so sitting on a secluded beach in a faraway land after an epic session I started thinking about it. Im not necessarily talking about our "old" 2012 models, but the banged up, heavily-repaired models we all learned on that are now collecting dust in the garage 'cos we are too busy/lazy/not worth selling.
In so many of these faraway, magical places you see in magazines where the beer is cheaper than the bottled water and the $100 a week you spend on your beach shack and all the food you can eat is still about $95 more than most of the locals make in a month. However a handful of the locals have managed to get hold of a few well worn kites and boards and essentially taught themselves the art of kiting, and although we dont necessarily share the same culture or language or food we can all share the stoke. Speaking to some of the local guys they tell me they are desperate for any kiting equipment
My question is are there any organisations or groups donating used kites, boards and harnesses to local groups in places like Fiji, Bali, Mauritius etc?
In Sri Lanka I see that their are some smart locals are recycling old kites by cutting them up and making wallets and purses and bags,Thought it was a great idea ![]()
Only place I have seen them go is to the tight arse newbies who get dragged through the surf or up the beach.
And that would be my only reason not to donate my old kites to a 3rd world as without proper instruction, these people could seriously hurt themselves and not have the medical attention that we enjoy here.
Would love to put a smile on their face from kiting, but I sort of think its like donating an old parachute..... Maybe not so dangerous....
