Hey guys,
I hope anyone can help me.
I`m searching the Customs duty percentage for an Import.
Why?
My flight goes on 1st. Septemer to Australia and my orderd 2014 kitestuff will be delivered at the earliest 5th September at my home in Germany. Now I called the shop and he has no problem to send it to Australia but I have to pay the TAX. I searched on google but I don`t know which is correct and how high is it ?
THX for help.
Hope to see you on the water ;-)
as wheels said above if you get your supplier to separate the order and as long as each package has a declared value of less than A $1000 then there is no tax to pay
even if it costs a little more in postage you will bee saving heaps on import tax
all the info can be found at this site
www.homeaffairs.gov.au/
scroll down to the heading >>>>> Goods with a declared or assessed value not exceeding A$1,000
Locke dont forget to claim the tax back when you buy your kite. Not sure how it works in Germany but in the UK its 20%. Some shops can sell it GST free if they are export it directly. If not claim it back yourself.
The above information is all good.... If the declared valued of an item/package is below $1000 AUD no tax (GST) is payable. If the declared value of an item/package is above $1000 then 10% GST is (currently) required on the entire amount. GST on an item/ package valued at $999 would be zero. GST on an item/ package valued at $1001 would be $100.10. There has been a lot of discussion from various agencies over the last couple of years about changing the value threshold to lower amount. I wonder if that is an item on Abbotts tax review table. In the UK goods being sent beyond the EU are exempt from 20% VAT which is their version of our GST. I also have no idea about Germany.

Wow!!!! Actual accurate Facts on seabreeze !
Locke, are you here temporarily or permanently?
Permanently - You can argue that your kite gear is personal effects. You don't pay import duty on personal effects, unless it is a car (there is an exemption if you have owned the car for a year or more) or alcohol. Jujst make sure the gear isn't sent in it's original packaging.
Temporarily - (less than 60 days) you can claim the GST back on items over the value of $300 in the previous 60 days - as long as you carry it on the plane with you - I have done this for kites, cameras and even a tailored suit!
Hey lostinlondon,
Howd you go about claiming the purchase from customs during departure? From what I know, I need to show them the tax invoice which states the GST paid, Australian business number for the retailer, etc. If I was to buy some goods overseas, do I need to show the invoice from the overseas shop? Or should I use the receipt from what I paid to the customs when the goods arrive? Thanks!
Also what you have to be a bit carefull of is if the package is valued at $999 on the paperwork customs may deem the package worth more if they suspect a lower price on the package than its actually worth.
Also if they see a "few" items come through they may charge gst on some of them as they deem you to be separating the consignment to avoid GST but thats normally on commercial quantities of things.
They have seen the gst dodge tricks over and over and look for it actively.
Thank you guys,
I will be Temporarily in Australia, such 11,5 months ;-) I do a Surf and Travel year (not work and travel ;-) )
@ lostinlondon
It comes in the normal bags
It will be three new Cabrinha Drifter with 2 Bars.
So I thought I will need three package:
First- 11m?
second 9m? + Bar
Third 7m? + Bar
The shop doesnt pay the german GST(TAX back). Juicerider you mean this ?
each one comes with supportprocent and without Tax = under 1000$
If the three package will send with the same name on the same day, will this be a problem?

Yes that is rite the German GST
The idea is that you should not be paying German Tax, as it is exported to Oz cos you are up for Oz Tax. However if each package is less than $1000 you are exempt the Oz tax cos it costs more in paperwork for Oz than they collect. As long as each package is less than $1000 should be OK. Does not matter if you are permanent resident or not.
Sounds like you have got a great trip planed, and you will be have a fantastic time.
You guys are forgetting the one thing where this guy will be caught out!
YOU MUST ADD THE FREIGHT COSTS AS WELL!!
I built a race bike and had the parts come from England and if your parts are under a $1000 good but you also have to take into account freight as well so if the freight is say $60.00 you need to keep item under $940 flyinglocke!!
now I?m worried ![]()

so what cost comes to me if my parcels are under 1000AUD, what they are !
approximately Prices ot the goods in the Parcels:
1: 816AUD$
2: 860AUD$
3: 700AUD$
Freight costs of each parcel is 60? ~ 86AUD$
Which fees and tax will I have?
Is the processing fee for each parcel under and about of 1000AUD$ ?
Thx for help ![]()
If the goods in each parcel are valued at less than $1000 you are exempt GST and Duty. If they are more, you pay Duty on the value of the goods and GST on the goods and GST on the freight plus pay a processing fee. It should not be much more than the GST you claimed back when you exported it from the EU. Kites are still way cheeper there, so you will still be ahead.

As I understand it you are are bringing some kites with you from Germany. If this is correct then all your gear is for customs purposes personal effects, not new and not for the purpose of reselling . No Gst is payable. Even if the gear has never been used it now has had 1 owner(you) so it is now classified as second hand/ used. If your not bringing the gear with you and it will be couriered or mailed from Germany just get the seller to pull off the tags and receipts and mark the value on the declaration sticker that is stuck to the outside of the package at about $500 Aud or there abouts. If he wont do that just get a friend to do it.

Yes you have to add the shipping cost into the value of goods and have that value under $1000. Then you will be exempt from the Duty. I run a Freight forwarding business for people shopping in the states and have this issue all the time. Just have the supplier declare the value plus shipping under $1000 but as close to the mark as possible for two reasons:
1. the customs guys do know the value of goods so they may ask for receipts.
2. if the package is lost you can only claim insurance on what you have declared.
Hey mates buddys and guys ;-)
Thank you very much for all the information and your troubles !!!
I will send my Shop all these Information and hope that it works.
All parcel are cheaper with shipping than 1000AUD$!

1. 996AUD
2. 930AUD
3. 900AUD
maybe a 4th one with 820AUD.
All to the same adress but different names.
hopefully it works !

This is absolutely the case. I just bought a new kite while on vacation from an NZ dealer. He has shipped them to me and my duty was zero as it is for personal use only and I am the owner. You only have to pay duty, VAT etc...if the item is intended for resale in the country you are shipping it to.
Hi Flyinglocke, I dont think you will get away with it, as Australian Customs will have a record of all 4 shipments. Technicaly the best thing to do is pay Australian Customs and GST and import tax. Talk to your shop, he can give you the German Mehr Wert Steuer back if the item is exported. wich will result in about the same price.
There is definitely an exemption for personal effects. I brought well over a $1000 worth of stuff when I moved back to Melbourne from the UK and the only thing I paid duty on was a few bottles of alcohol I had in the shipment.

The issue is that the items are new - used personal effects are not the issue
Ok. Thanks for all.
I will do it all in one parcel, the goods will have a complete price (with 100aud shipping) 2700AUD. So I have 20% of all and a small extra charge.
These are maybe 600aud, I am right?
