I am a newbie that is very confused about which board to buy. I have purchased a 2008 12m Ocean Rodeo Rise kite and weigh 110kg (will be riding in Perth). I have been told so many different opinons about boards and I am at the point that I dont know whats right and wrong. Many folk tell me not worry about length and go for a wide board and many others say go for 151cm at least.
Any advice would be appreciated.

If anyone has a suitable board for sale send me a PM.

Cheers

Hey matie,

If you're new as in haven't had lessons, then give some a go, good chance is that you'd be put onto a fairly big board to start with, and if you get that pretty quick then you'll want something smaller, but not super small.. You would be better off with somthing over the say 145cm mark and anything wider than 40cm should keep you happy while you still have the training wheels on as such...

once you get the knack, you'll be wanting something shorter - depending on your riding style that is - and possibly narrower, but not by much...

You'd want to stick to something relatively stiff to start with, but again, you'll work it out.

Lessons and demoing others boards is the way to go...

Im not much of a believer in getting a massive board to learn on. Get a board you think you would use when you are up and going. Id think around the 140mark. Maybe lsightly longer.
Its mostly kite control to get up and going.

I'm 102kg and started out on a 142 seemed to work well for me I now have a smaller board (137) and use the 142 when it's a bit lighter.

Gotto throw my 2c in on the Twin tippers debate.

What I recon works from 10 to 50 knots.

Measure from the floor to your arm pit. That's your board length.

For the width measure your weight,
60 - 70 kg 36cm wide
80 - 90 kg 40cm wide
100kg+ 42cm+ wide

Jump off a chair a few times with your eyes closed and measure your stance.
Or set straps so there's around 30 cm behind your back foot.

Chop, More rocker, more out line shape.
Flat water, Less rocker, more square shape.

I weighed close on 100kgs when I was learning (closer to 90 now thanks to kiting) and learnt on a Airush Switch 150. I think this was a pretty good size to learn on and to get going upwind, You will probably want something smaller after a while but a board this size will make life easy easier in the beginning and you can keep it for light wind days. I now use a FLX138 most of the time and use a surfboard on light wind days so could probably sell it. I have PM'd you with my number
