have this in both wrists and wondering if anyone has had the surgery for it, its a small operation separating the two tendons from the wrist to the thumb that grind on each other causing a lot of pain, one good thing its not arthritis which i thought 3 mths ago.
Hi,
Haven't had surgery but close. My story...
When my youngest son was about 18 months old, he dived off the bed. I was half asleep but reflex grabbed him. It was dark but must have just saved him from hitting the floor. I stressed tendons in my thumb and was diagnosed with DQ. Had a few visits to physio including having custom braces built. Did not get better. Referred to a specialist who gave me a cortisone injection. Three days later back to normal. That was about 18months ago now.havent looked back....I was told that if pain returned that he would try one more cortisone injection before surgery.
Was a cortisone injection an option?
Si
I have had wrist twinges kiting that have recently stopped recovering and now day to day activities aggravate it. Should listen to my body earlier I guess and I wouldn't have the problem now.
Looking at the internet it might be ECU tendonitis. Different tendon probably from yours but thought to throw it in the discussion.
Now finally admitting tp myself there is a problem, I have started to take the pressure off using a wrist brace. Seems to be effective getting rid of the pain and twinges in day to day activities. Hoping that this will shake it over time. Going to try kiting with the brace on this weekend. Can't bear the idea of no kiting for many weeks.
It reminds of an experience years ago when i had a tennis elbow from rock climbing. I tried different treatments. I got some temporary relief but none gave a permanent solution. Then found a strap and when adjusted quite tight could take the pressure off even doing quite strenuous activities. That is what solved it for me over time despite virtually never stopping climbing activity. Maybe not text book advice but it worked for me. I am trying something similar with the tendonitis. Fingers crossed it works. Might give an update in a few weeks time whether the outcome is good or bad.
kite addicted, was told not to have the cortisone and referred to a specialist which i'm on a waiting list for 6 mths not having private insurance. had it since march was given some anti inflammatorys first which was good but still had the pain. then a month later had an ultra sound came back with DQ and thus the referral. can't do anything till dec as i'm off to brazil in 2 wks kiting for 5 mths so will strap them and take anti inflammatarys when it kills me. they'll prob kill me if anything. no good its gone to my right wrist now but not as bad. maybe i'll get the cortisone before i go just to get some relief for 6/8 wks. thanks all for the input, cheers

... do like the rest of us,,,,, go to the nearest chemist, take some pills and ignore the "de Quervains tendonitus syndrome",,,,, but then again, maybe don't 'cause it can only get worse,,,,, ignore me!!!!
ps leave the phone in ya car,,,,,, no more texting,,,,, unless its windy then let it rip!
If you wanted to try something a little different, you could try glucose injections.
It works by injecting glucose into in painful spot. then it irritates your tendons and mussels, so your body pumps loads of extra heeling blood to the area to flush it out. But all that extra blood heels everything in the process.
its worth a shot!
Quervains tendonitis syndrome - Yep, been there done that. Instant fix with simple surgery. Asked the doc why it happens and he said there was no common cause. This was about 2 years back and it has never reoccured. Noticed it most when winding winches on my boat. The most pain felt was when I nearly punched out the Doc when he performed his little test to confirm his prognosis.
I got the impression from the Doc that if left untreated the tendon would continue to deteriorate and fail. Sometimes you have to go to the repair shop instead of snake oil or drugs.
Have you tried tendon gliding? and Massaging of the tendon sheath whilst doing the radial deviation movements? Dry needling?
