check www.seqka.com.au for locations around the Sth East of Qld. The Spit is obviously the bottom end of a very long stretch of beach that wraps all the way back to NSW... If you are into waves the Nth end of the gold coast (shorter drive from Sanctuary Cove) are ideal in SE and NE winds, however, this time of the year the winds are predominately Westerly which is basically off shore all around the gold coast unless it goes NW then you can hit Kirra (Sth Gold Coast almost NSW) which is side shore you can even get away with WNW there too... you can get their in about 45mins from the Cove as you would just go straight to the freeway and head down to Coolongatta Airport exit 40mins later.
If you are looking for flat water then the Broadwater is the go, again same wind directions SE and NE but straight S and N also work at different spots... the only beach that works on westerly winds is the red barge which is the western side of the broad water opposite Loders Creek. Westerlies are normally very gusty and often unpleasant to ride in and if not strong you have to watch the tide at the barge otherwise you will end up the latest attraction at Seaworld or join the bums in bums bay all of which means a long long walk back to your car!
If you are prepared to drive around 1 hr you can get to Wellington Pt which is located in the Bayside of Brisbane where Westerlies are the wind of choice for flat water riding, take booties as lots of low lying rock and reef and MUD! Observe local rules which most importantly include launching below the high tide mark (on the sand) NOT in the park area so best you arrive their on low or mid tide....
enjoy your stay at the Cove...
