just looking for advice on packing Kites in luggage
im going to try and put one inside another completely get all air out of them and compress the bag then put in checked luggage
my smallest kite bag is about 2 cm bigger than carry on luggage allowance wondering if any one just carries it on with them per heaps I can use the straps to compress it
pump and bar fits in board bag and just scrapes in under 10 kgs for the board bag allowance that I've paid extra for
any of tips or experiences with airlines would be great
I’m holidaying in Thailand early next year and am deciding on the options of taking my kites or hiring over there. Check these out - they might give you some ideas...

iggypop,
you can carry your kites on carry-on luggage in the plane. I've done this many times with no issues whatsoever. They may ask to inspect the bag at the safety scan as it looks a bit unusual to them. If weight and/or space in an issue then you can also wear the harness on the plane, just remove the hook. I've also done this without any issues.
Pushing 100% of the air our the kite is the key to small packing size. If you have to fold it very tightly try to do it before you take off and unpack soon after landing as it's not ideal to leave a kite so tightly compressed for a few days. I don't see the need for vacuum bags or compression bags, just a nice fold with some tape over a plastic bag does the job well.
Airlines are starting to get more strict with carry-on luggage weight and size and may ask you to check it in if it's over the max dimensions or weight, especially if it looks too bulky or heavy.
Also I find that kite bags are unnecessary extra weight and space in your luggage. I leave the big bags at home and use inner kite bags which are light and small.
It may sound obvious but also make sure you gear is completely dry, it will weigh less.
Hope this helps,
Christian
