Just returned from a week on the island with a Dave Gardiner hosted kiting tour, and loved it. Got a good break with the weather and kited 5 of 8 days (Could have been 6 - sacrificed 1 day for domestic reasons). 1 marginal on a 15m, one good on a 15m, 2 on an 11, and one on an 8m. Was worth taking a full range of kites. Winds were NW to SW, so only kited the lagoon and reef.
The lagoon is big and deep enough to kite at all tides with few hidden dangers. The runway divides it into a north and south zone so you have to be aware of that, but its not an issue in practice. Lagoon is moderately choppy with a good wind, but gets flatter near the reef. Half tide over the reef is unbelievably flat and fast. I?m not much good on waves, but there were good waves and breaks on a few directions and I had lots of fun on a TT - will defiantly bring a board for surf next time. If the wind is offshore for the lagoon, there are more exposed options on the eastern side, or Dave can provide a boat for back up. Water is warm, about 19 degrees, I was comfortable in a spring suit. Beach launches are only 5-15 minutes from accommodation, so easy to have a couple of sessions if the wind is on and, no crowds on the water!!
Winds look to be system dependent, so not everyday reliable, but are lots of things to do on off days - fishing, boat tours, golf, hiking, diving, snorkelling, surfing, SUPing, eating,? My spouse was more than happy with a week to read and write - and its very family friendly.
Downsides - Not the cheapest holiday going; exy airfares and expect resort prices and hefty freight margins on shopping. No mobile coverage and limited internet (a plus??). A bit of messing about getting gear over, but its manageable. (14kg limit on accompanying baggage, but you can bring another 9 kg which may arrive the next day, or purchase another bag). Limited night life. (i.e. none), but grog prices are reasonable through the bottle shop.
The supported kiting with Dave was fabulous. Pickup, drop off, local knowledge, great welcome dinner - he?s determined to get you out if it?s at all possible, and a mad keen kiter himself - great value and highly recommended.
