Hey kiting world! Just about to get off the twin tip in the waves but not sure whether to go strapped or unstrapped on my surfboard?? Surfed for 10 years so not new to waves or boards but am thinking strapped to begin with to get used to kiting on a surfboard?

Any advice?

Grab a surf board you have laying around and just get out there and give it a go. I like unstraped as i like the freedome to move around the board unrestricted to get the best performance and its easy to gybe with a bit of practice. Most surfboards will still get a solid edge without straps but you will need a decent amount of wax on the board.

If you dont like it after a few goes try and borrow a board with straps and give it a go. It feels a lot different.

I like both, strapped in big surf, unstrapped in smaller surf. Depends how much you like swimming I suppose

Me too although often only the front strap, I find keeping the front strap on helps with lifting the nose over the bigger whitewash and closeout sections yet still enables you to reposition the backfoot depending on if you are about to hit the lip or race the line.

If you wanna surf, unstrapped

If you wanna kitesurf strapped.

Simple.

Same as Johnno here, have my straps real loose when I use them, gives you heaps of freedom but stops you getting thrown off exactly when ya don't want to be.

I have changed my mind, normaly ride without straps but just had a 6 foot f one bamboo board rock up at my door and cant wait to give it a go with straps and without as it has good pads. Man the board has a lot of concave and is super light should be a lot diferent from the 5'10 fish i curently ride. Will let you know how it goes. Really cant wait for the winter swell on the west coast now.

I'm sitting on the fence.
My experience went like this.

1.Started strapless on one of my regular boards and loved the freedom.

2.Bought a strapped board but wasn't that impressed at the loss of freedom, plus I kept stuffing up when gybing/switching getting my feet in and out of the bloody staps (which were too tight and very uncomfortable).

3.Went back to strapless for a while and worked on getting my gybes sussed.

4.Experimented with moving the straps around, then bought some better staps (Dakine Ultimates)that allowed me the adjustment to have them so that they were very loose and comfortable and so started using the strapped board all of the time and hardly notice the straps now.
Bonus is that you can push harder, get air, jump waves on the way out etc.

5.Just recently started using a strapless board again and love the fact that it feels much more like surfing.

Basically for smaller. cleaner waves and when lightly powered - strapless and surf the waves.

Larger, lumpier, closeout, onshore type waves and well powered (like this arvo 30kts) - strapped 'slash and hack'.

IMO if you are from a surfing background just start strapless on any old surfboard, its really not that hard.

Hi Slackster,

Kitesurfing is such a dynamic and exciting sport and is still so young in it's journey. Having ridden most styles in all conditions for many years I can tell you this one thing:

Ride to impress yourself, search for what makes you happy, don't listen to anyone about style, carve your own groove. Impersonating another rider just stifles your own natural style.

Strapped, unstrapped, hooked and unhooked, airs, surf freestyle, twinny style, surfboard, malibu, skim, it really should all be played with. Each style has it's pluses and minuses and can be good or bad depending on the day.

The beauty of our sport is there are no rules, you can mix up any one of these styles in big or small surf, offshore, onshore, cross on, cross off, it is different in every instance and some stuff works in certain situations and some doesn't. You have innumerable combination's and your taste can change from day to day, so get out and find your own thing.

Trying to ride just one style because of fashion is really limiting and corrodes the potential of our sport.

Ride to make yourself smile!

Cheers,

KH

^ To add, when you're challenged and continually pushing new stuff and pulling it off - that's when I've been fully stoked!

Had a few frustrating moments and only been out four times on the surfboard but every session since, even on the twin tip has been like something's awakened again this year. (It's been three years since I stood up on a kite board!)

Also like you I surfed for 10 years, and went straight to unstrapped after the twin tip. Other than getting up the first few times it's pretty easy.

I have surfed for twnety years and been kiting for just a few. latley i excitedly begun kiteboarding on a twintip in flat water. The board was super big so i sold it to a bigger fella and was in the process of shopping for a new one. Becoming disillusioned by how much those boards cost and the massive consumerism involved i paused for a moment.......checked out some footage of guys riding waves with kites and it dawned on me, FUN! that's what i am going to do, on one of the s**t load of boards i allready have kicking around the place- big guns, shortboards, twin fins, mal and mini mal. I am looking forward to giving them ALL a go. Thanks to the info on this forum, i will try unstrapped first and look fitting some straps later. Yooouw!

I know a guy who is a hell man in the waves and he only has a front strap on his board. I wish I was half as good as him

Have tried both, personally prefer strapped ala Jonno Keys. I do however, appreciate good strapless riding though it seems to be pretty rare. Whatever floats your boat. Get into it and ride hard and if your new to the surf, please learn the right of way rules!!!

I would love to be young again and hit the lip etc., but with straps I will hurt myself again...so for me it is unstrapped. However, for the young and restless you can do so much more with straps if you have the freestyle skills. I just can't take the hits any more

Darren, thanks you are da man...........it's about love.

Unstrapped = Progressive enjoyment.

If he (WILSON) has a disease that makes him ride that then I want to get really infected!!!!
Thats what call sick -

FYI Wilson does use straps in some conditions from time to time.

Here's a vid of a recent session we had, there's some strapped and unstrapped riding in it. There's also some hooked in not not hooked in riding.

The point I'm trying to make is, we all came in after and was super stoked with the arvo, we cracked a few beers and no one even mentioned who rode in what style. The next day I rode strapless for 4 hours, wind picked up 5 knots so I grabbed my strapped board instead of changing my kite and enjoyed another 2 hours on the water. I just wish we had some film and battery left because although it was a couple feet smaller, it was equal to one of the best kiting days I'd ever had.

Don't worry what Ben, Felix or any local ripper is doing. Look at the conditions, ask yourself what you feel like on the day in regards to powered flying or park and surfing. At the end of the day just have fun as mentioned so many times already

Cheers Sam

^^^^ That is the best video I have seen posted on Seabreeze this year SammyJ!

And no expensive jetski's in sight.

Except for the first 8 secs there was no other overt or seamless advertising squeezed in.

Clips were of the whole wave surfed/kited without any of the ADD flashy sparkling strobe light disco business.

It was a pure edit of kiting head and a half sets with you and your mates on a great day.

Full marks.

Inspiration: I hope to be kiting waves like that in the not too distant future.

Thanks for those generous kind words Elroy, That's pretty big statement, but I understand where your coming from

lol sorry about that, not intentionally pimping...I did it for a few reasons, Michael our French friend is affiliated in some way with blade kites, so I said I'd make a little clip of the trip for him to send to the blade crew. Licky Force and Wainman were thrown in as Jason distributes them and I personally like to reflect back on my Vid's to help me remember what I was flying at the time. This is the first movie I've put on SB, but there will be more in the future if ppl like yourself enjoy them.

Mate, I'm not a big techo computer head that is why my clips are basic, the only thing I would like to do is maybe 1 or 2 slow mo's of the biggest smack, I don't think Movie makers has the option though.

Glad you liked it, nothing better than overhead days with only a couple mates out.

Cheers

To Slackster, IMO you need straps to start in the surf initially or frustration will set in very quick. But you can always undo the screws of a strap and use the same board once you feel comfortable with trying strapless. Try pick up a cheap secondhand strapped board maybe.
