As a Noob to sea breeze and also pretty bored with the crappy wind during winter I am not sure if a post like this has gone up before but I thought I would start a post to collect some ideas on the types of fitness workouts you all do in the off season to stay in shape for the impending summer.
I know I am likely to get all kinds of silliness posted but for those who are interested in sharing a couple of good workouts that they feel have helped them with their kiting I would be keen to keep this post going.
Happy to share a strength workout I did on the weekend which I think would certainly benefit my kiting:
Warmup - good 5 - 10 minutes of running and dynamic stretching
20 sets x 2 chin ups - alternate between hands facing forward with wide grip on the bar and hand facing backward with narrow grip on the bar and allow 20 sec rest between sets.
5 sets of 6 overhead squats (bar overhead)
5 sets of 4 front squats (bar on the front of your chest)
5 sets of 2 back squats (bar on your back) Its a lot squats but great for strengthening quads, butts and hamstrings to protect knees.
20 x 5 sets of hanging knees to elbows. Hang onto a chin up bar bring your knees to touch your elbows and slow release back to hanging (allow 30 - 45 sec between sets)
This provided for a general all over body workout and worked the big muscle groups you would use when kiting being legs, back, arms and abs its a solid workout.
Keen to hear what other types of workouts members do to stay fir in the off season.
There is no off season. Get a smaller kite and keep kiting year round.

Squats, deadlifts and chins IMO are actually the best type of strength training to do as contrary to what most people think are all actually core exercises and executed well will ensure the core gets a really solid workout. Overhead squats in particular assist with not only strengthening the shoulder joint but also providing flexibility of the shoulder joint under load....(sound familiar....done properly and not stupidly....). Of course there is nothing better than getting out and kiting as often as possible but right now in Sydney anyway we are lucky to be getting out once every 3 weeks.
I am in my forties and it is proven that risk of injury increases from now on as muscle mass starts to decrease and we start pushing against the tide so to speak. I hear of so many kiters who have knee and shoulder injuries who are in the 40+ age group and I think if you want to prevent injury doing strength training when you hit this age group becomes really important in order to sustain muscle mass particularly doing the type of dynamic movement required when kiting.
Just a thought....seems I might be in the minority but hey I don't surf and really don't have much time or interest in taking it up unless there is a kite involved ![]()
My fitnesss regime on the weekend at 41 is as follows:
2000 burpees,
500 20 kg deadlifts
100 35kg deadlifts
countless military presses, squats, etc.
either swim, surf or skateboard for 2 hours.
14, 9, and 6 arent kite sizes. There the age of 3 girls![]()

I like to believe you about there not being an off season Plummet... I really really would. But I'm afraid here in south NSW, there really does seem to be an off season. I don't give a rats ass about the cold, it's just that there has been about one day above 10knots in the last few weeks that I have had daylight for ![]()
Winter routine:
- bottle of red a day
- 30 to 60 min run a day
- get a flogging on the goat boat whenever I can
It works for me!

every kiters fitness suffers the second the addiction sets in
gone are the days of paddling for hours through crappy drivel just for something to do
now we sail around pretending to look extreme and drink beers in carparks afterwards extolling our self defined awesomeness

Fair play. I guess there are some parts of the world that do have off seasons. My winter hasn't been flash either. But I'm still out there milking as much as I can out of the winter winds.
I also land kite aswell. I can kite in 4 knots of wind if I'm really keen. so with land and water kiting I can kite in 360 deg wind 4-50 knots water, sand, grass and even concrete on the longboard skateboard. So I can milk the wind for most opportunities.
But I do also mountain bike and longboard skateboard. Those sport fill the gap when the wind doesn't provide an option.

gym work outs are so boring...With small kites for the winter fronts or 17m -19 m kites for light wind sunny winters days ..kiting does not stop for me in perth because the winter is here.There is a 22 knot south westerly coming through on wednesday no dought I will be on that leightons to trigg with bells on!!!!!...July and august has the best down winders of the year if your into waves!
find your nearest LessMill BodyPump & Grit classes... mindless training, quick effective and you'll be twice as fit as the previous season!
Saturday Ill be fully lit and geting upside down with altitude on the swan on my 17m and the sun will be shining all day long.Just like summer ,but with a wetsuit!

another classic...I've been married for a while with two kids, I got plenty of rooms like that! If my exercise equipment was that good don't reckon i'd need a room at all. Double pump is all it would take...lol

Even if you have workout equipment like that I can guarantee you wouldn't be able to use it as much as you liked. Even if all you needed for your daily exercise was a double pump.
You would discover the exercise equipment is costly and needs constant maintenance.
You now have less money to buy kites with
After a while you would head to your gym room to discover smaller exercise equipment had been produced and using your main equipment is now off limits.
Your disposable income for kiting gear has now all but evaporated.
Then slowly and surely your equipment becomes run down and worn out even though it still requires extensive maintenance and cost.
Finally your find yourself looking at all new equipment in the gym.... oh it would be good to ride use that equipment harder and harder.
But its socially unacceptable to ride many forms of gym equipment while you have a your trustee unit at home.
So you eventually you find yourself in need of the aforementioned "mastabatorium"................
This all occurs because you have not kited year round and you attempt to stay fit in the off season.
The moral of the story is this
Kite year round and don't buy any in house gym equipment. if you must... hire that equipment when the need arises! Discard it as quickly as you hired it so you can get back to more kiting!

You buy gym equipement to change and be fitter, you don't. The only thing that changes is the gym equipement.
