Going to Thailand for just over a week with 5 days around ko samui and ko phangan just before christmas and was wondering whether it was worth taking my kiting gear. I've already got a golf bag just wondering if its going to be a pain in the arse to cart my gear around for a day or twos kiting?
In Koh Samui the best kitesurfing is at Maenam beach I spent a couple of weeks there last month.take a big kite I had a 12m would have liked a 16m.There is a french guy that teaches at Maenam has a rescue boat costs about $10 a rescue. Here`s the wind situation www.windguru.cz/30397 only blow a few hours everyday.I think Puket would be a better bet though.
Buzz will let you know at some point soonish, he is living over there somewhere and knows the conditions.
Hi Jimmy,
Contact a friend of mine called Raam. He owns Kiteboarding Asia. They have a location in Koh Samui, Phuket and Hua Hin. contact him on raam@kiteboardingasia.com
He'll let you know what the wind is like, where to get cheapish accom close to the best spot and he is a big foodie, he knows all the greatest Thai restaurants.
Cheers and have a good time,![]()

It will be...
Last year it did actually blow the week before Xmas then stopped right on Xmas Day ...
Who knows what's going to happen this season...
I think Raam rents out kite/board/harness set for 4,000bht($135)
yeah looks like it'll be easier to cough up the $135 and save carting my **** around, thanks for your help guys
Just got back from 2 weeks in Phuket, stayed at Kata Beach. No wind at all, not even for the biggest kite. There are some mal waves around though. Maybe later in the year would be better.
Here`s the phone number of the french guy that lives and teaches there 0862671169.He rents out for 1000baht an hour has North rebels and rhinos.I have a funny feeling Mike from KBA has moved to Pattaya.

Dominique is the French guy's name ...
Also, there is a group of thai guys from Chumpoon around Maenam (north coast Samui) who were hiring gear and teaching as well this year ...
Maenam is deepwater - hence the need for a rescue boat. (kiteable both in SW's or NE's)
Samui Orchid (SSEast coast) is knee deep out to the reef during the 'on' season (nov~mar)...
We kited a lot during the off-season (SWesters jun~sept) at a relatively new spot on the NWest coast - just north of Nathon ... bit rocky - needs high tide - some small reef out the back ... (also, kited a hot secret spot that I'm not saying anything about !)
Mike has set-up shop for KBA in Pattaya ... Raam will probably run the Samui Orchid shop again this season... ![]()
Here's the URL for the boys kiting over at Koh Phangan (only kite school/shop I know of there) ... http://www.cuttlebone.net/ ... should be able to hire some gear off them...
Haven't kited there yet - heard it blows a few knots more strong than Samui - mixed reports really ... don't know what to believe till I get over there when theres wind ... definite potential though ... probably good on a 'full-moon' !
anything going on in phuket at the end of december early january?
ive yet to see any wind there myself :(
Should be some wind for sure Jan ...
www.kiteboardingasia.com do have a school there as well.
cheers,
Buzz
so everyone keeps saying.... i go to phuket 2-3 times a year for the last 5+. only time ive ever seen wind is mid year in monsoons.
It all depends on what side of the island you are on for the June-Oct the best place to kitesurf is near the airport.
with respect, ive wandered around pretty much ALL of the island and am still to see anything worthwhile
Jan,depending on which months your in Puket check out these places from November to March-Chalong Bay about 20 min drive from Patong.
May-Septemebr-Nai Yang beach this is the closest beach to the airport.
I am not a big fan of KBA in thailand but they do know where the best conditions are so if it`s blowing somewhere on the island they will know.Give Todd a call 0815 914 594 and he should be able to steer you in the right direction.
