Im just wondering how other Rebel and Rhino riders set up their kites for trying unhooked tricks? I have one of each but dont believe it is the best set up attaching your safety to the fifth line as when you unhook and let go you end up with a hell of a mess and is very difficult to recover your bar and relauch your kite.

Are others attaching their safety to the chicken loop? If so are people using the North safety leash to do this? Im just worried the jaws of the safety will pull open and let go of the kite all together in a big stack. Has anyone else had this problem?

I think it is not only the North kites, on any kite for unhooked riding you will connect the safety leash to your chicken loop.

P.S: if you have a stopper for your depower trim you need to make sure to push your stopper to the very end of it that allow your trim to depower your kite.

Hi Rooboy

The North leash is a real pain when it comes to connecting it to the chicken loop. Try this out yourself,

Connect it to the chicken loop and yank on it straight down, the clip holds.

However, give it a bit of a yank from the side and on the angle and jaws will open up.

I know a couple of guys who have had this come open and watched their kites fly away.

Some ppl have experimented with connecting the leash just above the chicken loop on the trim rope itself to limited success. It doesn't come open as easy as when its on the loop, but again the side angle pressure will open the jaws.

I suggest getting a leash that actually has a decent carabiner on it. As long it can be disengaged from the harness easily enough when **** hits the fan, i cant see a reason why you would want it to be able to pop of the kite end.

I know this isnt as safe, but if you are connecting to the 5th line and dont want a tangle when you let go of the bar you can adjust the 5th line stopper to only pull through enough to depower the kite but not kill it completely, where it gets into a tangle.

Thanks for the feedback Omega, you have confirmed what i feared re the North safety leash and the sideways pull. I was thinking a safety with a good carabiner was going to be the way to go.

What safety leash's do other people use for unhooking?

Hey dudes, I'm just getting into the world of unhooked madness. I have 09 rebels. I did try to put the north safety leash directly onto the chicken loop (after a recommendation from someone). I was in about 17knots on my twelve and practicing unhooked raleys. After a big face plant I let go of the bar and to my horror surfaced to see my kite sailing off into the distance. So yeah, bottom line, the jaws won't hold the kite when connected to the chicken loop, only designed to attach to the 5th line.

Hi. Yep I have been hooking into the chicken loop on my old vegas. There is a small metal clip on the chicken loop to do that with, and I am using a cabrinha leash that I had left over.

Your problem can be easily solved and you can still use the same leash if yoou want.
Process:
1. get a pigtail off your mates kite (loop to loop)
2. dont tell him (this will be funny later)
3. get a small metal ring (the smae size that is used on Oh **** handles works best)
4. loop it around you chicken line itself or on you loop (this depends on how your quick release works, it should be easy to look at it and work out a good place to attach the pigtail)
5. now the pigtail is on loop the other ends loop through and over the ring so now the ring is attached to the pigtail which is attached to you loop/line.
6. attach you leash.
7. go kiting/ laugh at friends misfortune.
8 (optional) have a pigtail ready to offer friend in time of need, but tell him it will cost him a beer.

Now you know how to have your leash attached so it wont come off and you also get a beer for doing it.

The north safety leash clip is crap on 5th line (have lost my kite twice, to be retrieved after much hassel) let alone on chicken loop/suicide.

Get another leash, cant advise ref unhooked set up tho.

The Mystic and Prolimit safety leashes are nice, both have Carabiners and Rubber-Foam around the leash keeps the leash from bruising your body and the releases never come undone if not intented!

Happy unhooking
