I saw someone somewhere posting about using thermals or something under a wetsuit. Can't remember where I saw it but it was hear somewhere. Does anyone do this or know about it? Does it work? What sort of thermals are they? Where do you get them?

Oh and please feel free to start your post with how soft I am amd how I need to grow a set and the rest of it. I know how soft I am and how girly etc.... But when I'm warm and toasty i can cop anything you have to say!

Hold back the dry suit talk, not interested in that route!

Really? I guess if it's a pretty tight sealed suit, otherwise I think it would be pretty useless not to mention uncomfortable and hard to put on.
Are you sure they weren't talking about use with a Drysuit? That would make a lot more sense.

Nah, seriously... Steamer, booties, gloves and maybe a hoodie if you're really cold.

Mystic metalite wicked rashie, I use it in the winter with boardies, it's as warm as a 3 2, put it under your normal wetsuit and you'll be toastie, however it'll cost the same as a mystic 5 3 double lined which will guarantee warmth, very flexible suit for its thickness

I have a Westsuits polyfleece thingo, wore it under the 3/2 last winter when things were getting a bit cold. Worked well on the upper body. Froze my balls off though, wish they made long johns!

I've got a 5/4, booties and a vest hood thingo but the balls freeze as do the legs. Someone posted something about some under suit thing and sounded just the trick for a softy like me!

Sharkskin, is a fleece lined 1mm suit, great undersuit. always used them Diving in Tassie in the winter.
There is also battery powered heated undersuits available ive tried them but never liked them.

That is what i wear.

Thermals under a wetsuit work fine. Polypropylene is supposed to be best but I think any thin polar fleece or other thermal top would do.

But, if you're cold wearing a 5/4 then you're either a wuss, or you are really, really susceptible to cold. I use a 4/3 when it's extremely cold, or a 3/2 with a polypropylene top underneath.

Do you tuck your wetsuit legs into your boots? That stops the water running up the leg of your suit and making you cold.

Daneil
Have a google Poly Fleece tops & bottoms, lots of divers use them as an extra layer under your wetsuit.
Companies like Quick Silver, Xcel, O'neil, Lavacore, Hyperfelx make them.

Thanks gremlin, I think you've just solved my problem. The sharkskins are very expensive and after a quick google your suggestions look a lot cheaper and look to have exactly the same result. Thanks for the suggestion.

Hi Daniel,

It might have been me that spoke about the thermal top under the wettie. I've been wearing an Ozone or ION thermo top underneath the 3/2 for years. The thermo tops are just a fine micro fleece short sleeve top. They are comfortable to wear and trap a very thin (>1mm) layer of water under the suit against your body which gets warmed and then keeps you warm.

Basically turns a 3/2 into a 4/2. Doesn't help the tackle unfortunately, but makes a Spring/Autumn wettie into a winter wettie. Much cheaper than buying a full wetsuit.

The new high end wetsuits of today are pretty amazing though, but fairly pricey!

Thanks DM and Nathan,

$35 is a bargain, I will try these!

DM I've decided next winter I will get a new age fandangle wetsuit probably one of the Yamamoto rubber ones because I also have terrible skin (eczema) and normal wetsuits make it worse. It's just hard to spend that money when we are already half way through winter and it's also not there to spend!

Thanks for all the advice

Plus Plus from me.
Polyfleece under a 2/2 way warmer than my usual 3/2. If I get a chance to get out this winter (havent yet) Im going to be trying a 1.5mm steamer with polyfleece. Thinking that will be even better than last winters 2/2 shorty.

I use the polyfleece all year round - under the wetty for winter.
TIP - get a short sleeve - long sleeves are a bit bulky under wetty sleeves.
SS $45 LS $49 Best thing you could buy !!!!

Fark people have become soft.

Back in my days it was footy jumpers down at Johanna and Port Campbell!

But if you really cannot stomach some cement, I suggest a simple rashie or full body rashie, that we call up here Stinger Suits! Put that one, and then your wetty!

You won't look back.

Daniel,

the open cell yamamoto rubber is excellent. my spearsuit has it and can dive, thrash along at 20knots in boat, dive, boat, dive etc and stay warm.

if its mainly your torso that feels the cold try wearing a cheap rainjacket over your wettie. It cuts out the windchill on your wetty which is the main issue. Its a tip zi picked up sailboarding at sandy Point.

ive tried it kiting in winter down at Rye and it works really well.
