks for constructive info Brisbud.

I did get a soar back a bit. I intend to upgrade to a better quality of everything if i keep going more after this years go so a better quality pump sounds worthwhile as you suggest!

Yeah the new ones from North, Ozone, Airush are much better than the previous ones. Different seal around the shaft, and internally, I think. The ones with the round, hollow handles...

Ditch the gauge though,

What's wrong with the Gauge? I usually just aim for the middle of the green and it's worked well so far.

The 'O' ring inside seems to have oil on it! Maybe this needs regular oil added as it could be sitting in the hot sun hours on end or drying up causing plastic to crack. I dunno just guessing i haven't used these things long.
