Freedom Kite Mag:
What is the worst thing about kiteboarding?

Rowdy:
There’s lot of things that I don’t particularly like, I mean I do love doing the sport but certain things definitely get me annoyed. Pretty high up on the list for me would probably be the way pros and people associated with the sport act. What am I talking about? Well, just the way so many people are basically putting on this big fake act… they walk around telling everyone how awesome everything is and how stoked they are all the time about kiting, but behind closed doors they are super bitter and talking **** about lots of stuff. The more people you get to know in kiting the more you realise that this type of person is basically the norm. Kiting is boring and fake. Other sports have lots of people that aren’t afraid to publicly say what they think about different things involved with the sport, but as soon as you do that in kiting people think you are a c#nt… Just because you have an opinion doesn’t mean you are hating on something, or someone. People in kiting can’t seem to separate having an opinion on brands, tricks or things from having an opinion of the person related to those things.

Agreed....Good onya rowdy.... Telling it like it is.....

Something I've noticed kiting at Woodies and more so at The Pond which are frequented by pros, the next tier down "wannbee pros", "team riders", "supported by", "sponsored chicks who cant kite" and so on every summer....alot of them so obnoxious, unfriendly, disrespectful to locals and so far up their own azzes in a mediocre professional sport with no money involved.... No wonder they are all instragram whores.... gotta get a pic, need more likes to hopefully get another discounted kite lol....All a facade and wealthy parents

****ing amen tweak

I remember reading the world champion basicly gets something like $1k a week plus half a dozen kites and boards for the year and pretty much spends 80% the year going from one event to next or photo shoot from one to next. Would get a bit monotonous after ahwhile.

Its a pretty hard gig when you can basicly replicate that with a job at woolworths.

So god knows what all the half sponsored people are on. I have a big feeling 90% of them are just getting thrown a quiver of kites and they spend the next 12 months blanket advertiseing every social media platform trying to "make it big" in reality a 2k kite is like $500 to the manufacturer 1k $ to a distributor so you even find schools that are distributors who "sponsor" there local pro riders just because he HAS to buy xx amount of kites to keep his distributor rights. And its THOSE GUYS that I find the funniest. Cause not only are they still basicly paying for 2 other kites or sometimes all of them at a discount sponsorship they no longer have the freedom to fly whatever they want hahaha which is terrible. Flying other kites is really important and they give that up for like $500 which isnt even $10 a week sponsorship

Worst thing.....hmmmm

Pumping 12m, bladder twist, deflate, muck about, re-inflate, valves not aligned, deflate, muck about, re-inflate, another bladder twist, scream expletives, chuck everything in car, jump on seabreeze looking for used electric pump.

Having to wait 2 weeks to find a decent kite for less than $400.

Edit: My current sponsors include, Good Sammies, St Vinnies and Red Cross.

Looking to find a sponsor who sells trim lines! Hit me up.

I'll even put your logo in my next vid, about to take the community by storm.

Worst thing are beach walkers standing there with their stupid phones trying to catch a Pokemon out at sea or on my board!!!

Or just beach goers in general getting in the way of the kite.

Crappy wind, egoistic kiters and bystanders nonunderstanding the sport (u know, when kids and parents run 10m downwind of u while u launch).
Def crappy wind, i would rather spend 4x more time untangling the lines but have a rather normal wind day. U know, not whole planet has good wind :D (50-60 days per year last couple of years)

Kiting I must wait for the conditions. Then I must go when the conditions are right or I missed out

I can ride my mountain bike at any time of the day or night and at any time of the year.

Most annoying thing is that most kiters think kiting is so rad. Let's face it, it is just other fun way of killing time outdoors. It is easy to learn these days. Up to the level 90% of kiters are getting to anyway. Nothing rad about it.
Perhaps time for something new, something innovative, risky, hard to learn. Just like kiting was many years ago.
It's mainstream now so let's stop bragging about it, less talk, more kiting ;-)

The very worst thing in kiting is not being able to kite when the conditions are pumping. Whether it be because of work or injury or whatever, it is really difficult to escape the fact the wind is howling and you should be out there. With surfing when your missing out at least you can not go to the beach and try to to put it in the back of your mind but when it's windy it's windy everywhere- rustling the trees out front of your house- flying banners and flags as you drive through the city its inescapable and it drives me nuts

Also rocking up down the beach when you thought it was gonna be epic and the wind just blatantly isn't there and isn't on the way.

Also when it's blowing about 12 knots gusty straight onshore- enough to turn the surf to absolute slop but not enough to Have a decent kite

Man there's so many bad things about kiting

Get a load of this guy if I ever see u Jono park it will be your other acl needing replacement. You told me when you got ure Jamie T T you use to sleep with it.....Ha ha on a serious note kite line untangling is the most catartic thing one can do but I do seriously hate being in work and seeing the trees bending sideways just to rush home rig up and the wind drop off.

What also bugs the shxt out of me is people not pushing themselves. The famous jason Zinetti once said: you are only as good as your last session. Due to this I Try something different every time I go out boy have I improved & I personally think kiting with a vast mix of people is really important.

worst thing is that you occasionally have to share the beach with windsurfers.

There we go. I said it. Untangeling lines comes probably second...
