Hi folks I want to leave OZ in June going kiting somewhere not too far but windy. Does anyone have suggestions where to fly to (New Caledonia or so I was thinking) and whether it will be windy there in June? Thanks so much, cheers, Andy

im off to PNG on sunday 16th may,the trade winds have kicked in there now,spoke to a guy who has been kiting up there for 10 years and from now till aug the winds are really consistant 18-25kts .will let u know when i get back
He said the wind guru readings are always on the light side,ive been checking 7 day forecast on buoy weather and looks good.
I just got back from Sri Lanka. I know it's not close but you may score a cheap ticket with air asia or singapore air. It gets waves and wind and is cheap. It's a great place to go (voted best tourist destination in world by New York Post 2010) simply because they desperately need tourists to support the economy. It's a cross between Indo and India. The devastation after the sunami is still evident. It's a humbling experience to see the spot where 1300 on one train alone died; and 20,000 in the area. Many are still left with nothing. Supporting the 'little' people in destinations hit by some of these disasters can make a big difference in their lives.
With scores of new rock walls built to protect the coast and the north opening up after the war; it will become a hot surfing/kiting destination again in the future. Think about who you give your money to.

There are a few things you have you have to consider when traveling to PNG by yourself.
Make sure you got malaria prophylactic, be careful with Hepatitis!
Local knowledge is important.
You might have to deal with landowners charging you to use their land.
In the Loop Kiteboarding is the official partner of Surfing Association Papua New Guinea and Kiteboarding is part of the Surfing program that is in place in most South Pacific Countries. The SAPNG has been building and implementing surfing in the Sth Pacific region for 50 years.
It is important to follow the levy's and implementations. The SAPNG has agreements with the local landowners to use their land and requires a reef tax, similar to the GBRMA.
This money goes back to the people who look after the reef/land which makes it sustainable.
The SAPNG is making sure that all trips and tours are backed up by them which makes it save and every guest coming to surf/kitesurf gets a great welcome at the airport and a gift bag with local gifts :)
The best to way to travel in PNG is by boat!
Several reasons:
You wont have mosquito
No Hep risks - good food/drinks on boat, clean cutlery, plates, toiletry, fresh water.
You dont have to sleep in the village, but you can :)
roads are bad and hiring a car is not recommended, not many car rentals and crazy prices.
You can fly to most nice places but you still have to get around with locals driving you.

I taught Franz, a bit of a loose cannon :) lucky the locals got all the space at Taurama beach nd the climb trees like no others to recover kites :)

yea they have about 20 local kiters in png atm. One local local guy called nigel(15) . we taught him and the boys left him a set up on our last trip.
10 day trip is $2500 all incl.
I'm really looking forward to the trobiands trip. I'm still really new to the sport and I reckon it's going to be such a good opportunity to learn from some amazing kiters and really progress my riding.
I reckon $2500 for the trip is a good deal. I'm coming form WA which adds quite a lot to the cost but I've been stashing away cash for this for months already.
I've also signed on for the Trobriands trip at the end of July. They sent me a free copy of Land of Lahara (DVD from their last venture up to PNG) and I'm still buzzed from watching it. Should be an awesome trip!
A little confused with the wikipedia article about the Trobriands though.. (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trobriands). Multiple partners starting at the age of 9? The most attractive woman in the village owning the most yams?
