Nah, I don't think its a stupid post. The stupid thing is when people kite for 50 metres, turn around and kite another 50 metres. As a result one area becomes congested with a whole bay to kite in.
After a day of people watching only their kites and jumping without looking first, I can sympathise with the original poster.
If you don't know what 'short tacking' means, its probably you doing it.

farken oath.
try 30 ppl in an area with a rideable wave that is 100 - 150m long
one short tacking douche fks it for all

Thankyou you you nailed it (I didn't have the energy or gumption to type a detailed explanation yesterday). Those that dont know what short tacking is should google it
It's funny how you muppets constrain yourselves to a 150m area
Then have the wits to complain about congestion![]()
Ever thought about... umm... maybe a different LOCATION?
Hayden there are spots that are better than others.
Particularly if you want cross or cross off winds relative to the wave, and then a wave that peels in the direction of down the line wave riding (ie left handers)
and then wave shape etc. So there will always be better spots that we want to go to.
Pretty basic.
Then, my local has reef at each end that you cant cross, so you are constrained to that area. In some cases one drop-in / screw up but a guy in front of you can mean a good rinsing, and then ending up downwind on the shallow reefs. = Missing skin - or a $300 fin set, or a $1000 mast.
So all we need is politeness and short tacking can be really annoying - particularly if there are enough people out that when you turn onto a wave in the zone (or close to) it is already taken........ that's when it is really fkn rude.
I am glad you have so much room.

Location?
Everywhere. When I was a newbie it always seemed obvious and courteous to me that you dont cut riders of who are setting themselves up. Not that its always newbies who are short tacking, but mostly. As I say anyone who doesn't know what it is (and may not realize they are doing it) should research it. Anyone who is doing it deliberately is just a discourteous prick.
It must happen in waves, or maybe at certain times of the day, we used to get a few short-tackers.
The last coupke of days at my local was glorious, not many peeps out, good winds and no short-tackers.
Maybe I just left before they got there, or perhaps the sharks have scared them off; that could be why they're short-tacking to begin with...![]()
short tacking.. doing a transition in front of a rider coming in on opposite tack. Then travelling in same direction blocking said rider from doing trick, catching wave etc.
bad form
correct etiquette is to pass rider on opposite tack before transitioning.
so simple
What is your guys thoughts on a slightly different aspect to stuffing up a rotation...
okay you have people coming in doing whatever trick and whatsnot, traveling downwind during this process,, turning around leaving upwind space for the next guy.
All good
then there's the intermediate kook trying his best to just to mow the lawn and stay upwind at all costs...does nothing at the end of his tack, turns around and head straight into the path of the guy moving through the rotation.
It's just reminds me of Fcks driving in the right land doing 50 in a 100 zone...
or have I got this all wrong...I see this to be a major problem.
Yeah that sux balls too eppo. While technically not a short tack is effectively doing the same thing. Constantly mowing the grass in the trick sweet spot or transitioning straight back into oncoming traffic is a no no for sure
Oh it's the normal down here....
Cool just wanted confirmation that it sucks major c0ck. Cheers.
Hmmmmm, you've been good of late. However, the phallic references are indeed worrying el capitano

It appears to be mostly old windsurfers who have converted over to kiting who make the best short tackers.
Just sayin.

I guess that would be me. ^^^
lol.
Now let's not get too confused here.
There's short-tacking ...
and there's snaking.
Short-tacking is positively fine if you are not interfering with another's wave ride.
I short-tack all the time ... cause i can.
On the other side, pole-dancers seem to have to sail out to the shipping channel before they can gybe.
lol.

I doubt it. There are some of us old windsurfers that get annoyed with the kiters turning on the spot, changing direction and not looking before they do so. Looking at the kite, going to all the effort of pulling the bar, lifting 30cms into the air and then realising they just cut off someone that was on the same tack moments ago. (edit: Sorry, not even realising that they just cut someone off)
I suspect its beginners to the sport that haven't learned enough to kite without looking at it, and are still overawed with the ability to jump without too much effort. It seems they are not in control enough to be able to look around them before doing anything. I am sure beginner windsurfers are the same, its just that they can't pivot on the spot the way a kiter can.

Yes, he short tacked me in replying, well done young fella, I'll have to lift my game.![]()
Picture this. Your at a point break. There's more riders than decent waves in the set. A decent set rolls in every 5-10 mins (double to triple head). You all end up in a similar rotation heading in and out at the same time. When the set roles in each guy picks a wave in turn and rides it.
If you end up with the wrong timing you miss out and wait for the next set.
There's this one guy who claims his swell rides it for 50-100 meters doesn't like it so he tacks off it... by the time he does that it's wasted for everyone else...... grrrrrr.
PS everyone else claims a wave and rides it. This guy is hunting the biggest waves in the set but by doing so wastes good waves that others could ride.
I don't know what that's called but it pisses me off.

Hmmmmm, more befitting of one with such stature.
How about just park up 50m out the back of the break and wait for the set. Power up just before the best set wave comes. No probs if no one else out. But with a few others its The ultimate in snake moves. ![]()

That's called cherry-picking. ^^^
Cherry-picking is fine if you're the only rider or one of a few in the break.

Usually short tacking and Shore creeping go hand in hand![]()

Anything shorter than the circuit is a short tack although If there's enough room for you to crash and relaunch without interference I wouldn't mind!
