Wondering if anybody has kited on the mud island in port Phillip bay...??

Before you start whining....I only intent to leave footprints.

Looking for best landing spots (boat landing, not kite)
Launch area (kite launch)
Best flat section and wave section.
Intrigued of anybody else who's gone on the mission..... Surely somebody, right??

Cheers

It's a bird sanctuary for nesting sea birds... Parks Victoria monitor it regularly.
And it stinks I think it's more bird sh1t than sand

For boat acces the north eastern/ eastern side is best.... Ie you can get closer ....almost every other approach is knee to ankle deep for 100-300m.
Watch out for stingrays.

+1 for smell. I think there are better spots to go with less effort. If you include boatride, interloch is probably closer

Mud Island or at least some sandbars just off it are pretty sweet for kiting.
But we have been just asked to remove our Mud Island Kitesurfing trips from our website by Parks Victoria.
They had a whole list of reasons one of which was that our parks permit only included the waters of Port Phillip bay. (not sure then where Mud Island is then)
and that Mud Island was not a designated Kitsurfing area. (again not sure of the implications of this statement as it seems to allude to there only being designated areas we can kite in.)

Now this may only relate to us as a commercial operation. Or it could have something to do with that this Parks email came just 2 days after we protested to the Victorian Tourism Minister about how the Federal Tourism minister(and Liberal Senator for Tasmania) manages to get grant monies allocated to Victoria given to a Tasmanian company to come in and set up an eco boat tour operation in direct conflict with our 3 year old operation. without us even getting the hint of a chance to provide the same service. Rant over you can read more about that here www.facebook.com/3Inlets-Windsports-1407344329565514/

anyway it does seem that Mud Island according to Parks Vic. is not a Kitesurfing location.

Edit Parks stated.
Mud Islands is an internationally recognised bird breeding site;it is not a designated wind sports area;boats are not allowed to travel faster than 5kts within 200m of the shoreline; and it is a protected area within a Marine National Park.

Its quite a long boat trip to get there and some strong rip currents in the proximity. I know someone who had a scary float then rescue on a konked out jetski near Mud Island. Taking into account massive numbers of stingrays and the nesting birds, there are far better (and easier) places to kitesurf.
