Hi Guys,
A mate of mine turns 50 in April next year, and we're thinking of celebrating by taking a kite boarding holiday. He lives in Taipei & I live in Sydney. We had thought of going to the Aitutaki, but apparently the wind in April is light. So now we're thinking about Vietnam. While I hear it's great in season, I don't know what sort of winds were likely to get in mid to late April. Can anyone fill us in.

By the way, I've been kiting since last August (so can sail in 15-30 knots, when the water is flat) and my mate is also a beginner. If we can choose a good location, my wife will take her first lesson. So any advice. We're hoping to hear that at that time of year it's 15-20 knots cross shore, and warm water, and wind increasing in the afternoon to a max of 25 knots. Is that true, or just me being hopeful.

Thanks.
Dave

that timing is definitely post season at mui ne/vietnam, would have to be lucky to get more than marginal winds then

try boracay maybe?

taiwan gets excellent wind nov to feb on the mainland, but is nuking then in the strait at penghu before moderating there before the typhoon season
if you were more experienced i would say plan a trip to penghu - very different place, and very windy! but maybe save it for the future
good luck with the trip

Vietnam has wind most of the year, I have been coming here for 5yrs.

Last week was kite-able 5 days

April is normally pretty good and is the end of high season, so not to many crazy Russians around ;)

Check this video, the water is definitely not super flat.

Dave, sharing experience of my 1 visit to Mui Ne in Jan last year (so not as much experience there as other posters). I was there for 2 weeks and had a great time generally but I would describe the wind during that time as on the light/intermittent side. OK for down winders. It was very choppy. Some will probably disagree but due to conditions and the crowds its not the best place I have been to for beginners.

Thank you all for your feedback - very useful.
I'll also look into Boracay, a quick search show it to be beautiful - hum now all I have to do is find a site that tells me about the wind in April...

Any more comments will be gratefully received.
Thanks
Dave

Unfortunately April is in between the two primary wind seasons in Asia. You can still catch some wind if you're lucky, but the odds are certainly not in your favour. Pranburi, Thailand typically has thermal winds in April, but skunking is also common. (FYI, you won't see Pranburi's thermals on the wind forecast sites.)
