welcome any ideas for somewhere new to live for a while - into kiting and surfing and family - 2 school kids.
Have lived in Perth, Sydney and southern Gold Coast, but most of the time in NZ.
perth was crap in winter and no surf - too hot in peak summer, sydney was fun but not generally for board riding, southern goldie was sick surfing, average kiting. NZ is epic but winter suck balls these days (wetsuit hoods/ never used to phase me tho..)
Thinking sunshine coast but seems jobs like rocking horse **** (got a friend that moved to noosa likes it..) , Brisbane would prob drive me crazy..
Yamba looks awesome, quite like Merimbula - too cold in winter tho... love northern NSW surfing , not so much the wildlife, and crap kiting.
Quite like Melbourne good missions to places like Inverloch cold tho...
Lucky life choices right now. Just thinking there is somewhere I am overlooking. Somewhere with a fun kiting scene? - if they exist any more...

I moved to the Sunny Coast from Perth.
Great place to live. Homes are cheaper but there is humidity here! That's not so great.
Never get the 30 knot days like I did in Perth, however I kite just as often, and the surf here is on par with Lancelin.
But make sure you have a job first, I was fortunate by getting a transfer from Perth to Brissy, then happened to score a job in Noosa.
Sunshine Coast to Brissy is terrible, the roads are slow for 70kms and the trains only travel 50kms an hour and stop every 2 minutes.
I was working in Eagle Farm for an engagement, and public transport was taking me 4 hours return a day.
Given that you are from New Zealand I would probably recommend that you stay there.
Go and live in manchester or liverpool
then return home and youll realise you spoilt and youll appreciate what youve got,and on your return youd of noticed they eat sheep not root them

Sunny Coast - took us about 2-3 years of looking/commuting to bris/working crap local jobs to find good local jobs. So if you don't move with a job or a business, you need to budget about that time to settle in..
Now we earn just about enough between us to live decently & pay the mortgage on a house wedged between river & beach. I won't be moving till I'm dead.

Seriously though Ian, if you are coming from Sydney or Melbourne you can buy a primo position on the sunny coast and have enough left over to live off for a few years while you settle in. Prices are relatively decent but going up.. I reckon our place has put on 20% in 3.5 years and that pace will increase even if the capitals falter.
You have to consider that the development is through the roof around here: New multi-billion dollar public teaching hospital & private hospital & medical precinct opening, light rail going in from maroochydore to caloundra, whole new maroochydore CBD under construction, Airport 2nd runway & double flights over next few years, 30,000 houses going in to Aura (caloundra south) over the next 30 years - road in opened yesterday and they're selling out releases so far, another 10,000 houses at palmview and 20,000 at Beerwah east, rail line from Beerwah to Maroochydore within 15 years... Undersea internet backbone cable coming to Maroochydore, so much development going on it's insane.
Basically you can't go wrong investing in decent beach-side property here, as all the ticky tacky boxes to the south, plus all the doctors coming to fill Kawana, will push up prices of the good property..

Please zip it Dave, the only thing you havn't blabbed about is the uncrowded kiting - surf was epic today btw.

Plus Underoath is here annoying the s hit out of everyone. Do yourself a favour and go to Dongera - I hear it's always 30 knots and epic.

thx for feedback, one of my top 5 fave kite waves is in nnsw , just a bit fickle unfortunately and as i get more broken i find myself surfing more than kiting...
It might be just for a year or so for another fun experience... open.- know plenty of happy aussies living in NZ , going back to nz is like coming back home from holiday - to another holiday - except in mid winter away from the mountains...
mcdonalds worker in sunshine then - 1 of 10 000 applicants..?!! Still not sure maybe just back to southern goldie - easy... Anything to live the lifestyle. I think the opportunity to live and work in Aussie is a great privilege.
Good luck wherever you choose mate but the goldie would be my last choice due to the crowds and bad vibes in the water!
Awesome waves though if you can get one to yourself

Hi Wondering why you left Perth, i know you said that its crap in winter and hot in summer, but the humidity in Brisbane is way worse than Perth. On holiday in Perth last summer i loved it, doing downwinders from Cottesloe too Scarborough, amazing coast line. Travelled up to Geraldton, stopping at beaches along the way, way less crowded than the East Coast. Will be moving over with my wife in the next few months leaving full time Employment, and selling the house so not a decision made lightly. I hope im not blind to something Ive missed.

The only thing that keeps me in what I see as overpriced w a besides a lady is this. I remember tauranga and gisborne and raglan it was cool and i hear nsw is all big kites.

If only I could live where I wanted to for purely kitesurfing reasons !!! Im thinking Id be picking somewhere north of Perth :-) Cevanties grabs my attention !! And yes TBD ive done a bit of flying and always scanning - we can see so much more from above !!

i was literally thinking that. Thing about the aussies is that they always have a certain sense of entitlement and high expectations for everything related to locations/quality of life. (unlike europe where we look more at career options, infastructure, family, friends etc)

More rats in a cage, less choice in Europe. not sure about a sense of entitlement is the reason for Aussie choosing where to live for lifestyle. Just the ability to choose.
Just do it if it feels right... The west coast slicks - love em all but recent body failure (broke my back in a couple of places - not quite same now) has change the game plan and surfing and kite "surfing" has become a bigger part of my life now than high impact sessions. Have had a few sessions at Coronations like no others in my life. I kind of like Yallingup and Margaret River area.. but for a while there that got a bit like living and surfing at Ballina with regards to wildlife - shouldnt really be a massive deal but.....
