my mother has a house over looking the river mouth(which she does rent out by the way, think beer on couch whilst watching people kite, type thing![]()
)and has told me there are plans to dig the sandbar back to try and fix some of the environmental problems that beautiful river is facing.only problem is in do so it could wreck one of the best flat water spots in the south
is there anyone out there who can tell me if they have heard anything about this.
Yep, I recently heard exactly the same thing from someone who's folks live there, I don't know how true it is or what the time frame for this might be, I will see if I can get some more info.
I think the plan may be to cut a new opening through back near the carpark where most people now launch (but I know absolutely nothing about it except hearsay so it could be a complete rumour).
It would be a damn shame if this happens, I'm not sure how much it might stuff up the set up for kiting, but I'm pretty sure it wouldn't be a good move for us.
It is amazing how far East the river mouth has moved in recent years though.
yeah if they do put channel through where you say it may not have too much of an effect on the flat stuff.fingers crossed.i guess a call to the margs/augusta council could shed some light.your rite about the mouths position it has moved east a lot and it getting real narrow.im guessing due to last bunch of years low rainfall, but then again im no environmental scientist,so basically im just making s**t up
you on nightshift mate??
Nuh mate worked last night, got a few days off now, just have a look at the graph and you will see when I am due back at work. ![]()
P.S. you know who was tellin me about Augusta don't ya Staunchy
, perhaps we should have a few beers at your Mums place and see if we can come up with a solution, might have to have a kite aswell, just to have a closer look at the problem.
yes mate i do believe a research trip for the good of the w.a. kite community should be done.we go for test ride and then nut out the big issues over some of those said beers,im willing to sacrifice my time and money for the greater good![]()
will let you know soon....

"The rivermouth has moved 2km east of the Colour Patch, raising concern about the estuary's water quality and flood risk.
The rivermouth has been moving to the east for many years, noticeably in the mid-1920s and late-1970s, creating a sand spit to the east of Dukes Head.
In March 1945 it became blocked, possibly due to the low tidal exchange combined with onshore sand movement.
Winter river flows were trapped and the river level rose up to 2m, causing flooding.
Three local men used a horse-drawn scoop and shovels to cut a channel and clear the sand spit, returning the mouth to its historical position."
"The westerly location was chosen as the most likely to provide the longest time before intervention is needed again, and the greatest short term gains in water quality in the lower estuary."
just got back from the "gutta" tday, spent last week down there and it been front page news ,spoke to everyone from pro ab fishos to general locals and EVERYONE got diff view.no budget been sorted for the works yet.sounds like it guna happen, for me i think it gota happen.whats going on with the mouth seems to be not human doing(depending on what you think about lack of rain and the reason for that)but part of the prob is the run off from the diff types of ag goin on up stream from there,as to why the water is going to ****e.spoke to local fisho crew and they were talking bout getting out and putting a cut in BY HAND.thats how much they think it got to happen !!!even if any of it happens us kite crew will prob be left with a island which will leave us butter water anyway![]()

This is probably just the first stage in the bigger plan to build a marina in the hardy inlet (which of course would be useless without clear and reliable deep water access) !!
Do what you want, I don't think anything will stop it - they call this progress !
Shame of it is, I can see boaties wanting to ban kites as a navigational hazard once the cut's in and the boating population starts to multiply :(
The preferred location for the marina is at flat rocks.
About half way between the rivermouth and the lighthouse.
There is also a proposal for an abalone farm down that way and a new marine housing development.
However things dont happen to quickly down here and I think it will be a long way of.
But the mouth really does need to be cut open soon, the river is a festering mess and the fish have moved on.
tds note where that rifle is pointed.close to my eye you rekon.started shooting at north sydney rifle range if really gota know, bout 10 years ago.changed my foto once and it was for peeps like you, and it aint going to happen again.you must be bored as or not getting enough action with your own "rifle"!!!!!!![]()
