Repetitive Strain Injury. Both elbows. AKA Golfers elbow. Similar to but not exactly the same as tennis elbow. Too much of a good thing is apparently bad for you after all. Having a rest today.

Anyone know a good fast fix?

Try a webbing strap just below the elbow, I get it most seasons and this definately helps. Holds the tendons tight and they don't inflame as much. Started getting the onset last week, had the strap on for a few sessions and it has calmed down. Also lots of stretching helps.

Surfing since 10, numerous fin chops from feet, legs, arse, and head.Almost broke my neck at gnarloo. Kiteboarding, 2 broken ribs, a board chop to the head, and a slighly torn rotator cuff, from handlepasses (attempted ones anyway), tennis elbow from riding overpowered on the 2006 crossbow. (get the right size kite for the conditions and depower, so your not overstretching the ligaments). And of course, sore nuts when riding fast and losing an edge on a twin tip.
My brother almost drowned, stuck under a dingy that we used to sail, he was 10 and I was 12, I yanked him out from under the boat, and the was a but cut and scratched.
Motorbikes, 6 days in hospital, Skateboarding a broken ankle

But at the end of the day its all worth it., at least were hitting water that sometimes feels like concrete.

Falling flat on the side of your face is painfull to your ear. A wetsuit hoody solves the problem. When kiting in cold weather, with a wetsuit on you lose 80% of the heat through your head. A $35-40 dollar hoody keeps you out for so much longer and is a great investment when its wind chill factor.

Shorten your centerline (chicken loop.) You're stretching for the bar too much.

Cycle your forearms in a tub of warm/hot water then a tub with iced water for around 5 minutes, plus NSAIDs.:D

3x compression fractures to spine (25 yrs of pole boarding), heel laceration to the bone with operation to remove coral/ shell and subsequent infection (2 weeks off work), split left rib cage in half with a bad double back role (another 2 weeks off) which heal out of alignment and now I can't surf anymore due to the lump of bone making it to painfull to paddle on my stomach (last two from kiting the last 6 yrs).

Hey Chris, when did you have it and how did you treat it?

Got mine through misjudging a double overhead in Bali in August - comes good for a while but after 3 or 4 days kiting it's buggered again.

Hoping that someone has a miracle cure - don't want to miss summer

It was caused by bad posture with the shoulders rolling forward and aggravated by poor kiting technique (not trimming properly - poo stance), in the short term a few physio sessions and Voltarin Rapid's, longer term I did specific exercises to strengthen the back and shoulder muscles and sports massages to release the tension across the chest.

So far so good, but I haven't loaded the shoulder for a week solid of kiting yet, looking at the forecast for the next week it will get a good workout.

Edit: it was only 12 months ago.

The first surfing injury i can remember other than loss of nipples (70's wax, balance and survival) was about 30 years ago.... smashed jaw... still clicks to this day.

Various fin chops, many stiches... standouts include almost severed forearm tendon... gash in arse cheek ( doctor laughed as the flesh was ripped, said he'd do the best he could)

Perforated both eardrums (the most painfull injury to date)

Various reef cuts, my wrists look like i've been trying to kill myself for a long time, almost always have a fresh cut on the foot... standout reefcut was bingan '92 didn't stop bleeding all week, still have bone floating around.

Dislocated shoulder, just an pop out then in, but probably took close to 10yrs to feel 100%

Landed on coccyx hard at backdoor pipe

Reef stab to acl, that one sucked

Broken nose

Broken rib (only kite injury)

Left the best till last, over 4 years ago i head butted the reef, got stiched up no worries. Then 6 months ago it started to grow, ultrasound showed 7 bits of rock still in there. Had a op then it started to grow again, had another op last tues fingers crossed he got it all this time

Al, get peter egoscues book "pain free" and do the shoulder and neck exercises. Quick fix would be cortisone injection followed by physio, but may recur.

Hi
Just a word of advice, make sure you get your injury thoroughly checked out.
I damaged my shoulder 18 months ago surfing, quite a lot of bruising under the arm between the armpit and elbow obviously painful but had good movement so didnt think much of it. Treated it with ice packs, anti-inflamatory's etc followed by physio. Basically it was back to 90% okay, but I did the same injury again snowboarding, this time it didnt appear as bad (less pain and no bruising.) I treated it the same but the injury didnt respond as well.
The doctor diagnosed it as bursitis and sent me for an ultrasound to confirm it and suggested a cortisone injection. The first ultrasound found a bursa and no damage. The cortisone is injected using a ultrasound to guide the injection into the bursa. It was during this second ultrasound with a different technician they found a tear to the rotator cuff.
Long story short, the follow up MRI Scan showed a large tear to the rotator cuff, ligament damage and bursitis. I have medical cover and loss of income insurance which is fortunate but the diagnosis is 6 weeks in a sling - no driving, and 6 to 8 months off work. The other issue is if I damage it further they might not be able to operate.
So be careful, get it checked out thoroughly and dont always trust ultrasounds.
