I ride a 6'2 fish. The board has FCS fins in a thruster set up; the little plastic dodgy ones it came with. I want to get better fins, but the sheer range is overwhelming.
I am mainly riding it strapped, although am experimenting with unstrapped, and ultimately that's where I want to be at.
Conditions vary, but usually cross on, head high
How do I choose the right fins?
If you go to the FCS website
www.surffcs.com/
there's a short bio on each fin. There's a mass to choose from. This may help you choose the right fins for your style of riding and local conditions. Or have a look at the fins on production kite surfboards in your local kite shop or specific board web site that may help.
Fins are expensive so it pays to do some research. Will any of your mates let you try their fins?
Ok heres my view on fins - everyones different...
Go big - always get the large sizes - we use fins for grip all the time, with the odd turn thrown in, surfers use fins for lots of turns and a bit of grip when gunning it down the line...
Go stiff - we also put more pressure on fins than surfers, so getting soft fins = mushy boards
Get a set with the inside foil technology - we ride faster, and fins with a flat inside tend to slip out easier - when they have the foil they hold onto a bottom turn a lot better.
I find fish boards work very well with a smaller trailing fin - FCS let you buy fins individually for a little more, so get the Large size for your front fins, and buy the medium for the back if they'll let you do it - depends on the retailer.
If i was to pick the fins for you - i'd go for the PC-7, unless your under 60kgs, then choose PC-5's.. But then what on earth are you doing on a 6'2" lol... The PC-7's are big fins, quite stiff, and have that inside foil - plus they look the goods ![]()
Remember there are other options to fit the FCS system that aren't made by FCS - Check out the KinetiK Racing brand, expensive but great fins...
I replaced some plastic fins from a cheap NSP surfboard with glass FCS fins.
From memory they were the largest thruster fins similar to the PG 7 model.
I've got epoxy fins on my SST but at my level I can't tell the difference so go cheap with glass.
The cheapest way to buy them is either ebay or your local friendly surf shop might have some used ones in their bargain bin.
If you want fins that bite go for a fuller, swept back fin like the Rusty signature fin.
If you want really loose feel, look at something like the "foil" fins.
Nah go PC-7... The actual height difference isn't gonna help you that much on sand bars... at 80kg's you're right in the sweet spot for those :D
surely there is a shop within cooee?otherwise start one!! most surfboard shops have sets of demonstrator FCS fins so if you are known to the local guys they normally can give you a set to try or if you stump up for a set of fins they will let you try a few of the demonstrator fins until you find the model you like and then supply you with new set of the preferred choice!! i use the same boards to surf with that i kite with so i normally get sorted with fin choice for surfing and run with that...although i only ride unstrapped on epoxy boards(6'4 and 6'6) a rough rule is that if you find you don't have enough drive then you can increase the base size of the fin(which normally translates to a larger depth and less rake or curve but not always) and as the other guys have said use a stiffer fin material fiberglass etc your back foot postition can be pretty critical as most thrusters don't perform very well if you foot is too far forward when on the waves (benefit of being unstrapped is you can tack out using a bit more edge then move your back foot back when on a wave) the other site to try is shapers.com.au/ or ebay when you know what you want . i dont fiddle too much with fin setups any more as it had a tendency to drive you absolutely F*%$ing crazy ........good luck
hey taz, you are not going to get the right fin here, dudes maybe trying to help out and suggesting certain brands and sizes which is great , but untill you try them all for yourself on your fish you will never know, all boards are different (besides pop-outs) even pop outs will change over time as they get waterlogged, your style will be different, you might only like smaller fat waves, or big juicey waves, or 6ft heavers?? you fat or skinny? man, too much to work out here? my suggestion is if it aint broke dont phuk wid it, get used to the board with the fins as is and adapt, we all have to adapt to different boards as they perish and we replace them, fins are another extension of this., unless you feel that you have really conquered that board and in the need for super radical manouvers or speed then keep it simple, save some coin and dont let it do your head in.. long live little plastic dodgy ones...
Up until I snapped it recently I was using a 6'2" Pat Rawson which came with cheap plastic futures fins and I found that every other fin that I tried, Vectors , Black Stix, YU's, (to many shallow reefs
) were all heaps better than the original plastic fins.
My new boards have FCS but I can't really comment or recommend anything as I haven't experimented and they both seem to have fairly decent fins (PC -5's on the Firewire and whatever are the standards on a Converse).
What I am wondering though is are there any sets of FCS fins that have the smaller hatchet type rear fin that some of the vector series Futures have (from memory VF(452) 3/2/1's.... what a mouthful), I loved that set up on my old board.
Mind you it might have had more to do with the weird foil on the front fins than the funny shaped rear fin.
Thanks heaps for the suggestions guys. I really love the way seabreeze users are happy to share their experience.
Will probably go with Rhys's advice
