hey guys
im interested in travelling around australian coasts for a time and im wondering if someone who has done it can tell me a few things i.e how much its roughly gonna cost me...im keen to here how much people have spent on a whole trip and stuff...an yeah just generally peoples experiences obivously im looking to go to good kiting spots so if anyone knows any secret spots i should check out let me know
I did a 6 month trip in my motorhome travelling from Cairns to Melbourne finishing up about a month ago. Best time of my life, but timing is everything. I copped rain for the first thirty days because of a la nina pattern, so missed all the great spots from Cairns - Bundaberg. Then, of course heading into winter the further south I got was not the best.
Too many good spots to mention, but the Sunshine Coast, NSW south Coast and north coast were the places I found the best combination of wind and waves.
If you're staying in caravan parks, the average is $30 per night for a powered site, and there are plenty close enough to the beach that you shouldn't have to drive anywhere for a kite.
Google earth is your best friend on the road when it comes to scoping out new sites. Searching seabreeze with the place name will also yield really good info and give you an idea as to who the local riders are. I think I would have kited twice as much as I did if I was travelling with someone else who kited. There were way too many times when I erred on the side of caution because I wasn't sure about local conditions.
I was "cruising" from Sydney to Perth, best spot Gnarloo.

I travelled around Austrailia for 22 months with my GF 3 years ago, was the best time of my life. The only problem was i didn't kite then. Bummer. Would have been awsome if i did, probably would still be travelling. I did it in a troopy and and towed a camper trailer, had a boat and solar panels. I could stay at a spot for ever and not worry about having warm beers (running out was always a problem). The west coast is the best as you can basically just pull up anywhere on the beach and camp for free. All i can say is do it and do it in a 4X4 if you decide on a van or kombi you will be very limited.
cheers for the replys guys...i dont really have an aloted time for this trip or a exact route...so im prob gonna be looking for work along the way you kno to keep the food in me guts and the petrol in the car to get to the next spot...i was thinking fruit picking or something...people need labours for that in summer yea?
Hi Sladey,
I have done the trip around most of oz starting in Cooktown and finishing in Geraldton but have been as far north as Exmouth in the west too. Took us a year. Good fun, plenty of adventures
and misadventures.![]()
There is a guide you can get that the grey army and backpackers tend to have, can't remember its name, it lists all of the fruits and harvesting times etc for the whole country. Nite packing Coles and Woolies etc is good too.
Cheers,![]()
We did it years ago sladey with a 4x4 & van, took 6 years, work holiday work holiday etc. Absolutely loved it, made some very good life long friends. Now we dream of retirement and doing it again.
I see you're 20, my wife & I were 18 & 21 when we took off ![]()
The only advise I'll give you junior is just do it, work it out as you go ![]()
When you're in Cairns say hi to the old bastard with the windsurfer ![]()
