has anyone else experienced shin splints from kiteboarding too much.
last weekend i went out on saturday in 30knts gusting to 35 at rosebud and i was out for about 7 hours
on my 6m switchy 3 (i am 47kgs). while i was out there i was experiencing some pain in my shin's and so took a couple of 5-10 minute rests. i thought nothing of it at the time but when i got home i found out i got it. i am just resting for this week but will be out on fri again.
if anyone else has any more advice that would be great and i was wondering if anyone else has had it from kiting or if you have just had it from running etc.

P.S for those of you who dont know shin splints is usually caused by running and it is when the tendon starts to come off the bone (not too badly), i think thats what it is. if i am wrong tell me.
hey dude shin splints arent really a condition its really just used to describe a problem with your shins. it come from a range of underlying issues. but im surprised you feel it in kite surfing. there isnt that much movement that really should irritate it .. .have you had any other leg injuries ie ankle or knee/
i only got the pain when racing my freind as it was imposible to keep an edge when going really fast so trying to fight that seemed to give me pain right down my shin's. I have a bit of a swolen ankle but that was from sport a few days after. i am 14 so is it unusual to get it before you are fully or does it happen at any age.

i had this disease the last half a year to a year, it sucks super bad . you cant pop off the water properly or lift your legs, its hard to walk up stairs. this disease you usually get from growing and excessive exercise when under the age of 18, i got it and im 21.
i had shin splints further down my shins and then got this in both legs, it started out sore but not to bad, it got alot worse as time went on, there is not much you can do about it.
p.s I had it at its worst when the nats were on luckly
one heat of hard riding and i was out for another couple of weeks. you think its getting better then it just gets worse again.

I have suffered from them for 17 years due to running.
I strongly recommend you see a podiatrist and take your board with you so they can see how your feet/legs align. They will no doubt be able to offer advice on changing your stance to counter the stresses you are placing on your legs.
With running you wear orthodics so tweaking you foot pads may just do the trick for you.

when i used to play tennis a few years ago, im pretty sure i used to suffer from the same condition on occasion after exercise.
It was also pretty cold as we played tennis at night.
I found that using Voltaren was pretty good man, maybe only temporary, but it helps.

I used to get them in my late teens, they suck and I had them so long I never thought they would go away, but as I got older they disappeared.
I also think its got something to do with growing and playing sport.
Don't waste money on physio's (unless your folks are paying)
Keep kiting, you are just going have to live with it untill you've finished growing..
My Cousin does Triathlons and got a stress fracture straight through the bone from running so much....he's had it twice now.
Usually with running, shin splints are caused by flat feet. I always train and usually play footy with arch supports, otherwise it kills.
It might be an idea to put something under your feet to support your arches while boarding. Otherwise, go see a podiatrist or physio.
Yep had shin splints, when i use to wakeboard alot. shins use to hurt, i just figured it was normal .l only realized my shins actually had a problem was when my doc showed me my bone scan after i broke my foot when i binding broke on a heavy landing. was off the water while my foot healed and all came good. dont wakeboard much anymore and never had a probem since.

I only get shin splits every now and then during kiting. I found it was because my wetsuit was riding up my shins and also stretching before going out helped too.
Plus the cold ususlly sets it off a bit, but my wetsuit riding up my shins usually set it off the worst.
I've never had it riding boardies when it is warm.
Yeah I agree with most of the above. Shin spints start as a tightening of the muscles in the lower leg with the calf muscle pulling the bone one way and the muscle on the front pulling the other way. If left or agrivated with exercise etc the condition progresses to stress fractures of the bone and then fracturing proper.
Stretching before and after exercise and also massage to kneed out the knots in the muscle... orthodics is prob a good option too.
I used to get them fairly bad when i was playing footy. Turned out the problem was with my feet, i went to a podiatrist and got orthotics. Cleared it right up.
Stretch your calf muscles for at least one minute each before and after exercise.
Worked for me and it doesn't cost anything.
i used to get bad shin splints from running. I went t a running shop and the videoed my feet whist I ran on a treadmill, it showed that I run with my feet inwards, so they gave me a shoe with high arches.
Ive never had shin splints since.......
I would recommend trying someone elses board, with different foot pads.
I bet you find this makes all the difference.
