Hey all,
We (probably 3 people) are planning a trip to australia this winter.
We have been to the goldcoast before and we are figuring out where to go now.
At the moment the consideration is between perth area (more wind?) or the melbourne area (more other things to do?)
We are heading for about a month starting around the 10th of december.
Anyone had a good kiteboarding trip to OZ who can give us some advice? Should we rent a camper and if so which route should we take?
Thanks in advance
dom
Perth has lots of White Pointer Sharks in the water and poisonous snakes at nearly all the good kite spots.
You should go to Melbourne, they have this super sweet spot called St Kilda, its is nice and central to the city and hardly anyone rides there, except for the friendliest people you could find on the water by far.. Oh and after your done riding you can walk around the block and there is pussy galore for all your boys to enjoy! its a win win situation!
Dow,
This topic has been covered to death in numerous other Threads. Try using the search function or google it.
Laurie hows the travel sub forum looking???
Good Winds when you get here Dow.
By the way when you say this winter you mean this summer dont you???
At that time of year you have many great choices.
west coast road trip: augusta-exmouth amazing kiting locations and world class wind.
East coast road trip: southern NSW all the way to SE QLD, again a plethora of awesome kiting spots, pretty good wind(not as good as WA but still kiting most days)
southern coast road trip: Melbourne - Adelaide not to sure about this one but I know they get plenty of wind and big seas. The water is much colder though.
You really can't go wrong with any choice here, It all depends on what you want out of your holiday. If it is kiting only then WA is probably the safest option. But there is a lot more to do(outside kiting ) on the east coast.
Just remember to respect locals and DON'T RIDE NEAR FLAGGED SWIMMING AREAS and you'll be sweet.
Yeah St kilda is the go.
If you have forgotten to pack a syringe, dont worry, you will find one in the water or stuck in the bottom of your foot while walking on the sand.![]()

DONT GO TO MELBOURNE
We have been getting alot of sharks in melbourne, so i would not kite here and last summer we like only had one windy day
It is not safe cause they have banned shark hunting so there roaming the bay. If you dont think it is true google sharks and melbournes one day seabreeze for all of summer.
As the climate warms, drop bears have now moved as far south as Melbourne. Don't get me wrong, Melbourne is still cold and miserable, but it has warmed up just enough that the angriest, sneakiest (and now vegemite-immune) species on the planet can live here. To compound this, the sharks get attracted to the bay even more now because of the rivers of blood flowing into it from all the beachside drop bear attacks.
The Australian government tries to keep the drop bear problem quiet so that tourists and their money will still come, but as an Australian with a conscience I have to let all prospective visitors know that more than 30% of tourists get mauled by drop bears, and nearly half of them don't survive their injuries.
The only hope is that the drop bears will die from the infections they are sustaining through their new habit of injecting their victims' blood into themselves with all the syringes they find at our beaches.
dj did you see on the news the other week that dropbears have somehow got through the dropbear fence on the WA border and have pushed as far into WA as safety Bay . There have been reports at the end of last summer that dropbears were seen as close to the beach as the carpark by the pond and rockingham hospital reported some bad cases of gouging .
gee! those dropbears are breeding like rabbits and spreading like a plague!![]()

i think they need to increase the height of the dropbear fence, as the dropbears really do pose a serious threat to the safety of us all.
dont go to melbourne its full of victorians, go to WA for a real kite trip and pack a small kite. get a camper or a tent and go feral.
Beware also the rarer, but also deadly, aquatic drop bear! Almost impossible to find information on this beast. Ever since the Australian Prime Minister, Harold Holt was taken by one there has been a complete media blackout on this creature. (google "Harold Holt" and you will see what I mean)
Hey DJF & dusta, looks like your comments have slipped through the government internet filter. But just a reminder that the 'official' name for the fence is 'the dog fence'.
You, know, the fence across Australia that stops..... 'dogs' ![]()
I would like to know how did the bears even get into the country? far out it sucks. You cant get to alot of your favourite beaches now, cause of the dam rangers putting in bear wires. They seem to be all over Vic, SA and WA the rest of the states are ok. I think i might google how they got here in the first place, cause it is a very harsh land for them to live in and breed. It's funny when you meet some one from the uk and tell them, we have bears in our state, they all go WHAT?? they think it's some sort of joke
Thanks for all the proper advise.
Just to let you guys know i've been in Australia before doing the great downwinder sponsored by monkeykites at that time. (This means i already know about drop bears, great whites etc. You guys should figure some new creatures since even wikipedia knows about the drop bears;))
Is there anyone who can tell more about roadtrips around the west coast and possibly from melbourne to adelaide?
