Gosh fellas.

Go have a lesson first before you consider buying a kite. Once you can fly kites well, go ask your instructors and local kite stores for a demo of their kites.

Otherwise I haven't found a problem with LF Sessions, Waroos and Slingys which are always popular.

Hi Greamette,

Pay no attention to them blokes. There are lots of good kites out there from 08 and even a few really good 07's if you know where to look. Find someone whom you can trust to help guide you into the right gear. Lots of ruthless people keen to take advantage of the unwitting.

Definately get a lesson or two as it's not the same as windsurfing. You need a good school or instructor, then they will likely advise you on what gear would suit you best.

As for the gear to get you into your chosen style, as a learner I'd be less concerned about buying a kite that is good for speed and jumps and for the beginning, get something easy to relaunch, has good power and depower and has good easy to operate safety systems.

I would be looking at something like (and in no particular order) Airush Flow, Ozone Instinct Sport, Cabrinha Switchblade, Best Waroo, North Rebel and so on. These kites are middle of the road general purpose kites that will hold their second hand value well and be easy to move on once you have finished with them.

Once you master the basics and can hold your own in a variety of conditions, then grab something sweet like the Ozone Edge II, or Airush Vapor which I happen to sell . Both are good fast kites and boost well. But not for learning on!

Welcome to the dark side! Contact your local school for a lesson and enjoy!

Good winds,

Despite the apparent excess of w%nkers as shown via this thread, there are lots of good blokes that kite. When you're learning you'll find other kiters at the beach willing to talk and give you advice too. Good advice from Kitehard and Liz

1 get lesson [if you dont you will die] not joking
2 bow kite or hybrid [easy up wind easy relaunch fast progression]
3 twin tip board [something around 140 cm and more than 40cm wide . you want some thing that gets up and planes fast and is good in light wind to start with.
4 smile your haveing the best fun possible

you will pick it up faster than most because you already have knowledge on how the wind works. but a lesson or 2 will make it safer and you`ll progress faster.
cheers and welcome to the dark side.

My 2 cents worth, good idea to learn safety before flying the kite. eg no how to selfrescue and eject safely. This is best done via a kite school. I started to fly the kite in waist high water about 100m from shore and practiced relaunching, bodydragging. i think this is a good idea so that if you power the kite and lose control you wont get hurt, just a bit of water up your nose. Also its best to get out of peoples way, i used to walk a few hundred meters downwind of other kiters, then you dont get in the way and you can concentrate on your kite. once you can bodydrag in both directions get on the board and dont look back.
Kite surfing is more about commonsense and patience and if you dont rush you will have a blast.

At 85 kg, you will need something around 11/12M to start off with, in winds from 12/13 -22/25 knots.
Twin tip board is easiest to learn on, you may want to move to a surfboard later because of you windsurfing and snowboarding experience, and because you want to ride in waves!

Good 07 and 08 kites to look for would be Cabrinha SB3's or SB2's, Best Waroo 08's, Slingshot T2 or T3, Ozone Sport1 or Sport11, Naish Boxer SLE, or Cult, but if you find a bargain ask away on here and read the threads Laurie posted.

Get a lesson!

Welcome Grahamette

I started windsurfing back in 1981 - and have recently started kiteboarding !

Everyone prior to actually getting lessons from a very knowledgeable friend, said that it completely different to W/surfing...

It was a complete load of Bull**
As KiteHard says - Sales w*nkers everywhere

Youll pick it up fairly easily with snow & surf skills, and if you werent scared to wave jump - youll be popin out 30 footers without thinking. Yeee Haaaa

***** A FEW LESSONS ARE A MUST, humble pie tastes great when you have a renewed interest in watersports & LIVE to tell about it !!!!!!

The Safety release use, needs to be an instant reaction - See the TROPICAL STORM FAY video clip youll understand

When its around 40+ real knots - we'll dust off the wavesailin gear again

Hi wodgina

personally - 40 + knots is fun for w/surf wavesailing or flat water, under that - kitesrfing rules !!!

That Fay storm clip is why my common sense kicks in and the kite gets bagged...

Its one thing to hold the kite in that wind - its another to rip it up with probable gusts to 50 -60 in storm / cyclone conditions.

sheet out the boom on a w/surfer, you stop..

Kites do not have 100% De power in very strong winds. they keep pulling.

I hope you meant me.

Cheersz

yeah cheers for that, I really wanted to hear the the view of someone who enjoys both!
I love watching the the windsurfers when it's 30-35 knots down at Scabs and there absolutey killing it on a really strong seabreeze, but under that it looks like a lot of hard work. A lot of pumping the sail etc I'm still very impressed.
Kiting seems to cover most bases. I'm about to start my first season kiting and I'm way too excited. Just need to sort out putting straps on one of my surfboards.

baaaah..., you're all a bunch of limp wristed girlie p00fs.

lessons are what your fat, soft in the head, choccie eclair eating, better homes and gardens reading, life coached, ugly arsed missus wants you to get in the two hours she gives you away from her and your ugly, whinging fat kids on a sunday arvo as a 'gift' and then, has the hide to calls it 'your time', as if she's some couch dwelling, jiggly armed god

give yourself five, no six good punches to the nuts, they been doing your thinking for way too long now. besides from the sounds of it, they're not big enough to be even thinking for themselves, let alone to have guided you into the hole you now call your life

strap on a footy boot, kick that b!tch square in the face and tell her in no uncertain terms that you'll be back when YOU have decided that you've learned to kite by YOURSELF.

then get out there and do it. fnck that trainer kite sh!t, what are you training for? to learn how to use a kite? to learn to learn...? harden up douche bag, trainer kites are just the 'mans' way of squeezing more money out of you and feeding you more fear and self doubt, the very same kind of which you now left behind with a hard footy boot kick to the face, remember?

now i'm sure it was con****ious or one of those other fruits who spent way too long alone by themselves in their dressing gowns, who once said, 'YOU ONLY LEARN FROM YOUR MISTAKES', notice how i wrote that last bit in big letters there boy, thats cause it means i'm shouting it at 'ya, i learned that from one of these other soft p00fs right here on this forum, you know the type, fifteen years old over a hundred posts and still don't own a kite, what a sad state of affairs this g@y place has become, but more about that later for i digress, where was i... oh yeah thats right.

YOU ONLY LEARN FROM YOUR MISTAKES, one more time for your dumb ar$e, YOU ONLY LEARN FROM YOUR MISTAKES. so get out there and learn boy. the only way. the fncking hard way!!!!

i tell you, whats the point of forking out good money for some tosser who thinks his better than you, who treats you like the baby he obviously thinks you are, to hold your hand like a little girl who needs toilet training and show you how its done. you're not a girl are you boy, you can potty by yourself can't you, well stand up and learn like a man.

now, be wary of any fruit who ends their posts with 'see ya and good winds'
these are the same coniving, primary school dwelling in a trench coat, weirdos who'll wanna sucker you in to buying the trainer kite that you're once limp wrists now don't need.
besides, you don't want good winds boy, you want scary winds, b!tch slappin' winds, winds that make the trees scream in fear.

thats when you'll get your pudgy office hiding ar$e out there and learn.
and trust me here sunshine, by the time the local medical emergencies know you by your first name, you, like myself, will be the hardest fncking kiter around, and revered like the god you have become by all, and you'll leave behind these here soft and boring seabreeze fruits, who kite in helmets and impact vests and strap cameras on their heads to show the world how g@y and soft their kiting is... because you my boy, will kite like a man.
