looking at planning a trip away come summer time.Flinders Island is sparking my interest.

Has anybody gone kiting there?
any info?
any experience ?
any locals?

yes... i know there are plenty of cheaper getaways and far more easily accessed places......
but it looks interesting and it's always sh**hot wind!!

any info is appreciated.

If camping maybe try Cape Portland on north east tip of tassie. That's got some nice camping spots very close to beach.
But on Flinders maybe try the Polenda area. A local pro fisherman made reference to a bay near there that he thought I should try.
He could have been trying to get rid of me as well.

Gidday, i spent 2 months on Cape Barron Island 2 Christmas's ago. Cape Barron is only a stones throw from Flinders. The whole area is truely amazing, a vertually untouched wonderland of fishing, diving, snorkling, swimming and stacks of wind, i mean stacks. I never got over to Flinders, but it is really big with a huge mountain range and endless amount of beaches with pretty much nobody on them. So i can tell you about Cape Barren and you can take it from there. Water temp about 17 - 18c in summer , crystal clear water. Amazing beaches, with white sand and blue clear water and not a single person to be seen....very similar vistas to wilsons prom area with orange lycon covered granate rocks. One thing i do know of Flinders is that you will have to organise a car of some sorts if you want to see the place and get to the beaches and areas that will be right for the wind and waves....i also took a paddle board with me and highly recomend getting one over there...they are great for touring around on the areas out of the wind and on the odd day...days without wind i paddled to some of the other islands and spent a day and sometimes camped over night on them. This was an absolutely unforgettable experience. One massive bit of advice for kiting and paddling...keep a very close eye on tide times and the weather..the weather can change very very quickly and because of all the island ine area so close to each other the water moves a very fast pace in areas...so if you where to by bad luck break something, in no time at all you can be swept away incredible fast and unless you're lucky enough to have someone watching you or by some chance some of the locals see you in trouble there isn't any help at all...which was always on my mind as i was the only one on cape baron with kites and paddle boards. Over all its one of the most mind blowing trips ive ever done...truely beautiful , really remote, incredible people( Cape Barron is one of the most remote, isolated aboriginal communities in Oz beca'use of its location and how you can get to it)..take a camera and video for sure, you wont regret the decision if you make the effort. Oh yeah, theres a bloke named Frank that flys from Yarram in Gippsland...hes a top bloke and goes out of his way to be super helpful with everything and it only takes 40mins from there direct and he will give you a awesome flight over and low on all the island out there. cheers Pete.
