Just landed some of first jumps and would like to log my progression and ask some questions. All ready watched/read almost everything available online. Conditions med to low winds, speed 3 15, landing 3/5 jump.

- Its fun
- Found that i can jump higher if go bit crosswind to max speed than try to pop. Had some wipeouts when no pop, than kite just pull's me downwind
- I'm light, 65kg so kite redirected from 9 to 12 will pull me of the board at half of its way to 12, found hard to hold it any longer than 11
- Heavier guys with same kite just somehow managed to pop when it's close to 12 and that looks as good jump
- Found it hard to jump on "wrong side", i'm goffy so i think when my left foot is at the from i'm still bit too confused to jump

Ok.

Speed 3 15m likes a slightly different technique than your standard lei.

Gain speed. In fact go as fast as you can while still being able to load and pop. If you can't load and pop your going too fast or too powered. Load an pop like normal. But don't send the kite back too far. Send it straight up to the zenith. Maybe a little bit back past the zenith. But not much. Certainly nowhere near as much as an lei.

Pull the bar in at the moment you pop out of the water.

Then set a slow redirect going. So the kite so the kite is slowly turning all the time. Then as you reach max height let the bar out. Maybe halfway, maybe more it will depend on how your kite is trimmed. The will speed the kite up. Then as you spot your landing (maybe 5 foot off the deck) redirect harder and bar full hard in. That will give you a pillowy soft landing.

did some first proper jumps in bit less than 20kts.

it was 15-17 kts. really powered up on 15. got best heights when send it from 11 or 1 with lots of speed, rather than sending it from from weary low. (9 or 3)
but i still have some feeling that will go highest when i somehow managed to get good speed and hold it till 11 or 12 after starting hard redirect from almost sea level.

first proper was after few warm ups & redirects and lets say test jumps. i decided to wrap one to max, following everything i got sorted in my head, sheeting, redirect, spot lenading, etc.. went airborne for 3sec min. Its more fun that i was think it would be. :) haha

Found that

is most important thing with foils. if it stalls there is big chance that it's gonna wrap into itself.
did not have single bad landing, just bad take off's. probably because i'm still too concentrated with everything "how to"

No it's not important. Tension on the lines is important.

If you redirect too early, you'll land with too much speed downwind. You'll end up riding at the kite and slacking the lines, which will have one of three results:
1. nothing bad happens
2. if the kite is flying across the window, it'll stall and invert or bow tie.
3. if the kite is diving, it'll clam shell.

You can recover the latter two, but better is the correct technique - send it and leave it. Time the redirect so the kite goes over the zenith just before you touch down - you'll land feather light, no matter how high you jump, and the kite will complete the power stroke nicely and you'll ride off nicely.

You only ever want to fly the kite round up there if you a. redirect too soon or b. you get an elevator ride and go straight up on a gust, losing all forward speed...

If you're having problems holding an edge, try sheeting out once you've sent it, or bear off downwind a tad as the kite is climbing to get under it then edging for the jump, or just using your whole body and leaning back like Lenten.

Speed3 15 is my favorite kite to jump. Great boost and hang time. If you pull aggressively on the bar to send, it results in the most violent yank off the water I've experienced.

Don't forget to point your board down wind on landing otherwise your edge could skip out.

It will be your favourite until you try a speed 4. Then you will be, "whaaaaaaaaat! now i need new kite". And if you then try one of the new breed of race kites sonic/chrono/elf etc

Yourl be like "FAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARK!. What is this extra level of madness I didn't even realized existed".....

Well that's what happened to me.

and then if you try a paraglider you will be like: "FAAAAAAAAAARK! this is pretty much all I was doing with my foil kites."

very true. I just tried the Chrono 12m from a friend and WOAAHHH this was insane, in like 12knots and everyone else still stuck static flying their kites, even a 17 Zephyr had no chance against the Chrono. It just stayed up there wanted to fly. It could not wait long enough for me to dive her.
now that is a sweet ass kite.

speed when jumping foils looks like most important factor. smooth action also.
today tried "little bit back past the zenith". then guy from beach sad me to pop when feel lift from harness, not earlier.

i was poping too early, and not sending kite at zenith, or bit back.

i would say best jump was 2sec hang. i did not count but i had time to spot landing. 15-17kts.
very happy with results

Very true. I can go upwind on my 12m chrono when all other lei's are doing the walk of shame. even the big 15 and 17's.

Yep. Speed is your friend. Go as fast as you can while still being able to load and pop. Also a kicker is your friend too. Time your high speed pop with an approaching wave and BOOOOM!. It doesn't even need to be very big. even a little 6" piddler will send you 50% higher.

PS 15-17 is a sweet boosting wind for the 15m s 3

15-17 is for doing floaty sent rotations and transitions, old school. 20 plus is for boosting

I can't figure out what's going on in that video... Looks like you're not loading up the kite, and just sending it, and it's yanking you up and down to splash.

Using a kicker is effective IMO cos you can storm into it at full speed and just lean back, holding your line and sending the kite. Releasing your edge is almost done for you. Flat water boosting is harder because you have to do the hard work.

By way of training, I suggest practicing on land... The Progression landboarding DVD has a good exercise that is basically sending the kite from 11 to 1, leaning back into the harness from your heels then letting the kite pull you up as it crosses the zentith. Increase the aggresiveness of the send and how much you sheet in to increase height. Just be ****in careful.

Cant find a YouTube of it, but it kinda looks like this:

Good hang time is going up, spotting someone on the beach having a BBQ, shouting "hey cook a sausage for me too bitches!", then reaching the apex
