Hi all just getting into kiteboarding I'm up and riding but still have some learning to do. Looks like I'm leaving the sunny coast to go and work in rockhampton. so I have been wondering what it is like to kite around yepoon and emu point, is ok for begginers/intermediate and wondering about stingers [ do you have to wear stinger suits) and Crocks (do I have to carry a gun).

Had a short stay in yepoon recently and kited every day. For the most part I would say it's close to an ideal learning place.during my stay there was only small waves(I guess this isnt always the case) but must be protected by reefs. Wind around 15 knts. Heaps n heaps of space, you would have to go looking for other kiters, I was only there during the week and didn't come across anyone, but I guess when your learning it's nice to have someone near by. Have fun man.

bundydan don't stress. The Yeppoon and Emu Park areas represent some awesome kite country and that is where i learnt to kite. I am lucky to manage visits back there every month and it is good enough for me to have kites and boards stashed there to use. Check out the link for the local kitesurf club, drop them an e-mail and you should be able to make some contacts. http://www.capkitesurf.com.au/ . The hardest thing is to find someone to kite with so Yeppoon main beach on a weekend is a good place to start. Once you are up and running there are a good dozen locations from Kepple Sands in the south to Cario bay in the north (google map it). Bring your surfboard as when a decent swell comes in you can get reliable surf to the north at big dune. Happy hunting.

thanx guys sounds great , still wondering about stinger suits and if there is many crocks around the beaches and river mouths. sharks don't really bother me but crocks scare the crap out of me.

Don't worry about crocks, more chance of stepping on a sting-ray. Rare also to see a box jellyfish. They do get irulandji but almost exclusively off shore around the Keppel Islands. The last couple of years has seen an explosion in the number of "blubber" jellyfish, these can cause minor itching and flare ups depending on your skin type (minor price to pay for a kite though). Blue bottles turn up from time to time in season but i am sure you would be familiar these, a stinger suit is good to have when you see them washed up on the beach. Just get out there and get into it.

hey guys,

As gdog said, crocs aren't a worry and in ten years of kiting I've never worn a stinger suit and am yet to be stung while kiting at Yeppoon or anywhere else in the area..

Pretty much any beach is fine to kite, if you manage to find someone else out kiting, just go in the same spot, at least then you'll have someone to help out and lend a hand if you need..

I'll be down this saturday, will probably head to main beach or farnborough if the wind gets up, I ride a blue/yellow/white naish kite, come say hi if you make it down (:

Hey I'm going to be heading up end of this week for a few days on Keppel Island and hoping to get a kite in, is the area around the island protected or is it advisable to not kite the island.
Any advise welcome :)

Thanks,
Rob.L

Hi there amigos, I usually kite Keppel sands beach right next to emu park but the Cap Coast has many great beaches for Kiting, farnbourough is a standout as well as Mulumbin beach and fishermans beach emu park. Most of the time the wind blows from the south east and usually starts picking up after about 11 am we dont usually get the same sort of break you get down on the Sunny coast. We get a lot less power and a shorter stand up chop. Thats why i enjoy Keppel sands beach with a constant breeze and a good range of conditions from shallow water to deep seas with some surf across the sandbanks out further.
Probably the most likely place to get eaten by a croc but have never seen one yet. Some blue bottle jellyfish come in with a north easterly but not often.
Keppel island I would use Long beach on the south end of the island good constant breeze and big islolated beach to land on. Beautifull spot. with a south easterly.
Other good spots are the spit on main beach just watch out for tourists and boats or wreck beach out the the easterly side of the island, great for northeasterlies with a decent swell breaking on the southern end of the beach, beware can be sharky. Hope this helps

Hey guys, had a really good weekend of wind and as a result, two solid days of kiting at Mulambin beach.. Saw a few learners about that just seemed to be riding alone and it got me thinking, maybe this weekend(saturday might be alright at this stage) we could just pick a spot and all meet up? As Boroda said, makes it a bit safer and you'll have more experienced riders there to help out, get to know some others that kite etc.. Feel free to send me a message or post on here if you guys are keen (:

Hey, I'm definitely keen to have someone To go out with. I'm a very very basic beginner so it would be great to have someone else to go out with as I haven't been game enough to go out by myself yet

Hi all Kiters on the Capricorn Coast. The wind is cranking. A few of us are driving up the beach to kite Sandy Point (Saturday 11th). Endless flat water ponds and waves off the sand bars. Leaving as the tide permits around 12 from Bangalee. Bring all your toys and a small kite. Should be fun. Hope to catch up with everyone. Cheers.
