You don't need a lot of sun exposure to receive the benefits of vitamin D
For most people, adequate vitamin D levels are reached through regular incidental exposure to the sun. When the UV Index is 3 or above (such as during summer), most people maintain adequate vitamin D levels just by spending a few minutes outdoors on most days of the week.

Given the hours we all spend on the water getting smashed by UV light. Ill continue to cover up with a long sleeve rashie and sun cream.

Almost correct. As one ages the rate of effective absorption decreases and as such so does calcium for bones.
Good communication with your GP could help maintain bone density.
I found out the hard way with reduced bone density and 2 fractures in my foot.
I now take D & Calcium supplements
Update:
Just had a melanoma removed from my arm today.
I was one of the younger generation who did not wear protection and frequently got burnt.
2/3 qlders get skin cancer...
You want me to stop putting sunscreen on because some boffin in a country famous for having 1 week of sunlight says so?
Had some scientists i fly with in europe tell me sunscreen just muddles up with your dead skin cells to protect you from the sun. Like thats it... Makes a weird cakey mix batter over your skin they get fried leaving your skin underneath not fried.... I couldnt find anything that said exactly how it works. Were they right?
I Totally agree with the article. We get so brain washed by Big Pharma, Vitamin and Supplement companies, who only want our money. You can't explain away the science of the studies, nor the sheer size of the test populations involved.
Just reread the article.
Ill still be covering up and wearing sunscreen cause i literally live outside.
But it was interesting point how the african americans were suffering from highet blood pressure etc cause theyre skin doesnt allow them to absorb as much... So really they should be outdoors pretty much living as theyre ancesters did and us whiteys should be indoors and in the snow like our ancesters were aswell. Makes sense we all evolved to fit our habitats but now were a bit of everywhere and our bodys are still adjusting to it.
Crazy how far weve come in just a thousand years or whatever. Even 500

Whaddya mean you couldn't find anything that said how it works?
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sunscreen with attention to "active ingredients".

Or how much we have degraded this planet in the last 200 years, and particularly since the invention of plastics in my lifetime (I'm 63). My dad was an industrial chemist and involved in the testing and production of the first plastics in Australia. I remember going to the beach in summer and getting fried, there were no sunscreens back then and we just never knew about skin cancer and UV radiation or covering up. Also remember going to the beach and not seeing any plastic rubbish. Now my local beach (Lennox) is covered in microplastic particles and lots of larger bits too. The local freshwater lake is frequently closed over summer due to toxic algal blooms caused by a sunscreen layer sitting on the surface of the water that is so thick you can see it. My sup has a permanent stain from it.
Sunscreen is just another marketing scam, cover up if you have fair skin, avoid sunscreen, its not actually good for us or our environment.
There have been so many marketing scams that have turned out to be absolute bunk, like the margerine vs butter, or hemp vs synthetic fibres, or any of the hundreds, possibly thousands of other marketing scams perpetrated on us by vested big corp interests.
Some points are quite valid in this debate. Especially the bit about it is much better to cover up than wear sunscreen.
But seriously if you are white, enjoy the outdoors and live in Australia, don't be a feckin dick.... apply sunscreen on exposed skin.
This is coming from a guy who like many carries lots of little scars from various spot removals over the years.
At the end of the day, if I kite without sunscreen, I get burnt. That isn't good and hurts.
Buy mineral sunscreen. Zinc Based.
Err, sunscreen was invented mid-thirties! I have photos of me as a baby with zinc on my nose and remember putting on sun cream as a kid and paying the price when I didn't.

I also have fond memorys of you as a kid. You would always roll around unable to stop because of your ball like shape and gravity hu haaah! So much has changed!
Hay steve i met an old hippy at one of the gatherings who was making grass hats. I commented how on the ferrys to the islands they would make grasshoppers home boy made a grasshopper and revealed he use to actually do that for his job. He quit cause he felt responsible for killing the reef and he always said it was cause to much sunscreen. I thought this was a analogy or something as in it was too mang tourists and they were killing the reef by trampleing the coral etc. I didnt realise he literally ment the sunscreen.
To clean your sup just use a magic eraser/sponge

Funny, I was wondering if the author was actually an oncologist...

Not criticizing just pointing out something that is obvious.

Ha! It was a serious issue where we lived, the neighbours had 10, there was a family a few doors away that had 12 and another a few blocks up the road with 8 too!!
But my point was that UV blocking sunscreen was just not available as I grew up, there were oils that helped people "tan" but they did not stop you from burning.

Dr Karl talks about all of this a bit. He mainly says that we mostly get the sun we need during normal activity, but if planning to be out in Sun for extended time, cover up. He also has mentioned several cases of parents being overly cautious to the point their child had vitamin d deficiency. So all in all I feel like Aus Department of health have it right, which is a far dialed back version of what the US implements and this article was largely based on
