Hi there ladies and gents, just joined up today as I would like some info from any townsville locals on here please.
I am about to move to Townsville for work, I am a keen kiter, have been in the sport for around 2 years now. Now I am asking for a couple of reasons, firstly for general info but mainly as im about to purchase a new quiver and want to base around what is suitable for me when I get to Townsville. I weigh 72kg and have am mainly free ride and boosting, , starting to do kite loops. The other reason I ask is because I get conflicting reports from everysite , willy weather is always forecasting different to windfinder and seabreeze is different again, is there some special formula you local fellas use!
Anyway id just like to know the general stuff
What is your windy season?
Whats your average wind speed when its on?
Do you have many days above 25 knots? Where I just come from is your boring old seabreeze of 14 to 18 all season. Just mow the lawn on the 12! Im hanging out for some 25 to 30 knot sessions.
And finally what do you think for me at my weight ? 12 and a 9?Im hhappy to go with 3 kites. The job I am moving for has very flexible hours so when I have the time I want to be out at any chance so if this means getting a big quiver to extend that time on the water im all for it.
Thanks in advance for the info lads.
Much appreciated.
Hope to see you all on the water soon.
Kevin
It is windy a lot up here, doesn't often get above 25 knots but it can.. Usually will get 4-5 days of 20knots in a row when the highs roll across in winter and abit less with the seabreezes in summer. 12 and 9 will suit you just fine. Forecast is not very accurate for up here, but when seabreeze shows green arrows it almost always means 20 knots in the afternoon. Plenty of good spots to explore up here :)
Hey Kevin,
Townsville and region is sic for kiting, lots of wind and good spots.
Come in the shop when you up here and we give you a run down. We are also offering progression lessons from myself and Andy Yates throughout winter so you can learn from one of the best band progress.
Please find below a bit of info about the regions kiting locations.

Check out local Townsville spot Pallarenda
cheers
Marv
Thanks for the info fellas
So would it be worth while getting a 7m or would 9m be as big as I need.
Marv I will call into your shop, are you located near the main cbd?
Gidday Marvin, your last post got my interest for oli to do some progression over winter, school holidays best suited. He is going well with basic intermediate moves, hooked in loops is about how far he is on the curve, unhooked next step ?
Any chance you could give me an idea how it could fit in, 1 on 1 or junior squad/ flock. My back pocket would like have an idea on true and apparent wind. all done choff&cheer
Hey mate, the weather is a bit hard to predict atm. We have had quite a bit of rain around in last weeks. However, the high pressure systems are on which means we usually get pretty good and consistent E winds. We can do some progression sessions with Oli any time with 2-3 days notice. Maybe we look into next school holidays..Im happy to do a package for few days progression lessons between Andy Yates and myself.
cheers
maybe we can get few more guys up from around Queensland and do a weekend in Alva with everybody..
Id be up for that.. me and the guys from Bowen would definitely come to alva for a sesh
sweet mate lets work on some dates.I can have a chat to Andy and Rach and see if they keen to do a clinic in Bowen for weekend.. I know few guys in Bowen would be keen. what you think Phil?
hey marvin ya one step ahead of me, just made a post to see interest in a alva trip and coaching for airlie/ bowen mob. Book oli in if it goes ahead at bowen.
thinking for Phil, **** yea come on down.
well we are available any weekend for either bowen or alva. So whenever is good winds and easy for you guys :)
Yeah I wouldn't get to excited, sent intheloop a pm a week ago and they haven't bothered to reply.
Business must be so good they can be Choosey!!
So far it seems to rarely get above 15 knots here and when it does it blows off shore. I hope this is the bad part of the year?
Marvin and the guys are fairly busy running a retail shop and business, plus organising tours, plus lessons (SUP and Kite), and doing a lot of work promoting the sport and safety.
So if you don't get a reply it's because they simply can't at the moment. I think they are also organising another kiting event/race this year and that takes a lot of time to say the least.
Be patient. I am sure Marv or someone at InTheLoop will be in touch.
As for the wind situation yeah ATM it's all over the shop, but that's typical this time of year. Townsville actually gets around 10months of pure heavenly winds. Even on a Northerly, there are some other sweet spots to kite. So if you can make it down next month or so, you won't be disappointed. And above all, come into Marv's shop and say hi! The crew here (InTheLoop and locals) are very approachable and friendly. They don't spin crap (unlike me!
).
I don't work for him or anything like that. I just think there is too much couch surfing going on.
Early this sat and sun morning arcadia magnetic island should be a bit of 9m wind. Can any maggie islanders confirm that?
Lofty which 10 months are these good months? Or if its easier what are the 2 bad ones lol. Im guessing june is one of them. The wind is very weak
Faceplant... as I said, now is not good, but winds are picking up. I just had a land kite this afternoon and it was pumping 14knots, maybe more. Tomorrow may drop off a bit but Sunday and into later next week looks good.
Like I PM'd you. Check BOM, check Windalert.com, check Sbrz and compare. If all are nudging around the 12to15knots then it could be more out on the beach and most likely there will be enough for a 10m kite at least.
Oh, worst months are Jun, Jul and maybe a month or two extra, but Sep, Oct, Nov, Dec, Jan, Feb, Mar, Apr, May have been the best I've seen here. I've only been here a year and half so maybe I am wrong.

Lol now Im confused I thought the winter months were the windy season in nq? Whens the season for up here when you get some solid 20 knot days etc
