Why is it that surfers give kiters the stink eye when we hoot past having a ball and you're grovelling in 20 knots onshore?
On second thoughts I may have just answered my own question....
Never mind.....

Yeh happens a fair bit. They have the entire morning until lunch or so, then you hit it for 2 or so hours when the waves are completely unrideable for them and they sit there is their own choppy sh1t giving you the stink eye.

What I do is, give them the heads up when a set is coming and call them in on some choppy monsters...tends to settle them down when they know you can actually help em.

But yeh gives me the sh1ts hey.

Funny I was reading a book written on the early days of surfing in Perth, including Margaret river and the clubbies used to confiscate heaps of boards ( due to public perception and pressure) surfers who they thought were a danger. We are kind of in the same era I suppose as the surfers before it became culturally acceptable and indeed seen as an important part of out cultural heritage and identity.

That being said riding through surfers...now that's a big no no.

As you hoot past them having a ball,

you may not be aware of your rail-spray that's pinging them in the sockets.

It's amazing how far the droplets travel over the surface.

Be polite, ride on the leeward side of surfers waiting in the line-up.

Don't forget the beach fisherman !!
Was having a ball in the surf just hanging in the same spot
Surfing waves in boosting on the way out for over an hour
And a fisherman comes and sets up right in front of me , what the
F&$k he has the whole beach to chose from and he sets up in front of me .
Surf was small and breaking close to shore so his line was right in the way .
And to top it off he couldn't speak English but I think he knew I had the sh:t$ .

Hey, if they are out trying to surf when its howling onshore, they must be kooks, so treat em like kooks (including a spray in the face haha)

Dudes are just jelious that they aren't having as much fun.

I don't have a problem at my local. I just haul arse to a different section of beach that's as good if not better...

Well better for me anyway... worse for the paddle in guys.

I usually give them a tow out.

No stink Eye at all.

If its windy and choppy they are usually guys from the city and not locals.

If they come to were you are kiting they are doing the safety in numbers thing and not looking at the conditions.

When I am on my SUP its a different story. They crack the sads. I catch waaay more waves. I get bored and get my Mal out or fish.

Some guys are just sad sacks.

Surfers may give the stink eye, just wink and wave! and always give way to those paddling in. Last time I kited our river mouth as usual the boogers were swarming all over it.. I'm talking 30 or more of them. I was the only kiter. I avoided them for ages but eventually rode one wave right into the pack, turned around and boosted off the back of the next wave. They all hooted me, and called me into a couple after that. Much stoke!

And to think I was meant to post this in the surfing forum, maybe a bit of trolling but I was a couple of beers deep after an amazing session at a secret nsw point break. Ok it was the pass at Byron and the paddlers were extra stinky even though the paddling conditions were epic the whole week prior... I'm glad I made the beer induced mistake though( not my first) cause the replys have strengthened my belief that " the best surfer is the one having the most fun" Pat oconnell, quoting someone else.... Cheers....

I was kiting in my local creek 1 sunday arv, I had this little 30m run and about 10m of down wind where there was no fishos and where the current was strong enough. I was just boosting doing transitions over the dunes. then this knob head reverses his car down right were I was boosting then pulls out a rod in a second then throws his live mullet straight at me then gets anothere 2 rods out and sets them all up. how inconsiderate.

this is all, rant over!

No body owns anything I recon and if your at the spot first its always good to share and be considerate.I have been shouted at for tacking out 40 meters away up wind from surfers before and not kiting waves anywhere near them.On one occasion I could not help my self ,but boost straight over there heads and give the right royal moonshine with a board grab !.
All I heard was stupid ass crow sounding voices !!!.I had a good old laugh afterwards .
The good thing about kiting if surfers are being rude pricks then its easier to just cruise off to other uncrowded areas with out driving you car anywhere.
I have done this on many occasions.

Communication is the key. If you cruise over to surfers slowly and tell them that you'll not take their waves the attitude improves.

The O.P. has the right idea but we have to let them go. Otherwise Kitesurfing will get banned. That kite down kook at Teapoo is a perfect example. Let the surfers have it, we can kite anywhere.

Surfed my whole life bro! But never ever ever in 25 kts nthly onshore slop... That's extunctly why I bought a kite.... I'm assuming the stinky eyes have never kite surfed though... If they did they wouldn't have such bad attitudes eh?
