News Flash!

Within the next year the WA dept of transport will be imposing regulations that any craft venturing further than 2nm off shore will require an EPIRB or PLB this includes Kite surfing, Kayaking, windsurfing and any thing else.

i had to go out and risk a crew to go save some kiter who's set of an EPRIB and ended up miles offshore for the sake of being "adventurous" the first thing id do upon return is to spartan kick you off the first cliff i found!

This begs the question why would you go out to save them in the first place.
Seems wierd

Epirbs don't have a 'stupid' button. They are designed to be mostly idiot proof. Hence idiots can use them. Sometimes you have to get them before you can find out how reckless they were.

So recreational fisherman who are required to carry epirbs should stay close to shore incase something happens, so they can use their ores and paddle back in?

If someone wants to carry one, wants to do the longer trip or downwinder rather then kite the same stretch of beach for hours on end, then so be it. If or When something does go wrong, you can bet the rescue crew would be a lot happier looking for an epirb signal rather then flying around using nothing but eye sight (before the sun goes down) and hope.

I'm not against epirbs, the more that have them the better. People just need to plan their activities better, register their epirbs and then understand when and where they should be activated.

Imagine if everyone that stepped foot in the ocean had a similar attitude

Hundreds of thousands of manhours and dollars would be saved on the searches that have been initiated.

- the rescue services would be inundated with calls from people in non-emergency situations.

That is a usage issue. That has nothing to do with if people have them incase of a real emergency

You can get caught in a rip, activate your EPIRB and 10 minutes later swim your way out - too late the chopper is on it's way.

That is not how the Hierarchy of response works. A helicopter is rarely deployed without contact first.
Also, if you do not have means of boyancy an EPIRB will do nothing, you will be dead long before they get to you.

Isnt it funny that all the posts from people who are basically saying GROW UP and be responsible for your own actions and dont involve or risk other peoples lives if you choose to be stupid,

No, they are saying that in the event they go missing they have no stake in their own rescue. They are saying they have no responsibility to assist in their location.

must say something about the self obssesed culture of a minority or majority of kite surfers on this forum

"Stuff the police who will conduct the search, their time is valueless. Stuff the S&R guys, who now have to co-ordinate a search, their time and manpower mean nothing to me. Stuff the time of the commercial boats who will be asked to divert to the area, and the planes who will be asked to assist, The lives of those who have to go out in potentially dangerous conditions and search until I am found are not my problem."
