do you rekon that you shou;d use the hot water method for all wounds. I was fortunate enough to step on a razor fish today, i thought i knocked my heel but afer walking up the beach i saw blood. Anyway it wasnt too bad, only a flesh wound so i stuck so duck tape on and kiteboarded for another 4 hours. OOO YEAH.
Anway now it feels sorta wierd, the water was heeps murky from our floods here. I was more worried about being a homing beacon for sharks at the time though. I used some detol, anything else i should use? feel free to laugh at my misfortunes [;)
One of the spots I kite at all the time (Toogoom) is absolutely teaming with stingrays. Sometimes there's a group of them (anything from 5 to too many to count) and all hell breaks loose when you kite over the top......major action heading out in all directions. We often see them with their fins sticking out above the water.....that looks pretty wierd until you realise what they are.
I've only ever stepped on one once and I was lucky enough to not get spiked.
Update to stingray hole.
After 5 weeks I still have a gaping hole in my leg. The algae in Noosa River proved harder to beat than first thought.
Now the doc had to open the wound right up to scrape the **** out.
Hopefully by Friday I can get stitches and it can start to heal.
Can't wait to get back on the water.

Hey Dave,
bummer dude! Just what part of your anatomy was hit by the little bastard, if not your foot, how did you get nailed??
Heal quick mate,
Kitehard
Back of left thigh half way between knee and hip!!!
I was edging hard in knee deep water. Must have scared the poor bugger.
He slashed my shorts across the arse before impaling my leg. At first I thought I'd hit a stick until the pain started and I looked down!! He was only about the size of a large dinner plate!
Thanks to all the kiters and boaties for assisting me to get to an ambulance and to Chris and Keahi for packing up my gear and keeping it safe for a couple of weeks.
Dang man,
I dont know how the hell stingrays manage to get under us, coz it seems that every second time i go out something slithers out from under me, and glides away. and after reading this thread i was thinking, with ALL the ocean floor out there, how the ****ing hell does this tiny little midgety thing manage to get itself under my foot/me step on it. I mean, WHAT are the chances!!!! its mind bogling. and it seems to happen to heaps of people as well. grrrr
This saga is never ending!!
After 6 long weeks of daily visits to the doc they finally cut my stingray hole open and scraped out the ooze!!
See the pics!!
This first one is after they scraped it out. i had to walk around for a week like this!

Finally they cut it all open and stitched me up! I lost count of how many stitched they used inside.

There is still a little way to go. If I don't develop and abcess again I will be back in the water by New Years day.
MORAL:
If you see a stingray give it a wide berth. This one was the size of a dinner plate and put me out of the water and off work for 8 weeks.
See y'all in the water and have a great summer!
"hey guys, this dudes in agony, lets all piss on him."![]()
don't tell the euro's, they don't need another excuse.
Mmmm, Golden Showers, Mmmmm ![]()
The irony of it all....Talking on this topic....then bam....poor young Steve gets done by one of these....dare I say It....Bastards!
There has only ever been 17 RECORDED deaths by stingray(worldwide), only 2 in Australia!
Tell me that this isn't the most unlucky thing to happen!!!
Anyhow, Keep safe....keep kiteing!
Tone
Well,
when you think about Steve's accident......
Very shallow water, Steve snorkelling just above the bull-ray,
cameraman to the side and close in,......
It's very confronting for the animal.
It's very sad about the death but it doesn't surprise me that the animal responded in the manner it did.
RIP

It's interesting to note that there have been only 3-4 fatalities in the last 60 years from stingrays but all of them have been from a direct hit on the heart.
I guess that all the other jabs have been non-fatal so they don't rate a mention.
I am thinking that if you come swimming along over the top of a stingray from the front and it sees you and freaks then when it flicks its barb then the biggest target is going to be your chest.
RIP Steve Irwin. I hope you died quickly mate. The pain of getting stung in the chest would have been excruciating.
Update on my stingray incident...check out the pic at www.seabreeze.com.au/gallery/gallery.asp?imageid=2291 (original hole)

(scar now)
Besides having an uglier leg than usual, there have been no side effects from this injury except the occasional itch and scream of terror when I see a stingray.
It's interesting that I have received quite a few phone calls from rello's since Steve died apologising for laughing at my original plight!!
Seriously though, Steve was a Caloundra local and well respected in the surfing community. He supported local events and was an enthusiatic guy to surf with. He'll be sorely missed![]()
