first yes i've searched the forum for this so have a fair understanding but just after a little clarification...
after being into any and every kite store i have come across in Perth, i am still confused as to what size board to go.
around the 140 mark has been the general response, but if i get this right, is it basically bigger x wider = easier to learn on and then get a smaller one when i get the hang of things?
74kg and have surfing experience & a bit of skatie experience, looking to go with a 9 - 12 m kite.
cheers
Drew
If you're keen and have some boardsports background, grab something second hand about 138X41 that's billed as a freeride board. You should be able to get something less than three years old for $300- $400 to learn on. Then keep it as a spare/lightwind board or sell it to the next noob.
It will take a while after that to work out what style of board you like but any modern freeride board is a good start.
Do not buy a dedicated freestyle board. You want something tamer to begin with.
If you have a surfing background then grab a surfboard in the 5'10 - 6ft range (whatever condition), go strapless, wait for some wind, head to the beach, and feel the love, you will be a happy chappy..
Have you had lessons?
If you had you would have a good understanding on what size board would suit you. The instructor would be able to tell if you will pick it up quickly or weather you would benefit from a learner board.
If you haven't had lessons get some before you even start looking at buying gear, you could get the wrong stuff and waste a lot of money. Check out what gear people are using in your are and what local support you can get, because if you do run in to trouble latter it would be good to have people around that can help you out.
You may find a freeride board around 134 may be good if you are picking things up quickly. Alternately some shops hire boards so you can get a big board and when you progress you trade it for something smaller. If you do want a big board to start with no matter what get a second hand board.![]()
thanks so much guys, god bless seabreeze ey!
waxman, lessons are booked just starting to look into gear so i can get my head around what i am expecting to have to pay.
