my dad and his best mate have been working and developing surfboard fins in the background for many years- this week at the start of the margaret river wsl pro they launched the final production version to the public! first a idea 35-40 yrs ago at the bluff on a surf trip at 'quobba station'- now a reality. I've been riding this final production version for months and its insane! the speed and hold is like no other, definitely the way forward for paddle surfing ,towing and also kiting. the future is here!!!! designed and developed right here in wa, in margaret river. Has anyone tried these fins on a kiteboard? Twin tip or wave riding board?
yes mate been riding them most of summer, solidly since Jan! Living them! Had a couple
good tows on them too- cyclone Marcus was one of them and they are super fast with heaps more hold than any regular fin.
Ive have seen gimmicks and fads in surfboard design evolution for 50 years...they did sell more new boards over that time but most were failures...is there too much drag with the fat bottom in your design...good luck with it guys..basically its the skill of the rider.
I'd be interested to see how good they go in a board but for $230 a set that's a bit steep if you don't like them
I'd be interested in the quantitative data for the % extra straight line speed or drag reduction compared to normal fins.
Or is this something you can just feel?
They used to put those rails on windsurf fins in the 80s ,didn't take off.
And foiling was around in the late seventies as well and didn't pick up back then. Look at it now!
Good thing that there are some people challenging the status quo out there.
Good luck to them, but I reckon they have shot themselves in the foot with their pricing.
A premium FCS or Future set will set you back $160-180. $230 is not that far off if it is indeed a game changer.
... looks like its taken a few years to perfect the idea that's been around for a while, nice one.
I was reminded of my old windsurfing days and I found a link of my old favorites:

When Quobba come out with a quad setup I super keen!

Wow. The +ve vibes from this compared to Lee's BuzzKites debut into the market and in this forum, leaves me stunned. Bash one, pamper the other. Is it a WA thing this? Sucks really. Nepotism in kite surfing is rife.

Maybe that's the difference between surfers and kiters...
It sounds like you are blaming the customer because they don't want a product?
They used to put those rails on windsurf fins in the 80s ,didn't take off.
They were straight fences, looks like the curve in these generates lift.
Ryland, my first thought was that kiters don't need the extra speed these apparently generate, and they are only applicable to surfing. If you've been using them I am interested....... making boards I'd be keen to make a board to suit the fins and see.....
$230 is crazy
You need to halve the price for the first year, get everyone on them and then raise your price to profit levels once they have proven themselves.
IMHO
For me being an average surfer I can hardly feel the difference between $50 and $120 fins. I'm guessing if it's pumping and round then the extra hold could be worth it but for kiting where it is generally slop, hard to justify. Plus one of my favourite things is trying to get the tail to slide, I'm not a fan of rails.
all i know is fluid dynamics is complicated, so if they work I'm in. When on the wave, I don't want to be pulled by kite (unless clearing a section) so if these give a bit more speed - win. Stand on the tail or throw some water to slow.
$230 isn't going to get people to trial them. Its a new price point. I don't think many crew will invest unless they know for sure they are light years above the rest. I don't know many crew happy to pay even $150 on fins yet.
,,, fins can make a huge difference, and can totally change the character of your board so why not charge a price accordingly, having a good set of fins is worth a million dollars to me! ![]()

Nope. This may serve as a useful innovation.
Buzz kites just offers the same, same old kites (did I hear anyone shout DELTA!!!!) to an already over saturated market then whinges while people make genuine observations about affordability versus entering this over saturated market.
There's a secret to the success of some companies with totally outrageous price:
The purchaser is more embarrassed to admit to a failed expensive purchase than a failed budget purchase.
Rather like the kids story of the Emperor's new clothes.
"The Emperor's New Clothes" (Danish: Kejserens nye Kl?der) is a short tale written by Danish author Hans Christian Andersen, about two weavers who promise an emperor a new suit of clothes that they say is invisible to those who are unfit for their positions, stupid, or incompetent - while in reality, they make no clothes at all, making everyone believe the clothes are invisible to them. When the emperor parades before his subjects in his new "clothes", no one dares to say that they do not see any suit of clothes on him for fear that they will be seen as stupid. Finally, a child cries out, "But he isn't wearing anything at all!"
Rite so had a little win on a horse last night ($250), so have decided that I would get a set.
im heading to Peru next week so will report back on the fins!
Will be curious to see how they go...... im an average kiter, so wont be an over technical review, they work, didnt notice a difference or there ****.....
A lot of you will know Beau Pilgrim- bws pro rider, rips on a kite and surfing! Anyways he got a set of fcs quobbas last week! First surf he was so blown away and noticed instant performance from his first wave! He was that stoked on them he grabbed a set of futures aswell so that he had all his boards covered . I rang him after a couple days after he had had another surf on them - still so stoked on them! Beau said he doesn't want to surf on any other fins now and this is all he will ride! ??
Sounds like a pimping thread and not answering people's questions.
I gather you are a site sponsor now so as to comply with the pimping rules?
^^^^^Bahhhaha haaah haaa, Markie complaining about people not sticking to the foruming rules. Funny as![]()
i've just spent years on the research orchy bottle and most of my dole cheques developing a finless fin system.
the speed and frictionless sensation is freaking balls out straight up amazing.
if you can't handle the the loose tail sliding uniqueness of this landmark design, then maybe you need to look at your own ability and whether you should be in the line up in the first place.
we're market testing these new finless finsystems and are looking for no a nonsense hard core crew of thick brow mega locals to help take these game changers to the masses.
a 100 bucks and you're on the team.
no time wasters
whole lotta bashing going on here. Either bored people or folks that dont like to see research and innovation going into a sport. Im sure your all happy to pay extra for the North sticker on your knockoff TOMO and update your mobile phones every new model. Somehow you think that its ok to bash a startup thats just put years of research and money into a product not backed by a major brand. Probably out of their own back pockets. Give it a chance ya. Fair enough, if you dont like the 230.00 pricetag, just wait and see how user reviews go. If you still dont like the price tag, then relax and keep riding what you have. You will find that start ups dont tend to put a price on something inorder to get rich. they do it because it's worth it and its what they need to survive.
