I was down at Thredbo riding downhill on Sunday morning when I witnessed a bloke head off from top terminal towards kozi with kiteboard in hand and cabrinha strapped to his back, to what I suppose to do was kite one of the lakes which I hope didn't eventuate..
National parks is pretty sensitive about the 4 lakes down there and winter kiting in general the last thing the winter kite community needs is a clown making a seen down there in summer for his satisfaction of kiting a 20m wide lake..
If anybody knows who it was clip him on the ears please..

What is it with NSW peeps lately? If competing against QLD ain't enough, they have to stick their noses in everyone's business.

I hope you go ...

Won't someone think about the endangered spider snail that isn't fast enough to get away from a DH rider hooning down the hill, not to mention all that pollution that powering the ski lift generates during the warm months of summer.

I kinda get it.....but,

Think about the massive impact Thredbo as a resort puts on the area which includes the hugely developed MTB infrastructure put in place in the last few years. I'm super conscious of the fragility of the Backcountry in Kosi, but unless you actually saw someone riding the lakes then it never happened.

As a MTB, BC skier/boarder, kiter in the area, it rates fairly low on the impact scale. The winds are ****y down in the lakes anyway.

I'm defiently no fun police!! There's just a time and place and up their in middle of summer on a Sunday Ain't it!! Word is national parks wanna ban kiting in winter and somebody kiting the shallow as f$&# and gusty as **** semi protected lakes in the summer time defiently ain't helping our case..
Thredbo have a lot of restrictions when building their trail network and ask the protocall if you get a flat up top!!
Also do a little research on how the chairlift is powered for some of the major events..
National parks take the place very seriously not sure if any of you guys kite down their in winter, doubt you do by your comments

Do you kite down there in winter mate??
I do and enjoy it and wanna keep doing it so this sorta is my business..
The area around there on a Sunday is like George St and the possibility of the wrong person seeing it is pretty high..
Anyway as someone said might not of even happened old mate might of got out there and relised how gust as **** it is and canned the idea..

I kite in winter and have done since 2005. I understand where you're coming from mate, but Parks won't shut winter kiting down. Extremely low impact. They have bigger fish to fry.

Hey Cox, welcome to Planet Earth. Ever heard of it? Yeah, it's that blue round place where people have to get along and share the place. Sad, but true. Find your own spot and be done with it. Change your glasses, as nothing else will do it for you, and enjoy the difference I say. Good winds

Lofty, unfortunately things don't always work out so easily.

We are fighting all around NSW to keep the beaches open to kiting, and usually only a few people doing the wrong things are the ones causing the issues.

I kited above Thredbo on a regular basis in the past two winters, it is one of my passion now. The environment is beautiful and can also be dangerous. The four glacial lakes are very special, their very low level of mineralisation and nutrient maintain a unique ecosystem.

National Park don't care about people's enjoyment of the place. They actually make is more difficult for people to go there on purpose: in the past 30 years they have demolished dozen if no more of the available shelters that were built in the mountain and used by hikers and cross country skiers. I don't want to any idiot giving them ammunition that can be used as a pretext to regulate snow kiting out there.

So yes, I do get worried that actions of a few will bring regulations that will stop other from enjoying the mountain.

coxy31, where did you hear the kite ban rumor from?

I'm also interested in where the rumours come from. For what its worth, after talking to Parks on several different issues over the years, they do place flora and fauna before people in every respect but the biggest user issue in winter has been defacating all over the place and in particular near huts. They manage the best they can on meagre budgets.

Kiting in the area has increased rapidly but the impact has nothing to do with kites. Kiting on the lakes is a different issue and as mentioned, very sensitive in many ways.

The hypocrisy of people using the resorts heavily both winter and summer and calling out a possible attempt at kiting on the lake questionable. More than likely Marty from Koz Kiters would have some info.

Another issue in winter and possibly more of a risk in harming reputation is people kiting around the resorts. ie setting up next to Perisher carpark etc. It's been done before.

I think you're on the right track in some respects coxy31 but there are plenty of other issues for Parks to deal with. There are some good people involved in Kozi and they aren't all carrying the old mid 80's attitude about park use.

I saw someone kiting on the Gold Coast recently. These Beaches are a sensitive coastal park.

Please find another area. Id recommend the WA section.

Mate are you serious? My parents live on lake Eucumbene at Anglers Reach , that lake holds 9 times as much water as Sydney harbour. And is 600 ft deep in places, so your comment about a 20 m wide shallow lake is dogcrap. There is also a sailing club on lake Jindbyne so sailing happens there often . Don't think I would kite there without a dry suit even in Sumer the water is cold but if you look at some of the places people kite in Europe it is tame.

? Where did he go ? if he was at Thredbo he did NOT go to Eucumbene, good luck to him if he got a sess in. There probably more enviro stuff going on in the alps than worrying about someone kiting ? really. The lakes up there temp wise keep the punters away.
Hey Rattlehead any pics of rainbow trout ? the reach good spot to troll.

Mate you have no idea what your talking about so keep your "DOGCRAP" comment to yourself..
I really don't care how deep or how much water lake Jindabyne or eucumbene hold, I don't care how many days a week the guys at the local sailing club piss in their towns water supply and I certainly don't care where your parents live!!
The lakes you talk of are no where near the 4 alpine lakes this guy was heading towards, maybe do yourself a favour and google them lake cootapatanba, lake albina, club lake and blue lake (maybe even educate yourself for future posts trying to rite someone off).
After you've done some research you may realise How serious national parks are about preserving the alpine area and these 4 lakes!! Heck you can't even ride a push bike out there in summer and anything that doesn't have snowshoes, snowboard or ski's are banned in winter that's why it's such a privilege been able to kite it in the winter, a chute or run that would normally take a days walk is accessible in and hour..
I'm very very far from a greenie and agree that kiting in the alpine area in winter has a very small footprint if any but somebody trudging down to one of these 4 lakes in the middle of summer essecially on a weekend of one of Thredbos largest festivals could and will attract the attention of the wrong person and could ruin it for all of us that enjoy it in the winter..
Anyway as I said it may not of even eventuated as I didn't accually see anybody kiting, old mate might just enjoy walking the Thredbo to kozi grates with his kit as a reminder of the ocean..

Nope, as I said in my first post..
Who knows the guy might just like chair lift rides and very long walks with his kit 200ks from the ocean and never even intended on kiting..
P.s thanks for your input
