if its a line mount you want to use, there is also the other one which is compatible with all models (bought it from kitepower - no affiliation). Im using it with my hero 3

Hero 2 is definitely worth considering if you want to spend less, you will still get good results. I just went the 3 because its smaller and lighter.

Only took it out the other day (xmas pressie) for the first time on a tiny swell. Heres a pic

Ah sweet, wasn't aware of that one, do you know what the brand is?

GoPro2, will do everything you want and they are now selling for awesome prices too. I think we have them on special for $299 (were $399)

The line mount is the camrig brand and the GP3 still fits it. The fin mount will not fit the GP3 housing, but Camrig have one coming soon.

Ah must be the old cam rig mount. Sorry I was a bit confused after reading this thread (kiteforum.com/viewtopic.php?p=774414) on their new mount to stop camera shaking.

Does the Camrig strut mount fit the GP3?

Buy a Contour instead - I had a go pro but it did nothing but fog up no matter what I did to it. I use mine in the water all the time and its good for underwater to a metre for about half an hour. You can get all the same kite mounts as the go pro. im much happier with the basic head strap for it - I just tie it to my wetsuit zip cord just in case - comfy as :)

Sorry to hijack the thread but can you still use a centre line flagging safety system when you have the line mount attached?

I was recently faced with the same decision and went with a hero 2, same vid quality as 3 base model but a fair bit cheaper. It's a bit bigger but not noticeably on a kite mount.

I'm not impressed with the hero2 video quality at times. In hind sight I should have gone a 3 black, not for size/weight just for the better fps at quality res (1080p60 / 720p120). Kiting is usually no worries but moto riding through tree's on a sunny day can make an epileptic video with the shadows/low fps..

I've found 960p (1280x960, 48FPS + 30FPS) is best for my watching from the hero2.

Anyone worked out a way to mount the GoPro to a 5 line Kite yet?

Nice pic mate, was just wondering if the flag out still works on the ozone bar if needed. I've always been led to believe not, would love to hear otherwise

Both the GoPro's and the Contours are good cameras and both have their uses, I find the Contour's better for kiting though.
The GoPro's have a fairly large front aspect whilst the Contours are a bit more streamlined. When mounting on a helmet there is a lot less hanging off you with a contour especially with the Roam 2's which dont need a case for the water.

Video wise I think they are both the same. If you go for a Contour + / +2 you get the added benefit of GPS which can be interesting to look at after a kiting session - means you cant go bragging about a 35 m jump though as the GPS will show that it was really a 3m :)

The Contour software is also pretty good for downloading and managing your videos and makes it all pretty easy. Contour have mounts for pretty much every use - helmet, board, wrist, bar, bike, car etc except the line mount which you can get from camrig as well.

The Roam 2's are going for about $245 at the moment which is pretty damned hard to beat!

Just to clarify, I dont sell either of these cameras, I am not sponsored by either of them, yes I have used both of them not just kiting but on motorbikes, cars, mountain bikes, snorkelling etc and after all that just find the Contour is better for this application - the GoPro's are great for cars where the larger frontal profile isn't as much of an issue or works better on dash's etc.

Either way, you cant go wrong :)

the mount is still free to run up and down the lines, I kept having to push it up to get the camera further away as it kept sliding down to the stopper ball you see in the foreground.. so I reckon the flag out could still work but not 100% on that one.. probably depends a bit on the situation

one thing is with this line mount, you dont really want to be putting your kite down, especially in the surf. The mount and camera certainly add an extra item for lines to wrap around/tangle on and therefore lose ability to control your kite/depower etc. I had trouble just launching at first as my lines got caught with the camera. In the end I had my gf connect the setup after I had launched. As I self launch 99% of the time I dont use very often (ive still only used once).. tether launch would probably work ok, where you can check all your lines prior to actual launch.

Some other users may have some tips with this mount.. ?

I didnt do any loops either as they may see your lines getting caught in the setup (?).

so if your going to use this mount you have to be aware of its safety implications and ride/fly kite appropriately

I use mine in the waves all the time and only had tangles on perhaps 1/20 stacks, if it is a major one. With the stabilizer I built it just pops back up and is fine almost every time. The carbon rod bends while looping and pops back, the velcro sleeve helps keep the lines away from tangles

BUT !!!! (DISCLAIMER) use it at your own peril - as it has been discussed well, it is a modification and not without risk. If you are going to add possible edges and ridges to lines you are going to increase the chances of a tangle.

For me so far so good, so I'm happy with it - My mod is on the album posted below:
