Yesterday was an interesting day on the water! the surf life savers were chasing down kiters between floreat and the drain pipe following them on their 4wheel bike with sirens on and all. they looked fairly pissed at people coming in within 5 mtr of the shore, i guess they were worried about australia day swimmers.
had a chat to them as i was setting up and they were pretty angry at us and he knew nothing re our new zoning for those downwinders.
anyway i think it was a once of being australia day and all. the biggest woory though was a loose kite at scarborough, after the owners leach gave way. the surf patrol boat with 2 teenagers a girl and a guy were trying to retrieve the kite. the girl was just jumping out of the dinghy and grabbing the kite by the bar, another fellow kiter was trying to grab it also. when i saw it was getting close to the scarb flags i grabbed the kite and brought to shore with lines still attached through swimmers and all
, the beach was so packed so glad i didnt drop my kite and or let the runaway kite and bars go through the crowd..
Well Done,
Maybe a chat between WAKSA and WA surf life saving may be a pro active follow up to a busy Australia Day. A clash between good wind and a good weather public holiday.....
I had my first kite at scabs (brighton end) in 8 years - kept going south until no people, launched - kited with one other bloke.
I then watched this armada of kites, like a swarm of wasps, sweep down the coast and pass me.
Was amazing to watch and shocked the hell out of me - having kited 8 year ago no more than 3 to 4 other people in total up and down coast!
I thought most crew kited responsibly, didn't see any issues - except when quite a few landed I beleive they should have been a little further south as the beach was unusually crowded by swimmers - and unbelievable babes...I gotta get out more -I'm still recovering!
Harry you are always causing trouble mate.......
Only kidding,
hey Harry when I'm doing down winders the clubbies always give me the thumbs up, us strapped kiters, are, it's proven ........ safer for beach goers and family groups on beachers. ![]()
Nice work Harry.
I did the run from Swanny to brighton around 4-6PM and didn't see any hassle from the clubbies tho?
Although all the way from North Swanny up to City Beach, I had a 4wd with clubbies trawling along the beach following the same pace as I. Wondered if they wanted to signal something, but they seemed interested in something else - not sure what tho?
Cranking breeze yesterdee, a great sesh, some awesome white pointers frolicking in swanny surf and that absolutely stuffed - but good - feeling as packing up while the sun slips away.![]()
Good to be alive in Oz!![]()
BTW - picked up a Pat love seat harness left behind at Brighton shower. Have posted in L+F - but anyone know who's butt it belongs to? Small bloke or standard lady I'd estimate.
Thanks for doing your bit Harry!
For all: Please see also this post for updated guidelines.

The Scarborough Kiters Beach User Group and WAKSA will be contacting the clubbies shortly. Noted: Some workshops on how to rescue kites may be needed.
Many thanks to all who take the time and make the effort to correct and inform anyone about kiting safely and in harmony with other beach users. ![]()
Shan.
I'm surprised that the lifeguards aren't taught how to deal with kites. Some basic lessons on landing , launching and pulling a kite out of the ocean is surely required knowledge for these guys these days. I asked a guy once if they were taught this stuff and he said No they weren't.
Be nice to see them get out of their a/c 4wds for once and get them to grab my kite before the waves turn it inside out and tie it in a knot!
