G'day,
we just got back from Vietnam and did a tour with Vietnam Kitesurfing Tours and had an epic epic epic time, some of the best kiting I've ever had, from waves double over head to the most ultra flat water I've ever seen. Anthony, Scott and Twannie have a very special magic spot.
Anthony has done the hard yards with the local government and millitary and has gotten the rights to go there (its a military zone so you need permission, you can only go there with VKT and he takes care of the paperwork).
We drove 2.5 hours from Mui Ne, watching the latest kite videos so you get pumped up to the max, along the way he shows you a map and talks about where to kite and what to watch out for, makes you feel safe, giving you a run down so you know exactly what your up for!. When you get there he then takes you to a sand dune and physically shows you pointing out things to watch out for!!
Basically there is a gap in a reef about 10 km long so if you go up wind or down wind you get a left or right hander wave, but if you want you can go on the inside of the reef and you have the most ultra flat water or go to the middle of the reef gap and have swell riding but the best part is the waves breaking around the reef. Ants Pants is on the left side, Reddogs Bowl on the right. We had 25 to 30 knots for most of the day with a couple hours of 30 to 35. Because of the location they have there own micro climate so this place gets wind almost all of the time. Mui Ne had nothing and yet we had 30 knots, what a place.
The average size kite is 7m on the first day, the next trip we did 9m was average, but it has been know that you can get lower wind but only in the off season and Ant wouldn't go anyway. A lot of the guys used surf boards, I used my twin tip. My wife is still learning and was intimidated at first, loved it, she stayed in the flat water and loved it, even though it can get hard core rough, once your in it, its a blast, she ended up getting deeper and closer to the waves skirting the edges gaining confidence. Next time we go we will do the 3 day tour for sure. You bring surf boards to twin tips, you can use them all. Ant had 3 beach boys so they help you rig up so your not waisting time and get out there a quick as you can, look after your stuff on the beach, and especailly launch and land you.
Every thing is taken care of, great food, beer and soft drinks supplied all day, and at the end of the day, as the sun just disappears we jump on the bus back to Mui Ne, 15 minutes away, we visit the smiling Buddha where you have a moment with the monks, amazing. The trip back is buzzing, like a bus full of school girls, talking about the days amazing sessions we had. Some how the trip back is shorter, if your not careful you end up pissed off your nut, as the cold beers are freely flowing.
I would highly recommend you go on one of the tours, we found it via our hotel kite school, but if you search the net you can find out more details.
Highly highly highly recommended, check out Vietnam Kitesurfing Tours.
cheers,
Robert.
ps coming home is a big come down!!
Hey Beersy, long time no hear. For a cheap holiday and epic conditions, you should think about it. Our best trip to nam yet. 11 out of 12 days, and thank God for the one day off, I needed a rest!! Nah, should have had that day too, but the body was grateful.
cheers,
Robert.
Sounds like you had a ripper of a trip.. im another fan of vietnam and had 3 windy weeks in july/august and wanna go back asap.. has to be the best destination for wind in south east asia and almost all year it will blow ![]()
just got back from nam myself - mui ne was good fun. (we scored it for 4 days in mid november) I heard talk of the special spot a few hours drive to the ne.
Had a great time on stand ups , sailboards and kiting.
here is a little flick i did for a local resort there - there is a little kiting in the vid - mostly windsurfing though - but you will get a sense of the wind and the swell in mui ne.http://exposureroom.com/887f656b583548acb4340e294d0f68da/
Mui Ne works a bit like WA - offshore in the am building to a nice breeze in the middle of the day - swinging more sideshore as the arvo goes on. Definitley contender for best spot in se asia - along with Sumbawa
if there are windier spots up the coast- then that is a total bonus.
Was lucky enough to be with the DKC mob in Mui Ne last week for the Phan Rang trip with Anthony and agree with everything Robert says...absolutely amazing place and perfect conditions. Still smiling from the 30knot flat water blasts ending in massive boosts off perfect ramps ![]()

.
I imagine there might be better places to kite somewhere in the world but have yet to find them.
Good luck with the venture Ant
cheers
Ahhhh, well without work you wouldnt be able to afford kites, so its not so bad... hope you get out a little more soon ![]()
I saw some pics of that spot when I was in Mui Ne, it looks very very nice. Bummer you can't stay there and that it is in a military zone.
I wasn't that impressed with the wind in the wet season monsoon. Dry season monsoon is much better but coincides with our summer.
Simon
G'day Simon,
pity, you really did miss out. Mui Ne in the dry is good, but this place beats it hands down. It has its own micro climate, so north and south of there is nothing but its going off there, crazy but true. Besides, Ant and the gang wouldn't go if its not on. We had a 100 % hit rate so far. Like the rest of the area, the wet season is SW or W so it would be off shore there, much better in the dry with NE or E winds.
By the way, you can stay there, just not on the beach which would be brilliant and I think they may have plans of putting a camp right on the beach in the future. On the 3 day tours you stay in Phan Rang which is about 30 min away.
You got to go there to see what I'm on about, magic spot.
cheers,
Robert.

I'II be interested to see how accessable these permits are, if this is the spot, loads of people will be going, and be assured, the government won't hold back on revenue raising permits!

he's been trying for 3.5 years, and from what I hear it aint easy!! Red tape ... he's onto something here so if I was him I'd go the right channels too!!
He takes care of everything so why not go through him for an extra couple of bucks, makes it easy so all you have to do is go have some fun!!!!!!!!!!
I've been working with the guys from VKT sending my customers and students on there kite camps for the last couple of years. The guys have got their **** dialed and one of the best tours available in SE Asia and definitely in Vietnam. A real draw card for the wave head If your visiting Mui Ne / Vietnam the tour should be on your list.

Hullo Scott
Totally agree, Mui ne is a nice spot. Phan rang offers such a range of opportunities. VNKTours trips are run really professionally, I had a ball there in 09 and will visit again in jan 2010.
The hype is true, get there if you visit vietnam to kite.
