Hi all
I am very keen to start windsurfing or kitesurfing, I live in Wynnum and I want to get out on the water both to keep fit and because it looks like great fun. I am not a surfer but I have done a few lessons in windsurfing and I am slowly picking it up. Which sport would you guys recommend for me to take up. Also I have a very low budget, is there somewhere where I can hire/buy equipment?

Cheers Dee

Good crew of both windsurfers and kiters in Wynnum (I used to live there).

With the fickle QLD wind, however, I'd choose kiting over windsurfing, unless you want to get into formula sailing... this is just because QLD wind is not normally as strong as other parts of the country.

Kitesurfing is the easiest sport in the world besides snowboarding and SUPing, but Windsurfing is awesome if where you live is windy.

You will have to choose a side to be one. I say take the blue tablet.

Kitesurfing has a faster learning curve than windsurfing. Most people that kite surf, and have windsurfed in the past would never go back to windsurfing, including me.

yeah since kiteing my windsurfing gear has ended up next to the karate outfit, drum kit and the 3 min abb machine in the back of the shed .....

Windsurfing comes into it's own 25 knots plus. Also the good guys in WA can really wind - surf and are exceptional on waves. The big skeg keeps them connected. But the gap is fast closing, if not already closed, if not been surpassed in the waves. (Some debate exists here, but not for very long when you see crew getting deep inside barrels).

Kite mate unless you get 25plus all the time, which you don't in, so Kite!

Winsurfing is sic and only for the hard core. Kiters should stick to the park where they belong... PS. i love my ab roller...

Snog your horny in-bread 1st cousin or the hawt new chick in town?

Go for kiting.

Kidding. Just get out on the water - either way ou'll love it.

Defer to locals advice on wind strengths and days per year for sailing/kiting. (But choose kiting )

Before you start kiteboarding go read rsc's posts.

Remember that rsc started kiting recently, just as you are thinking of doing.

Kiting appears to be dangerous to both your body and your mind, so take care out there.

But remember, if you start kiting and it all goes wrong (even if it is only 60% your fault) then you can always seek solace and comfort in the Seabreeze forums.

Actually if you go down the Kiting route, I'm pretty sure RSC has either given up Kiting, or topped himself. Either way, I'm sure his gear will be up for sale very shortly, so stay tuned.

I live in Manly Qld, have kited about 5 times all summer. Poleys seem to get out much more than we do lately. No one around here will hire a newbie kite gear. You may be able to hire windsurf gear from Boardcrazy.
The poleys meet at the entrance to the yacht club near Rose bay.
If you want to learn to kite you will be travelling upto Brighton/sandgate (near redcliffe) to learn for a few months as there in no where suitable for learners near Wynnum.
Unless you are like the Hero that got slammed into the yacht club fence recently and trashed a brand new kite big cut over his eye and luckily no damage to the expensive boats etc.

Please just use common sense when learning, having rocks expensive boats and open deep water downwind is not the place for beginners.
