Who has used a wakeboard and what has been you thoughts?
Current 2014 'wake style ' boards are nearly identical. First hand experience is worth sharing!
Serious?
I kited with a wakeboard for probably the last 7 or so years... The only difference with the board I have now and a wakeboard is that it has a better rocker line and wider tips for added pop, but besides that it's essentially the same thing (as are almost all kiteboards). Also it depends on what wakeboard you are talking about, they vary as much as surfboards and some of them would suck behind a kite.
Got a 2013 Watson Hybrid for my wake/cable board, figured if it was good behind a kite then bonus. Have to say I tested a slingshot Vision the other day and preferred it.
I'm riding the Watson finless and it definitely has its moments, but if it was my only board I would be cooked!

I rode one for about the last 3 or 4 years behind the kite... so it could be your technique, or possibly you just happened to get a board pressed with more rocker. LF wakeboards rocker seems to vary a lot between different boards of the same model as you can never tell for sure how much it will spring back.

Out of interest, what wakeboards did you ride?
I snapped my old kiteboard the other week, and wanted to ride the next day so thought i'd give the wakeboard a crack. Its a pretty old (2005/06ish?) Hyperlite Era 142, with about 6.8cm rocker, 3 stage. The pop was fine, but it was bloody hard to go up wind with. I'm thinking a newer wakeboard, with a continuous rocker might be better for kiting, but I dunno?
Ended up buying one of your axis Tranqs on the weekend, and for similar size boards, the difference between that and my old wakeboard is amazing. Rode the same location, in basically the same winds. So much less effort to go upwind, and far nicer on the knees in the chop.
Hey Daniel, I rode lots of different boards over the years but the best I rode was the 2010 Liquid Force Watson, it had about 2.3inches of hybrid (almost continuous) rocker and was a board that could work on cable boat or kite. Pretty unique really.
Hyperlite Era with 3-stage would be a slow board. Any board with a big 3-stage rocker will be slow, also wakeboards typically have fairly narrow tips which doesn't help getting speed when you have a decent amount of rocker.
Yep, although the Tranq still has quite a bit of rocker you will be surprised how only a little bit less than most modern day wakeboards makes a big difference. Couple that with wider tips and a more efficient channel design and you have a board that will travel a lot quicker than a wakeboard.
i rode a dre custom with bindings, my knees love it with its big rocker, but cant cope with it any more due to right amount of wind for it being rare, gone for something with less rocker, get in twice as many tricks in same time less grovelling.
When you say on a wakeboard are you also saying with wakeboard bindings?
I saw a guy doing t the other day, he was pretty good but i felt the potential for a serious stuff up if it all went wrong and you couldnt ditch the board???
Used a CWD wakeboard for a few years as I couldn't find a twintip that I liked (other than an Airush T3, but that had too little rocker) until I got a Cabrinha Custom, the only board I've ridden that comes anywhere near the wakeboard for me ![]()
I've ridden my 142 CTRL Supreme with a kite. It goes well enough if you're lit but it's a dog if it's light. Even finless in the right wind though it goes upwind with good technique.
I also rode the Watson hybrid for a while and once you get the technique down it's really good and manageable but as everyone's said the "fun" use range is very limited and there's too much time spent grovelling about **** conditions and struggling up wind. Once you're powered you can really push your unhooking range at the top end of a kite but at same time you blow out harder when you crash so its a +- situation.
I've tried a few different wakeboard and in all honesty the next board i'll get specifically for kiting will be something with less rocker that's faster and quicker to get on the plane. Kite specific wakestyle boards is the way to go but wakeboards can be fun on the right conditions.
